It was difficult listening to the call. Four pro-VIC commentators giving ACT little chance aft er the VICs got on top. At one stage they were laughing saying teams in the ACT get belted every week by the Swans, so clearly hadn't given ACT the respect of doing a bit of homework before the call. Here's hoping the ACT can reverse the result on Sunday!!:)

Sounds like we should have got the team from QBNFM 96.7 up there to call the games:)

Thanks guys for keeping me up to date; been on the road for the last couple of weeks and no chance to stir the pot..:D
Received test message updates from the so called ASSistant coach - really happy for the entire traveling party to achieve some success on the trip. Should be a great game on Sunday with both teams at full strength..:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Not too sure about the team from QBNFM though ABH :confused: There's one bloke on there that has a really annoying voice... He'd be sure to upset a few on the radio down south just like he does in our region and even moreso on this forum.:D

there home 3 goals clear in time on. says a lot for Canberra footy when the rep side picked from 5 clubs can beat a rep side picked from well over 100 clubs including the best of country VIC in the O and M GV, Bendigo, Geelong and Ballarat. Well done Merv and the boys:thumbsu::thumbsu:

ACT win by 21 points!!

ACT 13-15- 93
Vics 10-12 - 72

Goalkickers : Armstrong, Hughes 3, Bennett, Kavanagh, Illet 2, Jeffrey 1

Rogers, Illet, Kavanagh, G. Underwood, Bennet all very good in great team effort!

Congratulations to Mark Armstrong, Jamie McGinley, all the players, trainers and volunteers who helped achieve this great result and of course D. Wark who has copped some unfair stick by many on this thread.

Well done team!!:thumbsu:

Anyway can anyone tell us why (and i mean a real reason why, not just wark blowing his load over the finals series last year) Armstrong is the Rep coach and his side kick MacGinley is ASSistant? these guys stink this year, and their players lack of intensity probably back up my statement. The only thing it proves is that Warky has no ability to get the best person into positions at AFL Canberra.

That’s why Merv cant coach as a front runner as all he has to contribute is what he has been taught and that is to rip into people to get the best out of them.

unhappyfan

Merv was to busy winning the goal kicking and the hog was on his 5th pie and didnt want to be disturbed.
This is not the only time were there had a stuff up
So how did MERV and his faithful Hog get the ACT JOB!

Havent spoken to anyone since prior to the final, thought I would wait until they celebrated and maybe give the coach a call today.

Underwwod at BP is definately not a first up position for him and as player of the carnival you would think he would walk into his natural spot, but who knows, maybe Merv found a new spot for him during the tournament??

P.S. "Nuffers Not Needed!!":)

ABH,
Would be interested (as I suppose all other posters would be) how the team performed - would be good to get a report from Merv.
I am sure that you and other teams would like to see Griffin sitting in the back pocket.....;)

Here I am, been away all weekend, sorry. Was baking a huge humble pie and feel sick from eating it!

Well done to all involved at the championships - was a great effort. :thumbsu:

Now you can all admit that you have missed me, no one to be angry at for a few days - I hope no one took it out on someone else:)

I had the good fortune to be in Shep for the carnival. My observations were:
:thumbsu:really good standard footy, very hard at the ball, no nasty stuff behind play. ACT were outstanding through the middle of the field through Neely, Bennett, Underwood and Dickerson in the ruck. Ghobraiel was clearly the best defender of the competition, and beat some quality forwards getting some very good delivery.
 Disappointing NSW could not find a player outside the Riverina
:)Armstrong was very good. Both as a player and very calm and constructive as a coach in the talks I heard him deliver.
:thumbsu: The strength of the mature bodies like Kavanagh and Clarke held their own and linked to the running midfield consistently.
:D Finally, the future also looked good with the younger of the ACT players, all being generally sound and often winning their positions and making very good decisions with the ball.
 This was the look on the faces of some of the Vic spectators as the outcome became clear - it was a joy to behold.

Definately not missed due to previous posts being "crap" to say the least.

Some humble pie might tone down some of your argumentative "fishing" and cause you to become a positive, constructive contributor to this forum.

As you have read, since you were missing the thread has run just fine without any mindless dribble...

Thanks for the report OC. Bet the grin was large from ear to ear:D

I have spoken to a few who were also up there and they say it was a long 4-5 days. My guess is that some are getting to old and just cant back up on the drink like they use to!!

