Skipper search takes in Pie highs

Ruckman Josh Fraser was Scott Burns' vice-captain in 2008

FINDING Collingwood's next captain is expected to take most of the pre-season, however, the club's looming high-altitude trip to Arizona may endorse its best candidates.
Most of the squad will embark on the USA camp from November 10; the third year it has featured in the Pies' preparations.
And it will do so without Scott Burns, who replaced Nathan Buckley as captain in March but recently announced his own retirement after 264 games.
Burns has since accepted an assistant coaching position with the West Coast Eagles.
It means three skippers in three years for Collingwood, and coach Mick Malthouse has flagged a thorough process to determine who should get the job.
However, chief executive Gary Pert believes a gruelling Arizona experience, which will include a nine-hour trek to the Grand Canyon, could determine a short-list.
"We have a number of very good leaders at the club," Pert told Sunday's Herald Sun.
"And such an extreme experience like a training camp in Arizona will no doubt allow some of the players with real leadership aspirations to stand out within the group.
"I don't think this is going to be the only selection path to the next captain. But I am sure that you will start to see those qualities come out in individuals in extreme circumstances."
Last week Buckley voiced his support of utility Nick Maxwell as captain, ahead of veteran forward Anthony Rocca and impressive young midfielder Scott Pendlebury.
Collingwood's leadership group for 2008 saw Burns flanked by vice-captain Josh Fraser and deputies Tarkyn Lockyer, Maxwell and Pendlebury.

No excuses, just because you're attending to your education.:p

I was just hoping that they'd speed things up a bit this time round. - last year was painful. They could have anticipated Burns' retirement; surely they've already decided who's going to get the gig?

Gee, that pre-season operation on Fraser looks like it's taken a turn for the worse. How come there's a small child's arm growing out of his stomach?

I'm happy for them to take their time as it does actually give Swan a bit of a run for it. He's put his hand up for a leadership role so that is a start.

I think he is probably still behind Fraser and Maxwell but the longer the process the more time Swan has to impress.

I actually would give it to Lockyer. Much maligned, but he has the same spirit at Burnsy, bleeds black and white, and is ever reliable. He would be my first choice.

Following that, Maxwell, then Pendlebury.

From an outsider looking in, I would have thought Swan was a fairly obvious choice. Can I ask, what does Fraser have that Swan doesn't in the eyes of the footy club?

From my point of view, the only thing Fraser has done to put himself forward as a captaincy option was getting himself drafted at pick 1!

Fraser has been in the leadership group for a few years although removed himself last year as he was injured too much. He's back in there as vice captain this year which probably makes him next in line. From reports though he is not a big fan of the many many meetings that now go on at AFL Level.

I reckon that it was only towards the middle and end of this year that Swan has started to show some serious leadership qualities. Probably comes from the confidence that he has his game pretty well sorted and can concentrate on other aspects of the game. He said himself a couple of weeks ago that he needs to start doing more and he will probably come into the leadership group.

I'd love to see Swan as skipper but not sure if someone can come from out of the leadership group to become captain.
