The AFL today contacted Clubs regarding compensation as a result of player movement following the AFLW Priority Signing Period in March 2023.​

The following compensatory picks have been awarded:​

​

• The Adelaide Crows will receive a Band Four Compensation pick for the loss of Ashleigh Saint.
• The Brisbane Lions will receive a Band One Compensation pick for the loss of Emily Bates and a Band Three Compensation pick for the loss of Greta Bodey.
• Carlton will receive a Band Two Compensation pick for the loss of Lucy McEvoy
• Collingwood will receive a Band One Compensation pick for the loss of Chloe Molloy
• Fremantle will receive a Band Five Compensation pick for the loss of Janelle Cuthbertson.
• North Melbourne will receive a Band Five Compensation pick for the loss of Brooke Brown.

Band One Compensation: A pick in the middle of the first round of the AFLW Draft immediately after the natural selection of the team that finishing ninth.​

Band Two Compensation: A pick at the end of the first round of the AFLW Draft, immediately after the natural selection of the team that finishes first.​

Band Three Compensation: A pick falling in the middle of the second round of the AFLW Draft, immediately after the natural selection of the team that finishing ninth.​

Band Four Compensation: A pick falling at the end of the second round of the AFLW Draft, immediately after the natural selection of the team that finishes first.​

Band Five Compensation: A compensatory selection falling in the middle of the third round of the AFLW Draft, immediately after the natural selection of the team that finishes ninth.​

If there are multiple compensatory picks in the same band, they will be provided in reverse ladder order following the completion of the 2023 NAB AFLW Competition.​

Ticky009, I'm pretty good at counting. It looks like AFLW Round 10 will fall 2 weeks before the AFL Draft. Then we have a week left of November which should contain the AFLW Grand Final.

Is this draft definitely going to be in November, in the middle of finals do you think? And are we going to cop yet another player movement period this year?

They wanted it all completed before December 25 so everyone can have a stress free Christmas/New Year break.

I understand that is what was stated, but practically it is going to be a whirlwind and rushed process so may increase stress before the break.

Potentially more players will be committing to play on in 2024 then retiring by March when they realise their passion has gone, priorities have changed or their body won’t cope.

Dogs have pick 1, but a lot of the top kids are club-tied. I wonder if we're going to scout for Vic players at other teams who feel like coming home, and trading the pick rather than using it.

The 4 expansion clubs got the chance to sign 3 NGA players over 2 drafts, which became 3 when the AFL introduced the 2023 supplementary draft. Last week Port signed up 3 of Rookie Me Central's top 10 rated 2023 draftees.

Hopefully we draft a 4th, Piper Window given she nominated for the SA draft last week.

A LITTLE-KNOWN expansion club player signing rule is set to shake up the next AFLW Draft, which will be held in December.

There's a chance some of the very top talent – including Lauren Young, Shineah Goody, Laura Stone and Alyssia Pisano – could skip the draft entirely, eligible for pre-signing by expansion clubs.

The four most recent AFLW teams – Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney – were given the option of pre-signing three players from their women's Academies prior to the draft, over a two-year period.

The wording has since been slightly tweaked to three drafts, to accommodate the supplementary draft earlier in the year that was for mature-age players only.

That national list is very encouraging. GWS will have a lot more good options than in some previous drafts. Most of the top end of the draft will end up being a lot more intriguing than if everybody just nominated home state.

The hope is that next year it may well be a full national, with pay increasing to $67k for the 2025 AFLW season, plus players get initial relocation costs covered.

It also helps out in fair market value too. For example as it stands in Queensland who have a number of top prospects, other teams can bid on players, and they can match, but if they nominate for Queensland, then only the other Queensland team can bid (and usually they've got an unspoken agreement to take their respective players). Evie Long nominating nationally is a huge coup for the comp, would have been great to see more, but it's a good first step.

Is there bidding and matching in the AFLW draft? I didn’t think there were any zones per se (apart from the concessions for the most recent expansion sides). Just the (optional) state-based nomination system.