Good report OC. I was also down there and the boys running and attack on the footy against some big bodies was outstanding.
Listened to some of the radio stuff and reckon we need ABH and Qbn. FM when the next carnival is held here in two years. Do yourselves a favour and take the time off when it happens as the footy is fantasic over the 3 days.
IMO ACT unlucky not to get more in the All/Aust team. Havent seen the positions but Dicko, A Rogers, J Bennent , Kav were a bit stiff. G Underwood was outstanding.
The Vic had T Danhier, Dean Rice, John Barnes and a cast of 1000s helping them.
Was great to hear the Vic. radio guys squealing about the umpires when the ACT pushed ahead in the second half of the final.
All in all well done.

aniher's idea of 'walkie-talkie': walk and talk and talk

Paul Daffy | July 30, 2008

IN THE lead-up to last weekend's Australian Country Football Championships, Terry Daniher was reluctant to tell his father Jim, once a NSW country representative in both footy and rugby league, that he was coaching the Victorian team.
Victorian officials would be shocked to hear about Terry's reluctance to talk on this matter because, as far as they knew, he talks to anyone and everyone about whatever it is they want to talk about. All those within 50 kilometres of Shepparton during the country championships were bound to have had a word with TD.
Daniher's chat marathon began at the championships' first function at the Goulburn Valley Hotel. As he was walking in the door, a punter announced that TD was his hero at Essendon and bailed him up for five minutes. A few steps later, Daniher was bailed up again. This continued for four days. Whenever the Victorian team was about to go into the rooms to prepare for its next match, an official always had to find the coach. Generally he was 100 metres away, chatting to a supporter. One official suggested they should put a GPS on him.
Daniher's only brush with technology during the championships was a walkie-talkie he used to confer with two of his assistants, former Tigers Nathan Bower and Chris Naish, who sat in the grandstand. In one instance, officials had to rush to his aid because the walkie-talkie had died. His habit of keeping his thumb permanently on the talk button had drained the batteries.
Besides talking, Daniher went for a daily run at dawn. And while the Victorian squad took the team bus to Deakin Reserve for its division-one matches, he walked. His hardiness truly came through in the rain that lashed Shepparton during Sunday's final. While most assistants and officials wore the latest in waterproof jackets, he stood on the boundary with no jacket, just a towel around his shoulders. Occasionally, he used it to wipe his spectacles.
Victoria put up a good fight before losing the final to an ACT team that consisted mainly of former Victorians, including the best player of the carnival, ex-Yarram midfielder Griffin Underwood. In the rooms after the match, Daniher sat down his players and gave a comment on every one of them.
His comment to Adam Hunter, a half-back from Dromana, was that he had struggled in the final. Hunter was later named in the All-Australian team. After finishing his round of the room, Daniher asked whether he had forgotten anyone. North Albury centre half-forward Dan Leslie put up his hand.
The coach apologised. Then he commented on Leslie's lion-hearted performance in the final.
Ninety minutes later, when officials approached him to name his best player of the carnival, he regretted that he had not had a chance to think about it. It had been a busy few days.

Nice story, makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over.
We all know the Vics wont accept that they were beaten, but then they throw in, beaten by a side of mainly ex victorians. I am often wrong and dont mind admitting it, so I will need help with this. I copied the team below and have bolded players I know for certain who are NOT ex Vic.

M. Armstrong, B. Neely, N. Clarke, M. Kimball, L. Jeffrey, J. Bennett, C. Healey, R. Underwood, A. Harris, J. Kavanagh, C. Pettersson, J. Stiller, R. Jaques, C. Illett, A. Leischke, G. Underwood, M. Powell, A. Ainger, S. Curtis, B. Hughes, A. Rogers, R. Quade, S. Dickinson, M. Ghobrial.

Reckon Clarke, Kimball,Bennett,Healy,Harris,Petterson?,Stiller.Powell,Curtis,Rogers and perhaps Ghobrial would not be Vics.as well.Makes about 2/3 of the side and I think that would be the make up of most teams in the carnival.
Suggest you go through the Vics and see where they all come from. Some might be in NSW comps.or others.
Can't really make it State of Origin for training /costs etc. Don't think Underwood would have been picked by the Vics if that was the case.

With regard to the team make up as I understand it:
Ash Harris is an Ainslie Junior
James Bennet is a Belconnen Junior and
Connor Pettersson started in West Canberra Juniors and then played in Sydney before returning to Canberra.

The story is a tragic example of failing to accept defeat, by a better team. It is also representative of the limited numbers of ACT players selected. Some of the following should have rated a mention:
Ben Hughes was a very effective forward and probably should have been included. He took contested marks and kicked long and true.
Scott Dickinson was dominant in the ruck contests and around the ground and similarly should have been in the team.
James Bennet - was very dangerous, used the ball well and worked very hard off the ball with shepherds, blocks and the like.

Well Powell is a Narrandera Junior and was at Lavington when he got drafted and Rogers is he a Sydney boy? Bloody Victorians!!
