AGM Date

Well it's been set, and predictably it's been set early enough to foil the DeLutis ticket, which had been taking time it didn't have to cross Ts and dot Is. As a result DeLutis has pulled the plug on a challenge. Just for now, I'd say.

Nominations close Jan 8, and the AGM itself is on Feb 8. Make sure you're registered to vote. I find it hard to believe that the DeLutis ticket couldn't get their nominations in by Jan 8, so I wonder how organised it was in the first place.

I expect we'll be having an EGM part-way through the season when DeLutis does finally organise his team.

This is the question that everyone should be asking about not only this ticket, but other rumoured tickets. It is almost 4 months since the Pagan/Mitchell debacle, which first raised question marks over Smorgon's leadership. Since then we have heard whispers of many potential challengers for the presidency & the board, yet none have come to fruition.

The question I would ask of De Lutis & his supporters is, how could you have expected the rest of the Carlton supporters to get behind a person who either couldn't get organised in 4 months or was not really sure they wanted to make a run for the presidency? Is this the type of person we want running our club? Someone who can't put a ticket together in 4 months?

Smorgon may or may not be the right leader for our club, but if nothing else, he seems to have the street smarts to outmanoeuvre those that would seek to dethrone him.

Or those advising him.

I agree with the rest of your post but I'd go further back than 3 months ago. It's been clear for some time the club is in a precarious position and I would have thought Collo standing down was a the time for anyone with aspirations to be putting their plans in place.

The names we keep hearing of the people behind these supposed bids are simply more of the same. It seems they spend more time trying to get people to run as their proxies than they do trying to formulate a plan.

Very disappointing news :thumbsd:

BT and THS, this big name you have been hinting at.... are they going to put their hand up or what?

That is exactly right, JD & even though Smorgon is probably not the long term answer for the club, until a viable alternative actually puts his own hand up, instead of someone else's hand, those that do not like Smorgon are going to be stuck with him.

In the meantime I just hope that those who have been leaking information from the board & those who have been ringing around trying to convince someone to put their hand up, will go to ground until something concrete is worked out. I bleed everytime I see a report in the media about in-fighting, potential challengers etc. It does nothing for the marketability of the club & it just gives supporters of other clubs a free kick to totally sink the boots in. Some of it has been deserved but some of it is just same rubbish, different day.

So...let me get this straight. DeLutis & Co, these wonderful businessmen with the knowledge & the cash - still cannot get their heads together for as long as it takes before January 8th & nominate? That, to me, is amazing. Have to question their passion if that's the case. If you were absolutely fair dinkum about it, wouldn't you do what it takes to have your nomination ready??

I'm hoping like hell that these guys will prove me & the media wrong & do something, because they will probably have my vote.

I hope they don't use the festive season as an excuse. Surely they all have mobile phones, faxes, laptops, etc!!!

My thoughts exactly. It makes me wonder, do they really have what it takes to resurrect our club if they can't get their act together now?

As much as we supporters would like it to be fixed asap, i think the Delutis campaign are not rushing into it. They want to do it on their terms, not have SMorgan run the show.

I'd love this mess to be cleaned up over night. But it won't be. I dont think it means goodbye to Delutis and Co, i think perhaps they are just making sure they do it properly, and go into with everything as proper as they can do.

I dont think it's a bad thing. I dont think its a matter of them not getting their act together - these are extremely competent business men who know what they are doing. I'm sure the passion is there. I'm as impatient as anyone :) However, i've thought a bit more about it, and i'm still holding out faith in the Delutis ticket, when it's time comes!

Its a sleeping giant... beware :)

Let's never forget that De Lutis was vice president while John Elliott as president was overseeing the actions that led to our subsequent punishment by the AFL & the failure to rebuild our playing list due to the refusal to rebuild. In fact De Lutis was the man that Elliott decreed should be his successor. This man was in a position to try & prevent much of what went down, but stood back & watched it happen. If he is to be our 'white knight' we are in even bigger strife than what we currently are.

Let's not turn the clock back to the late '90s & early '00s. It is because of that period that we as a club are where we are now. If there is to be a changing of the guard it needs to be someone new, with fresh ideas. De Lutis is out, as is Tom Elliott. Keep searching there has to be better options out there.

Medium sizered, what you just said supports a very important fact. :) I am a supporter and really know nothing about what goes on at board level. I only know what rumours and teh media allow me to know.

I dont know what is true or not.

For that reason solely, I am putting my faith in teh playing group, and couldn't care who is in charge of the board. Because whoever it is, i'm sure there will be plus and negatives.

