On cricinfo, can pick your all time side

I went

Hutton
Sutcliffe
Bradman
Ponting
S Waugh
Gilchrist
Warne
O'Reilly
Trueman
Larwood
McGrath

Would be good to see play cricket. Back that batting lineup to make enough runs and that bowling lineup to shit on everyone. With gilchrist as your keeper/number 6 and most of the bowlers bar McGrath able to hold a bat no point in an all rounder.

Not so sure Larwood was the best choice but his reputation from Bodyline makes him good to have in the side. Maybe should've chosen Thommo or Lillee there but whatever.

I would go:
Arthur Morris
Herb Sutcliffe
Don Bradman
Wally Hammond
Steve Waugh
Keith Miller
Adam Gilchrist
Ian Botham
Shane Warne
Fred Trueman
Glenn McGrath

12th Dennis Lillee

My All Time Ashes XI:

1. G.Boycott (ENG)
2. B. Ponsford (AUS)
3. D.Bradman (AUS) (C)
4. A.Border (AUS)
5. W.Hammond (AUS)
6. I.Botham (ENG)
7. A.Gilchrist (AUS) (WK)
8. S.Warne (AUS)

3 middle batsmen/2 all-rounders/3 bowlers

Jack Hobbs
Herbert Sutcliffe

Don Bradman
Wally Hammond
Greg Chappell

Keith Miller
Adam Gilchrist
Ian Botham

Harold Larwood (I actually meant to pick Trueman here but whatever. Larwood wasn't half bad either)
Shane Warne
Bill O'Reilly

Don Bradman was a complete arseh*le that no one liked. He may have been a great player but i don't think he was a good captain.

In any list it should be Steve Waugh who is captain as he was a great leader, one of Australia's best batsmen and before injuries in the mid 1990's he was a more than handy bowler.

From Aus

Bradman
Miller
Warne

Can't see any all rounder, including botham, who was better than miller between england and Aus.

and being brought up on a diet of Miller, bombing berlin, dining the princess, playing poker with his mates, and smashing the brits for a quick fire 100 and taking 5 for in the morning was the stuff of legends the brits had to make up heroes like him :)

Auto selections IMO.

would be as interesting to see how Aus best v UK best, pretty sure that Bradman would be the deciding factor in our favour though :)

Arthur Morris has to be a lock in for opener. He Averaged over 50 vs England and over 57 in England. He was also played a huge part in the 1948 tour.

1. Justin Langer (AUS)
2. Matthew Hayden (AUS)
3. Don Bradman (AUS)
4. Ricky Ponting (AUS)
5. Allan Border (AUS)
6. Steve Waugh (AUS)
7. Adam Gilchrist (AUS)
8. Shane Warne (AUS)
9. Jason Gillespie (AUS)
10. Dennis Lillee (AUS)
11. Glenn McGrath (AUS)

12. Robert Key (ENG)

anyone picking anything other than Sutcliffe and Hobbs is dreaming pretty much. Sutcliffe averaged 65 odd over 20 matches and Hobbs 55 odd over 40 matches. And they in the 30 innings they opened together against Australia averaged a 84 run partnership

In an Ashes all time X1 i would still go for Morris for the fact his record was made against a far better bowling attack than that of Hobbs. Hobbs ashes average of 54, although brilliant, wasnt made against many real good bowlers, probably only Mailey and Noble have reasonable records.
His last 4 or 5 series against Australia he came across Clarrie Grimmett and hence he only made 2 centuries in that time.
Morris record was made against blokes with brilliant career records like Alec Bedser, Statham, Jim Laker, Edrich and Frank Tyson.

Can't have Arthur Morris in there. he filled his boots against England in 46/47 and 48 when they were very weak after the war. He was no better than Sid Barnes or Colin McDonald (who came just after him). His series averages against England were 71, 87 (great, but war-torn England - only decent bowler was Bedser), then 35, 33, 31. You say he made his runs against Tyson - in 1954/55 he made 153 in the first test (which was only Tyson's 3rd test) - Tyson then cut his run-up in half, and Morris made 70 runs in his next 8 innings. They never played against each other again. Laker played only 6 tests against Morris. Edrich was an allrounder. Statham only played 6 tests against Morris. Morris was notoriously Bedser's 'bunny' towards the end of his career.

There was a tendency in Australia from the 60s onwards to revere the 1948 side as the Greatest ever - Bradman certainly said so (but he always pumped up 'his' team - read some of his analysis about Tallon, McCool, Bill Johnson - rather embarassing now). However, most historians now say that was not the case. They were a fairly good side against a very poor opposition.

I think Hutton is the best ever English opener - Hobbs and Sutcliffe were very good but they played in a high-scoring era, and there were two of them. Hutton was clearly the best batsman in the world between Bradman and Sobers.

I would be tempted to place Clem Hill in the side - his record was very good - not high average back then, but he was very often the key performer in a victory.

rethinking mine I'd pick Miller ahead of Larwood, but bat him at 7 behind gilchrist
