“St Kilda has emerged as a late contender for Irishman Conor McKenna,” Cleary told Seven News.

“The speedster wants to return to the AFL, he has other interest from Brisbane, Port Adelaide and former club Essendon, Geelong though, are now seen as outsiders.”

So you’re telling me there is a chance?

Given we're so tight for list spots that even a still-contracted Tippungwuti wanting to return would struggle to find a home, I'm not sure McKenna is a realistic chance at all.

Did also cross my mind after I said it.

That said if we somehow end up with a spot and he wants in I’d snap him up in a heartbeat.

what are the rookie category rules like here given the irish background. Would the AFL ignore that he was an AFL player 3-4 years ago?

Not sure if asked before, Can we draft Jayden and put him on LTI and pop McKenna on the list ?

Only if Jayden is out for the year. Which he won't be, should play VFL in the first month.

If Munkara slips through the ND we won't need to anyway

As eth-dog said; we can do it but wouldn't be worthwhile since he should be rehabbed pretty much for the start of the season.

Most clubs find an LTI before mid-year for the MSD as well, and given our success via that avenue I suspect the club will want to have that option available without having to worry about finding an LTI to be able to play Jayden in the VFL.

Looking forward to next year;

19 out of contracts next year. We're up for a bit more turnover and upheaval.

Fringe
-Menzie
-Voss
-Lord
-Baldwin
-Weideman
-Setterfield
Potential retirees
-Heppell
-Tippa (hoping not)
-Phillips
-Stewart (might go a year early if he doesn't play due to injury)
Free agents
-Redman
-Parish
-Heppell
-Tippa
Potential trade targets (outward)
-D'Ambrosio
-Bryan
-Zerk

Assume we do everything we can to re-sign Hobbs, Jones, Wright, Draper, and Redman.
Bryan could be viewed as someone we "cash in" on if the interest and right deal is there.
Parish looms as the interesting one. Reckon we'll want him to stay, but could be one that's beneficial to let go if it means another top pick in the rebuild.

Also, all our rucks out of contract int he same year. lol. Would be pure Essington if all 3 (and Wright) opted against being at the club next year.

LIST MOVEMENT UPDATE

10 x OUTS

5 - Smith
10 - Francis
12 - Cutler
18 - Hurley
32 - Eyre
(asked to trial for SSP)
33 - Ham
36 - McDonagh
38 - Brand
45 - Waterman
(was Cat.A Rookie)
49 - Hird (was Cat. B Rookie)

10 x INS

Setterfield
Weideman
McDonald-Tipungwuti
(was on long-term injury list [LTIL])
Menzie (having a LTIL spot previously and now rookie contracted)
D’Ambrosio (having a LTIL spot previously and now rookie contracted)
Pick 4 (reality pick 5 likely to be Tsatsis or Phillipou IMO)
A. Davey
J. Davey
(could free up a list spot IF placed on LTIL for 2023)
Spot for Munkara (NGA, Cat. B rookie) or another draft/DFA/SSP player (if Munkara taken in Top 40)
Spot for either Pick 22 (IF not used for A. Davey prior) or McKenna/Stocker or DFA/SSP player

Draft picks:
4, 22, 54, 62, 68, 72

Summary:
We will use pick 4 (reality pick 5)
Pick 22 will depend on when A.Davey is bid on. Options are
a) exchange for lower picks to provide enough points for A.Davey if bid on prior to Pick 22
b) Use Pick 22 for a quality player
c) Swap Pick 22 for an F2 pick

If a) or c) transpire, then it potentially opens up a spot for McKenna or a DFA like a Stack/Wallis/Stocker. Stocker would be my preference as per link.

A further wild card is that Jayden Davey is coming back from multiple knee surgeries and may be considered for the long-term injury list, potentially freeing up a spot on the list for SSP.

Current Best 23 IMO (subject to change post pre-season & injury)

Notes to Best 23.

Setterfield, Weidemann & Tippa straight into Best 23 but ALL need a strong pre-season to cement their spots.
Cox lucky to be included (reason: versatility) but needs a strong pre-season.
Langford unlucky to miss but failed to take that next step in 2022 & make any position his.
Snelling unlucky but Tippa takes his place one would think.
Heppell required on field for his leadership BUT needs to perform well to remain included.
Hind included but should McKenna come back then the spot is his.
Stewart more mature, harder and a better decision maker than BZT IMO, albeit BZT has a higher ceiling with his age and is showing signs. Reid probably the future heir at FB in any case. All 3 can stake their claim for next year & much will depend on their respective pre-season improvement.

Hird doesn’t count as one of the 10 outs, as he doesn’t open a rookie or main list spot. But I think you can’t include tippa as an ‘in’ unless you also have him as an ‘out’. So the maths still ads up

Jayden will not be LTI . His injury was early this year .

I dunno. I reckon judgment should be reserved on a lot of those players who at the end of last year had a lot to prove; Setterfield, Weid, Walla, Snelling.
On AFL form, Duz should still be a walk-up start until he's out done.
