As a fanatical South supporter I have seen a lot more of Gilly than most. At South he generally played as a free running wingman averaging 25-30 possessions a game, a few goals and heaps of marks.
In the last few weeks he has shown us all what he can do at AFL level.
On the basis that Sandi comes back next year. Warnock, who will be a future star, and Sandi will share the ruck.
Is there any reason that Freo wouldn't use Gilly and Peake as running wingers.
For mine, Freo have cried out for that sort of combination to back up the hard ball winners in the middle.
The kid can play.:thumbsu:

Sounds good to me.

It's quite apparent now that gilly has had the shackles removed (perhaps mentally) that his form warrants first team selection. He is first team now. Harv's seems to like playing him.

When not manning up, goodes type role is not a bad idea.

We are lucky in the fact he can be used as a utility and w3e can use him to pinch hit ruck for us and float around the foward areas.

He's obviously incredibly versatile. Last year, while Pav was still recovering from shoulder surgery during the pre-season, he played a few games at CHF... and did okay from memory. I think his biggest problem was always his brain fades... maybe CC's more intricate game plan caused him to have to think too much, whereas with Harvs he's playing more on instinct... and getting it right more often than not these days. :thumbsu:

Exactly my thoughts. While CC had a great game plan for those who knew their roles, Gilmore never had a specifuc role, so he'd have to learn has he went, which rarely provided results. IMO, this is the reason CC couldn't win games in unfamiliar surroundings. Take the SCG for example. No one knew how to adapt to the complex game plan when the environment had been alterred. The same goes for when we had first choice players out.

I tend to think his biggest problem has been his lack of accountability and ability to contest. It's the reason why he was frequently dropped over the past few years, and the reason why he was bagged mercilessly on this board during the same period.

We know that he is great in space and usually delivers long, if not always well, but we may be forgetting that is he playing in a position in which opponents often run in opposite directions after the bouncedowns.

This kind of space suits Gilly, the role of a running midfielder may not. His saving grace is that he is contesting a lot better these days, and seems to be staying on his feet a bit better.

i admit he has been good in the second half of the year, but i dont like players that dont get the hard ball when required, which is why im not a great fan of gilmore and headland, but am a fan of matt carr and cookie. all four of the players mentioned have been a topic of debate in one way or another. i think gilly's decision making at times is poor, but if let off his leash, and told to run free, he could be damaging, but surely even the most staunch gilmore supporter cant say that he is adam goodes material:eek::eek:

I have imagined him in a Lucas type role. Get the ball wheel around, kick it through the goals from wherever you are. Nothing to think about, simple plan. Get it, kick a goal.
As others have pointed out though he has such a big tank it seems a shame to play him in a key position.

If playing effectively in the ruck and taking possession from the ruck and clearing the ball isn't classified as contested possession then I don't know what is?
