Pie 4 Life
Hall of Famer
Alex Fasolo
Alex Fasolo was taken at #45 in the 2011 National Draft. Many Pies fans were hoping Derek Hine could grab a diamond in the rough, and if the thirteen games from 2011 are anything to go by, he could be that diamond.
When he was drafted, ‘Fas’ wasn’t short of confidence in saying he wanted to play in season 2011. Very few would have believed that just under a year later he would be running out on the MCG to play in the 2011 Grand Final. While he wasn’t going to be the Jarryd Blair of 2011, he was going to prove his credentials and what Pies fans can look forward to in the coming years.
Statistically he didn’t pick up more than 19 disposals, but for Fasolo, it is more wise to look at his goal average from those possessions, because against Essendon in Round 19, he booted five goals from five kicks, but arguably the moment he’ll be remembered for came in the Qualifying Final. With a few minutes to go, Mick Malthouse decided the time was right to unleash the ultra-keen Fasolo onto the MCG. Three minutes later, when the siren had gone, Fasolo lined up and ultimately kicked a great goal, after assisting Luke Ball moments earlier. What made the goal more remarkable was his ability to have a laugh with a teammate as he kicked it, but somehow still nailed it from beyond fifty.
In 2012, Alex Fasolo will continue to play a half forward role, but I expect he will get stints in the midfield. He has a lot of Didak about him and if he can become anything like ‘Dids’ then we have a seriously good player on our hands. Much like Steele Sidebottom, his grin and personality have made him a cult hero and he will be looking to step it up a notch in 2012.
