I know it is only a phantom draft and it is probably not going to turn out this was, but it is fun to speculate. According to AFL.com this is what we get to Geelong.
Thoughts?

15 - GEELONG - Daniel Stanley
(Geelong Falcons), 18 February 1988, 186.2cm, 89.5kg

With Higgins and Birchall likely to be out of reach for the Cats, Stanley is the most likely option for Geelong at this stage. Although he has been linked with Essendon at No.7, Stanley could slide through to his 'home' town club. Melbourne is right in the mix for Stanley at No.12, should Higgins and Jones not land at the Demons, while he will also figure in Hawthorn's thoughts at No.14. Pfeiffer will also be strongly considered by Geelong, just before Adelaide has the opportunity to select him at either No.16 or No.17, when it has consecutives picks. McKinley is another in the mix. Stanley, a long-kicking defender, has genuine on-field presence and is terrific in one-on-one contests. He also possesses a good leap and is agile. Stanley represented Vic Country this year and was also an AIS/AFL Academy member.

31 - GEELONG - Austin Lucy
(Suncoast Lions), 4 September 1987, 192.3cm, 89.7kg

Key defender hailing from Queensland, Lucy could quite easily slide up the order, as he is one of the few genuine tall backs. Playing for the Suncoast Lions in the AFLQ, he was right under the nose of the Lions, so they are likely to monitor his whereabouts. But he has also attracted plenty of interest from Port Adelaide and could be claimed a pick earlier. If not, expect Geelong to show plenty of interest, while Carlton and Adelaide in the 30s are likely to keep an eye on him. Hailing from a rugby background, Lucy represented Queensland in this year's under-18 title. He had a terrific carnival down back and was named All-Australian at full-back.

35 - GEELONG - Ryan Jackson
(Northern Knights), 4 April 1987, 187.7cm, 80.6kg

Although he missed out on being drafted as a 17-year-old last year, Jackson looks set to be an AFL-listed player in 2006. Geelong, Collingwood, Port Adelaide and St Kilda will all be monitoring him, with the Cats believed to be favoured at this stage. A courageous, midfielder/forward, Jackson captained Northern Knights in 2005, while he also represented Vic Metro. He possesses excellent endurance and this was shown at the Draft Camp when he achieved level 14.5 in the beep test.

47 - GEELONG - Todd Grima
(Northern Bombers), 5 February 1987, 191.6cm, 87.1kg

The full-forward started this year's under 18 championships in a blaze of glory, when he booted 10 goals against the Northern Territory in the opening division two match. By the end of the carnival he was an All-Australian player. Grima also made his debut for the Tassie Devils in the VFL this year. Although his rating in this draft could go up or down, he has attracted the interest of Geelong and Fremantle. He was also very close to be drafted last year.

61 - GEELONG - Robert Eddy
(Gippsland Power), 7 January 1988, 182cm, 78.7kg

Is a realistic chance to be taken late in the draft, Eddy is believed to have come under microscope for Geelong, Melbourne and St Kilda. He is a hard-working midfielder with fine disposal skills. An AIS/AFL Academy and Vic Country representative in 2005, Eddy was a member of Gippsland Power's premiership side in September. His endurance is also a feature of his game and this was shown when he achieved level 14.9 in the beep test at the Draft Camp.

All good but I think it would be a bit safer to get a ruckman at 61 to develop.
I still like the look of Ashley Eames.
At 26 he is already developed. No waiting 4 years for a solid ruckmen.

Hearing a bit about this Eames bloke, what's his story? I like the sound of picking up an older ruckman, someone at his age is ready to go and should be in good nick if he hasn't been playing at the top level.

Nothing against Stanley , I cant say I've seen him so who knows what hes really worth but he is described as a long kicking defender that has genuine on-field presence and is terrific in one-on-one contests. Sounds fine but to me this is pretty early to be pick a guy like this.Think about where we picked Ling and Chapman in 99. If Mckinley is there Id hope we grab him , we a more deficent in his area than Stanley's.Hurn or Varcoe would have tempted as well.
Lucy at 31? Before Egan maybe but now?
Also to pick up another 182cm player at 61 when Trent West was there would be questionable I'd have thought

It all depends Turbocat. All the draft sites and discussion tell us is what type of player a draftee is. The expertise comes in when a recruiter judges how much potential that player has to excel as that type of player. If Stanley has the potential to be the best small defender in the comp then he is a bargain at 15 in my eyes. Sure small nuggety tough defenders are not high on clubs shopping lists but it depends how good he can be. Drum is in a similar position. He is described as a Half Back in the Ben Hart mould. This type is not high on the shopping list but if he could be as good as Ben Hart he would be a bargain in the top 10. McKinley may have desirable characteristics and be the type of player we need but if the recruiting staff don't believe he can be as good a medium forward as Stanley could be a defender then they should go with Stanley.

All the draft discussion seems to focus on is draftee x has the attributes we need so therefore we should draft him. In reality it is much more complicated and every year us amateurs seem to cast aside the realities in regard to success rate. This is why quality has to be the only factor worth considering with our picks. If Stanley could be the best at what he does but is overlooked by others because he in unfashionable then that will be a bonus for the side that does get him..

On another note Grant Birchall from Tassie has the attributes that Stephen Wells just loves. 192cm, flexible, can play midfield , back or forward. Think Leigh Colbert, Darren Milburn, Joel Corey, Corey Enright, Andrew Mackie. We just love this type. But does Wells thinkl he will be any good and will he be there at pick 15? I guess we will find out Saturday

Pick 15 D. Stanley- Good player. Will be lucky to have him but we are in desperite need of another quality midfielder IMO. Those two South Aussie's can't be overlooked. You HAVE to take Hurn or Pfeiffer over Stanley. Higgins would also be sensational

Pick 31 Lucy Very happy. Looks rock solid. He can grow into a geniune key defender under Scarlo and Harley. Still not sure about Egan's class and I have doubts over Spencer's agility at AFL level. Excellent pick IMO

Pick 35 Jackson. Another good Pick. Midfielder winger. Bit outside but reminds me a bit of Dyson from the bombers. Don't think he will be a gun but he's got pace and finds the footy and has the right build. Complements our current defensive minded midfielders.

Pick 47 Grima. Big fan of this pick. Leads well is agile and has good hands. Everyone doubts him coz he's not a Vic or Crow. Key forward who kicks bags. Hopefully we get him and that our Tassie curse doesn't strike him down.

Pick 61. Eddy. Good player. Would be happy with him. Maybe if one of the West's. Micheal or Trent are left we could snare them. We could do with a back up ruckman. I actually think we will pass on this selection and see what comes up in the pre-season draft.

Toughts

PS Rowan Bronson for a rookie spot

Good arguments ther SF.Stanley and Birchell would continue the house that stephen built although I have to say how good any player ends up being far more than just what he presents as a jr player at draft time. Its what you do when you get the kid to your club, take Tweek for instance, gone from being over looked by everyone to worth a R1 pick in two years. So,Im not sure one can rule out Mckinley developing into the best meduim forwrd or Varcoe into the best pacy mid.If as has been mentioned we have shown interest in BMK id like us to take the risk and go for him.Take a player thats maybe outside of the perfect Welles mould. Another player in the mould of a Dog Johnson would be handy
In the end I'll back our staffs judgement, they have a few credits in their bank, they have very few blues since 99.