I want my football back :)

What i'm trying to say, is that I can only trust who is in charge, that they will do the best for the club. I dont know if they will or not, i just have to put my trust in them.

I agree wholeheartedly with these sentiments. The problem is that at a time when we are putting together a talented list of youngsters who should take us to better times, the media & those who are feeding them (including some posters on here) continue to want to take the focus away from the development of Simpson, Walker, Waite, Fisher, Murphy, Kennedy, Gibbs etc to suit their own agendas. Every time we hear something positive about the players, in the media or on here, you can just about guarantee it will be followed up with rumour/speculation about infighting, board challenges & the like.

It is as if there are those out there who don't want to hear about the positives but instead thrive on the negatives & there are certain members of the media who are more than happy to fulfill the needs of these people. Ultimately none of this will change until either we start winning games or Smorgon, Malouf & Pagan are forced to fall on their swords, whichever happens first.

I would really like to hear what BT and THS have to say on this matter now.
Very very disappointed to hear this news, especially after we had been "promised" so much. I guess our club will just continue to stagnate for another 12 months whilst other clubs grow and prosper. :(

If we can prosper on the field, growth will follow.
We have the cattle, it will be the coaching staff not the board that will mould them. Our greatest fast-track to off field will be onfield. I think our list looks awesome.

colin delutis will be president but at the moment does not want to be president with the current organisation, he wants to get 100% commited team and backing and he allready has support from pratt.

There is alot of stuff going on behind the scenes.

Why would you want to be president of carlton at the moment, you just get knifed in the back left right and centre.
The place is a mess...

While it's nice to have shortcuts presented on a silver platter, you don't do yourself favours by relying on them. We have to get on with building our success the hard way, gradually. That means memberships and premiership points. If those two happen, the rest will follow.

If the boat comes in later, well and good.

I thought they would want to be president because they are worried about the future of the club. If they think they can make another run next year instead, the club might not be as precarious as we think.

Too much political posturing going on. I'm having a terrible time right now outside of BF, happy to pretend this crap isn't even happening for a while. Bring on the footy, I need something uplifting.

Amen to that!

From what we are told there are some powerful Carlton supporters who are not happy with the club's current direction. You would want to be president of the Carlton Football Club at this moment because you want to make sure the club is heading in the right direction. So far, though, no one has definitely committed to challenging the current board. If the only reason that someone hasn't put their hand up is because they fear being knifed in the back, then they don't have the stomach to run an AFL club.

At the moment only one man seems to have the 'stomach' to run our club & that is Graham Smorgon. So many high profile names have been mentioned as replacements for Smorgon eg Grollo, Fahour, Brown, Harold Mitchell, De Lutis. Not one of these people have committed to run for the presidency. If they are waiting to see how things are going to turn out in 2007 before announcing their candidacy, I would suggest they are putting their own interests ahead of the club.

We wait with baited breath the next chapter in the on again/off again board challenge.

I really have a hard time believing that Smorgon has the best interest of the club. He is there for his own agenda IMO and the quicker we can get him out, the better.
Anyone without an agenda doesn't belong on a board or in politics. That's why they run for these things, because they think their agenda is better than the other guy's.

Somehow I doubt he's doing it for the money or hot director-on-director action. It's not a paid job - in fact quite the opposite. Whatever people's opinions about any past, current or prospective Carlton director, I believe they all wish the best for the club. Even if you think they're incompetent, you have to give them that much.

How much easier would Smorgon's life be if he wasn't president? He could be sunning himself on a private island rather than descending into the bowels of supporter angst in an online chat. For someone to take the abuse he (and let's face it, anyone else who gets the job) cops and then come back for more, they have to passionately believe in the club, and their part in fixing it.

That goes for any director, not just Smorgon.

Let's give Tom Elliott his due - he has put his hand up.

According to media reports Tom Elliott is considering running for the board/presidency. It would appear he hasn't yet committed to do so. Given that the date for the AGM has been brought forward a month, it is hard to see him being able to put a ticket together in time. His only option would appear to be running as an individual. If this was to happen, I fear the white-anting of the club would move into overdrive.

That is true AD, but he should put the clubs interests before his own. FFS, he moved the AGM so another ticket wouldn't have the required time to challenge the board.

Have a look at Collingwood and Essendon. Two Melbourne clubs who comtinue to make $1M+ profits, have a very settled board and are very very quiet in the off-season, and then have a look at us. We are a complete basket case, and the buck stops with Smorgon.

He is running our great club into the ground, and the quicker he is gone the better.
