Re: Missed on Warnock

In all seriousness, we need a full forward more than we need a ruckman. Our forward line which is due to lose Robbo within the next year looks like a shambles, so Watts it is.

Speaking of freaks that Essendon have tried to pick up in the past, what ever happened to that bloke from Rwanda or Ethiopia who was 8 feet tall and Sheeds wanted to play him all over the ground....Did he even get into the country?

Re: Missed on Warnock

How about after the draft we send Barry Prendagast and a few guys on an african safari with a bag of footballs. Get them to find a couple of 6'5 16y.o. and sign them up as international rookies.

Re: Missed on Warnock

We're nearing post-season, where rumours fly, and garbage is prevalent.

What a wonderful time of year this is.

Chiliboy can't be too far away - he's a trade week specialist as well.:D

Re: Missed on Warnock

I'd say Plan B is 1 of 3 possible options

- Most obvious option is to take Naitanui with our first pick
- Take a ruckman with pick 17 or 19
- Hope, pray, sacrifice a few virgins so that one of Meesen or Spencer turn into our number ruckman for the next 6-8 years.

i don't really want us to take Naitanui as we have 2 decent ruckman and i think a forward is more important and we currently have less suitable options.

A ruckman at 17/19 is our best option. There are some pretty highly rated ruckman available in this draft, Naitanui and Vickery will both be gone, if we're lucky Trengove will be available, Roughead is unlikely to have been drafted by this stage and also gives us a Ruckman/forward.

Meesen is not really an option, so it would be putting an enormous amount of faith in the Spence to turn a number 1 ruckman.

Not that i want to take him out of defence, but does anyone think Martin is a realistic option as a permanent ruckman should we not get Warnock? He's certainly mobile enough, but i have the feeling he'd be another PJ, great around the ground but a bit lacking in the actual rucking contest.

I tend to disagree, unless Vickery/Mckernan drops we shouldn't take a ruckman at this point.
Trengove is 196cm and even if he grows he will still be undersized for a ruckman in this day and age, Mckernan is the same size but he can play forward, while Trengove plays in the backline, which is the place we need the least help with.
With these picks it's much more important to take one of the standout forwards or mids while the average rucks should last until our 3rd rounder.

It's at our 3rd rounder(around pick 35) where we should start looking at rucks, we should be able to pick up a decent ruck with this pick as any one of Roughead, Redden and Browne should still be available.
Also, seeing as picking a ruckman is a gamble because they take so long to develop, it's a lot safer to go the 'sure thing' and pick mids with our PP + 2nd rounder... Sam Blease and Tom Swift anyone?

Re: Missed on Warnock

Yeah, Sam Blease - but I doubt he will be available, still, I like Michael Walters aswell, classy left footer with plenty of scope..

Shoenmakers would be a good pick up for us..

Tom Swift isn't exactly a sure thing, quite the opposite really. Plenty of previous injury troubles (mainly knee) but if we can develop him right he'll be a still at 17/19.

I was more making the point that the midfield/forwards at this point are a lot more talented than the rucks, as the next best ruck here would probably be roughead/redden, in comparison the next best mids would be someone like blease/hill/swift, even though swift isn't a 'sure thing', he could be the next joel selwood, or the next beau muston...

Robbie Warnock is a done deal

My little brother who is good mates with mathew told him yesty that robbie will be at melbourne. He said if freo and melb cant strike a deal melbourne will get him in pre season draft. He also said that Robbie will be living in the big smoke by end of september with Mathew.Great news for melbourne and there fans...

Re: Robbie Warnock is a done deal

Yeah ive always said it was a done deal...

Went to school with both of em and have spoken to Robbie about it. Although he was tight lipped he did give me the inkling that he'll be putting on the MFC guersey in 2009.

Feel free to put a MFC jumper on Robbie

Re: Robbie Warnock is a done deal

I'm merging these Warnock threads. At least it won't suck as bad as missing out on Judd if Warnock doesn't play for us.

Re: All things Robbie Warnock - merged threads

I'm have gone from being firmly on the Watts banwagon to the point where i don't care now. Rich, Naita or Watts will do me just fine.

Re: All things Robbie Warnock - merged threads

I want Watts regardless what happens with Warnock.

I'm with Dez! though. Warnock would be a great addition and if we can't strike a deal use the PSD.

Re: All things Robbie Warnock - merged threads

Naita is a once in a lifetime chance for a massive superstar.

It's a given we'll suck next year as well anyway, may as well go with Naita this year then pick up Butcher or whatever his name is next year (big forward who looks equally as good as Watts if not better).

Warnock isn't required, and might stop us getting Naita.

Naitanui is also a once in a lifetime for a massive bust...

Put it this way, would you rather Buddy and Roughy/ Brown and Bradshaw, or just Buddy/ Brown.
They're both great players on their own, but with a foil they are exceptional.

We need to load up with as many talented key forwards as possible, there will be many ruckmen available later in the draft.

The thing is, if Naita is a bust or not, we will still have the chance to take a gun forward every year if we're finishing near the bottom. There's usually a Jack Watts or two every year.

If Naita plays to expectations, we will have missed out - there's simply nobody else like him out there.

That's why Naita is the smart option. He won't be dominating next year or anything, we'll probably finish low and get a key forward or two next season with our early picks.

If we skip on Naita it isn't like we can just pick up another genetic freak ruckman who can play as a midfielder, has blistering pace and the best jump the league has ever seen.

I think you're buying into the hype too much, Naitanui is far too risky and Jack Watts is exactly what we need. You are also jumping to the conclusion that we are headed for a bottom finish which I agree it looks that way but we cannot be certain and can't put all our eggs in one basket. Remember 1997 when we finished last, the next year we finished 4th, anything can happen in the footy world.
