Previously a bit of a whipping boy because of his occasional softness now seems to be a complete player.

His leadership at times last year was top notch and in today's game was fantastic as well.

Kicking that goal from 60 out, taking a couple of contested marks in the last quarter.

Has really stood up over the last few seasons.

That is all?

Been a gun for quite some time. Hugely underrated and like a good red just getting better with age.

Didn't mean a gun for just one day ;) Think he's been a gun for a long time taking crucial marks and cutting off defensive play. Just thought he played an awesome game today.

Mackie has never been soft so I don't agree with that assessment. His biggest problem has been his lack of awareness and laid back approach sometimes meant when running and carrying the ball he could get run down sometimes. That's not being soft at all, just an awareness issue. He otherwise always competes to the best of his ability. Great game today though.

Timely thread, he's been exceptional during Chris Scott's reign.
His 2011 GF was very underrated.
I was a bit surprised that he didn't go a bit better in last years B&F count.

I had no doubt that he had no doubt that he was gonna slot home that 60m drop punt for a goal.

Plays to his strengths most of the time , is underrated when forced to play to his non strengths as in today his 1o1 marking. His occasional loss of his feet , or running over the ball type thing is not great but ..total package a reliable defender who brings long accurate conversion to his game when allowed to run forward.

He had his best year last year and he carried on that form today. A lot of good marks under pressure in defence.

Loved him ever since he received a hospital pass from Ben Graham in hos 1st or 2nd year, stood his ground, and was damaged. Had kicked 3 goals already, iirc, v NM at Geelong.

Then he lost his way a bit, not for long, played wing to hbf, and the rest is like someone said, a maturing very good bottle of red.

He really won me over v Haw in 09, when Scarlo and HT both were injured before 1/2 time, showed us what to look forward to post Scarlett.

He is after all a triple premiership player, and absolutely vital to our setup, unique and remarkably durable. Footy smarts.

Gun and today was just proof of it for the rest of the afl. Will be up there in the Brownlow count today you'd think.

He and Lonergan have taken the mantle from Enright in terms of how underrated they are by the media. Enright was finally picked up on, but Mackie (and Lonergan) have been underrated for a long time now. I can remember many great performances defensively from Mackie against Hawthorn specifically.

Thats completely correct. Mackie can only kick on his right foot and this was half his problem. He often took that one step too many to kick on his favoured right and bang he was run down. I could count on one hand the times he has kicked on his left during his whole career!!!!! He still doesnt kick on the left but somehow his awareness has dramaticallt improved and over the past 2 years it has been rare for him to be hunted down. He was enormous last year and that continued today. Have always been a Mackie fan but plenty of cats supporters bag him.

I still think he suffers from laziness on occasion, and as others have pointed out, his lack of awareness. There has been a few games in the last couple of seasons where he just hasnt seemed to be wanting to put effort into contests and whatnot. However, he showed today that when he plays well, he really plays well, and is a vital part of our team.

He really is underrated, but then again, pretty much our entire defense is except for Enright and maybe Taylor (the opposition are finally wising up to how good Taylor is.) If he continues to play well throughout the year, will be a huge boon for us. And his monster goals are always awesome.

Spot on. Can't think of too many defenders that could play on franklin AND rioli if required, push up to a wing and goal from outside fifty at crucial times.

As for Lonergan, has Franklin , Cloke and co. in his pocket, and has done for some time.

Based on the evidence yesterday he's developed into a real general down back. Never understood why he's been such a whipping boy, as a neutral I have always admired his ability.

I visited the Hawk website last week and Clarkson was saying that Mackie is a major instigator of quick ball transition and was a serious concern in his strategies.
Recruiting Rivers and having the mates (Mackie) playing together is a big win for the defense this year.

Knew he'd bang that goal. Never doubted it.

Our new Scarlett.

Im all for credit where credit is due and Mack over the last few years has certainly taken his fair share of scalps and earned the respect and played great... but that my friend is a bit too big of a call for mine.... I seriously doubt there will ever be another Scarlo...

If you mean in the role he plays then perhaps....;)

Go Catters

Agreed. The Mackie is soft thing is bullshit.
