Try this to get a more even game.
I have done this with every AFL game, and it creates the most realistic scores.
1. Sim the first quarter (in "select side", put the controller in the middle, not to the left or the right).
2. Play as one team in the second quarter.
3. Play as the other team in the third quarter.
4. Sim the last quarter.
This often throws up some very interesting scores and results, as simming the first and last quarters make it harder for you to thrash a team (since you are not playing four quarters with one team).
I find playing it like this is much more fun, as the mistakes you make and the outmarking the AI makes turn around when you play as the other team, so both teams get similar advantages or disadvantages, and it is based more on a tussle between you and the AI than the glitches in the game benefiting one side.
You can also play all the quarters, and play two quarters as one side, and two as the other.
