Aker seeks comeback with GWS.

Apparently Aker wants to make a comeback with GWS. He has been courting Gubby Allen recently. The response has apparently been lukewarm from GWS.

In classic Aker style, he states that no body knows of James McDonald! Furthermore he would put bums on seats.

Would love to see it happen, but don't think it will Aker. Besides Big Bad Barry would run through you!

Akermanis (and Fevola) are just the worst people possible for this "Mentoring" role. Guys like Corners, Brogan, McDonald, Power (and Hall to a degree) are what you want for that role. Nice guys who can set up a positive culture and be a great leader to the rookies and show them what to do.

Akermanis is far from a leader (A smart arse ******** that no-one likes, is most certainly not a leader).

I know GWS won't want to make the same mistakes as the GC and have very few mature players, but honestly if all of McDonald/Power/Hall/Akermanis/Brogan/Cornes/Folau get consistent games then I see that as very problematic. Mature-age players to protect the young-uns, good move. Turning the side into a retirement home, bad move.

I have no doubt McDonald is probably a much better bloke than Aker, and undeniably a better leader, but compared to Aker he really is a nobody, especially in RL dominated territory.

JM isn't going to GWS because he's a big name, he's going there because he's going to be a positive influence on their list and help people to develop. Akermanis is a w***er, GWS whilst needing big names don't need w***ers.

I'm no fan of Chad Cornes, he's carried on like a pork chop more often than he needed to, but this year on the way out when he could have commanded a game he's held himself fairly well. Akermanis in the same situation would have flipped out.

And in typical Akermanis style, knowing he's no chance he's attempted to marginalise those that have gotten a spot ahead of him. Sure, if you go through the main board threads involving Akermanis you'll notice I'm always sinking the boots in, but this situation demonstrates why I do it.

The guy is losing relevance faster than even a cynic towards him like myself could have imagined. This is a cry for help, nothing else.

I guess it might be valid, to a point. But, with Sheedy's mouth and the potential to get Hall there adding Aker would just push it one step closer to being a circus. You have to remember that when Aker was finishing up mid-year at the Bulldogs he was playing like shit. Nothing more, nothing less.

His body wasn't able to stand up to it in his final year with us, almost two years down the track he's pretty much no chance considering the game's propensity to move on in terms of physical requirements.

MacDonald might not have a profile, but he's a solid character. He's never going to be remembered as the player that Aker was, but this is a situation in which he has him trumped.

With bums on seats that is what Folou is for. His name and ability to get people interested in Sydney is far larger than Akermanis could ever command. So his comment about bums on seat is way off the mark.

Why GWS is going after Barry Hall is that apart from his occassional snaps on the field, this bloke was a very good leader and role model for youngsters (plus could make people around him walk taller). His name in the Sydney market is also way bigger than Akers is there.
