The grassroots level will develop rapidly coinciding with the huge exposure women's footy is getting. I don't think you should underestimate how many girls will sign up as a result of this competition.
Is that what's best for footy though? I see local clubs in my state folding or battling to field a competitive side now. It's getting more expensive all the time to survive, throwing in another league that will not help. Money from te AFL will though.

Clubs at local grass roots level are struggling financially due to increase costs bestowed upon them by the AFL, as much as any reason. The AFL are financially ripping the absolute guts out of grass roots footy and making big $$$'s.

Feminism

noun
1.
the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men
.

I don't know anyone who disagrees with this.

I'll say it again feminism has nothing to do with equality.. And you can quote dictionary entries to me all day... That's my opinion

I think the fear that the standard set in last years exhibition games would be diluted with spread of talent 8 ways was a genuine one.

I watched a fair amount of the games , all teams are generally good at applying pressure and all are equally bad at trying to find a way through.

Undoubtedly the game will evolve as more talent is infused into the ranks. The point made earlier re the low scores is a good one , the promised open brand of footy has been anything but to this point, reflected in the piss poor scores

I might be alone but I look forward to the day we have a team in afl W

Geelong, St Kilda and Hawthorn are all fielding affiliate sides in the VFL Women's competition this year.
What the hell is Richmond doing?
If the answer is nothing, then the club should shove its gender equity project up its arse.

But...it does, feminism is about equal rights, what is your take?
My take is this is not the case but if you would like a couple of examples
Feminists want men's clubs shut down or forced to accept female members ,however these same feminists demand women's only gyms I.e fernwood so they can have a space that is male free. In fact I agree with them on this however many males would like exactly the same thing.
There was a male only barber shop that was featured on the news recently that has been torn apart on social media by feminists yet the same outrage isn't applied to female only day spas
Women are paid the same prize money at the Australian open tennis, yet only play 3 sets instead of 5 therefore working less for the same amount.
This isn't equality.... I'm all for equality.. Non of the above examples are equal
Oh and for the record I have never worked in a job were I have gotten more pay than a woman.. That particular inequality ( and this is inequality) seems to exist in white collar jobs I.e lawyers, accountants etc
However back to my point vocal feminists like Clementine Ford don't preach equality they preach two sets of rules... Please read up on this and over a period of time if you are fair minded you will see complaints leveled against men well Ihe women are not held to the same standard.... How many times have you read an article by women saying men don't know what it's like to be a woman and should shut up about telling us how to think and act then within a week the same journo, blogger will write an article pontificating on how men should act and think... If you don't see the hypocrisy in this well then I guess you never will...
Anyway I doubt you will see/agree with my points, as is your right, just as its mine to hold this view.... But you did ask my reasoning ..heres a small part of it

I'm interested enough. But a tigers team would make me a fan - of the tigresses. There is something in my genes that make sit very very very hard to support a team wearing Collingwood or Carlton jumpers.

This is too early for there to be enough quality players. In some ways that is great. It will speed the improvement of talent up a lot. It might also increase the female AFL players right around Australia. Another way to make the indigenous game more national. NRL can't really do it - too much focus on tackling.

Anyway, I reckon in a decade or so we'll all look at the women's comp and reckon they do alright. That is the timeline. 10-20 years. Same as the expansion teams.

NRL already have a womens league

To a footy fanatic like myself, being able to sit down on a Friday and/or Saturday night and see a game of AFL in February, I think it's fantastic! Sure the skills don't compare but I think that will come as more girls join and their is more competition for spots in sides.

While it doesn't diminish my desperation to see the Tigers take the field in March, any AFL distraction at this stage is a welcome one :thumbsu:

I like how it's unpredictable, but the skills were a bit less than I thought.

It'll take off, because the AFL will pump so much money into it, that people will be forced to watch it (GWS / GC).

I'd probably watch on TV a Richmond side, but I'd rather watch the soccer on a Friday night.

I think they erred by aligning the clubs to AFL clubs.
I would like to see something of what they did for the BBL.
Two teams in Melbourne, one in WA, one in SA, one in NSW, one in Queensland and one in a developing market like, say Canberra or Hobart.
Six teams, talent pool isn't as stretched.
The two Melbourne teams could be similar to what the Renegades and the Stars are - one representing the west and the other the CBD and the east.

I don't want to turn this thread into another topic so I'll just finish with saying you pointed out a lot of extreme versions of the word which happens in all facets of titles or beliefs. With women having so many rights in this day and age the word seems outdated from a time when they just wanted to vote, work, and just to be treated equally. Unfortunately it's become a modern buzzword that has been adopted by some extremists (see Clem Ford, just a loudmouth attention seeker) when the majority of people who believe in the title have much more common sense.

are they directly fielding a side or lending their name as an affiliation of some sort?

good idea, hadn't thought of that,,,perhaps the pioneers should have been city oriented and could have evolved toward teams. Im genuinely disappointed the standard was nothing like I saw in the exhibition game. I support the concept and want for it to grow and succeed ,,, at this point it is painful. lots of dribble handballs to teamates red hot. do love the girls passion and happy for them to have their time in the sun, well deserved that womens sport finally gets some real attention , this is only the beginning

I can accept that

Preparing for the next round of team inclusions
