Carlton have overlooked versatile runner Andrew Walker for Friday's crucial AFL clash with St Kilda at the MCG.
Walker, who has recovered from two shoulder operations, was pushing hard to be included in the Blues line-up after two solid games with the club's VFL affiliate, the Northern Bullants.
The No.2 pick in the 2003 draft trained sharply on Thursday morning but it's believed he was told of his fate in a one-on-one discussion with coach Brett Ratten after the session.
Walker walked away from the chat, visibly upset, ripping off strapping on his hand.
Although Ratten had last month earmarked Walker's return against St Kilda, the Blues were concerned Walker was not match hardened enough.
"I think Andrew thought he was more of a chance than just in the mix," Blues assistant Brett Montgomery said.
"He's gone back and played two games at the lower level, been pretty good but he's not the sort of guy we want to risk.
"Andrew's super sharp, best trainer, one of the most physically gifted players at the club, it's just a matter whether he had enough footy or not."
Much has been made of the team's improved fitness following the appointment of former Western Bulldogs and Cricket Australia conditioning expert Justin Cordy.
The Blues have been the competition's final-quarter specialists in the past month, running out games like no other team.
From rounds seven to 14, the Blues have kicked 297 points in final terms, 55 points more than the next best finishers Hawthorn.
But Montgomery said he was impressed with the team's resolve in tough times during games.
"There's an enormous amount of spirit in the young guys here. Certainly the way we have been able to comeback in games is not something you relate well to young groups," Montgomery said.
"Usually you don't find that they've got that real will to stay in games once things don't go there way so that's been one thing, especially of late, that we've been impressed with."
The ninth-placed Blues have the chance to displace St Kilda from the eight to remain in the finals hunt.
But they will have to break a seven-year drought against the Saints.
St Kilda have won the past 10 meetings with the Blues, including round two this year. Carlton's last success against the Saints was in round 20, 2001.
While the Blues are determined to clear the poor record, Montgomery believes playing at the MCG and personnel changes will work in their favour.

funnily enough, i was at training this morning, thought Walker trained exceptionally but i did think when he left the midfielder's meeting with Ratt's he looked visibly pissed off, ripping strapping off his hand. I did think to myself either he's been told he has another week to go or he's hurt something.

However in truth i can't imagine he would of been told out in the park.

Thinking about tommorrow night its going to be a wet scrappy afair particular against a scrappy team like the Saints, Walk's would be better suited to the dry game under the dome next week against the Swans where we going to need alot of run out of half back and through the middle.

spot on..he will know its best for him,but would be itching to get out there with the seniors,so no doubt hed be upset

One more match with the Ants won't do him any harm. If he did in fact sulk off, then he needs to pull his head in and harden the f__k up. It's about what's in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club, not him! We cannot take an under-prepared player into such an important game.

Disagree. Walker is as passionate as they come, and I'm sure he was deadset on playing against the Saints. Although I'd much prefer to see him in the 1sts, one positive of being left out will make him all the more angry and revved up to break his way into the side.

I'd expect a very fired up Walker come Saturday.

Walker vs Anderson give me a break... what a stupid decision not to pick him. I would of picked him and played him deep fwd for something different

You would hope that he would harness his anger & come out & play an absolute blinder for the Bullants at the weekend, making it impossible for the MC to overlook him for next week's game against the Swans. I sympathise with him, but he should realise that the club has his best interests at heart, with a view to the long term, rather than a short-sighted, rush him back too soon attitude.

Exactly. All these people saying how great a decision it is, and how it will motivate him for the next game, get real.

Just because we are having a half decent run doesn't mean we don't have passengers...I could pick a handful that should make way for Walker, but there is no need to, as it has just been done for me.

Perhaps it's based on the theory we don't want to make to many changes to a team that just came off a good win.

There will be 2-3 players this week that will work their asses off knowing that they're out next week for Walker if they don't have a good game.

All the same, I think he should have been named. We've got Army, Banno, Hoops etc putting their names up in the next month as well.

Anyone would have been upset if you were passionate about playing, that's normal. I don't see any issue with him being upset, i think it's a good thing that he was disappointed he wasn't included.

The issue of whether he should be playing is really up to Ratten and the coaching staff and if they think it's the best for both the team and Walker that Walker doesn't play then i stand by it, either way i think we are good enough to beat the Saints with or without him.

I disagree,

Walker needs to play tomorrow. Im sick of reading about something like 7 years since we beat the aints. No.

I sat near a dopey smart ass kilda fan this year and copped it all night.

Here's a fantastic YouTube clip, we can't forget how good this bloke is.

It's not only his speccies and blistering goals but you've gotta love the way he just steamrolls blokes that get in his way when he's on the run.

Tend to agree. His performance last week suggested he's right to go. A bit disappointed he's not been selected.

I agree with the deep forward idea... You know Sam Fisher is going to be dropping in front of Fev all night so let's get Andrew Walker in one pocket, Betts in the other and jump on his head a few times either taking the mark or letting Eddie crumb off AW and Fev.

So if fev is being doubke or triple teamed then we just do what we do last week. Use fisher, wiggins and co.
Anyway if max doesnt play then fisher will have to play on fev

In the long run, i think this was a good decision. Tex has been out for a long time and needs to get his touch back. No longer can we just award games thinking a player is better than an other, they have to prove in the 2s or on the track that they are worthy of selection. This counts for everyone no matter their skills/reputation.

Hopefully Walks ripps it up this weekend on a HFF and slots straight in for the Swans game with no chance of reinjury. He is without doubt part of our long-term plans. He knows that - he'll be fine.

Couldn't agree more, the likes of Fisher,Goddard & Gram will have have a field day against our uninspiring forward line.

I'm sure Russell has them quaking in their boots.
