This is a brilliant article about this utterly, utterly weird situation we're currently in.

TBH, it’s not that weird. It can really be expected. The LNP and their media partners, with the right-wing nutters at the wheel, have been aping their US counterparts for some time now and this is standard fare. No depth is too low, no move too crass, no topic too sacred to not politicise. They idolise a pig in Trump and truly believe it’s the way to power. Quite how they make that leap of logic is unknown - after they attempted to present Dutton as Trump-like figure at the last election and lost by over 50 seats.

If anything at all goes wrong in our community, expect the government to be attacked by them.

I don't think the ALP will quite go to the same depths… not based on morals (which don’t exist in politics), but just because they don’t need to. The LNP is already down the toilet without a future, all the ALP really needs to do is watch.

Of course Our Dawn was the one who didn’t approve of Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic’s behaviour, and then suggested they could go back to where their parents came from.
Dawn Fraser: "I mean I wish I could be as outspoken, I suppose, as Pauline Hanson and say, "look, I'm sick and tired of the immigrants that are coming into my country."

That would be Dawn "daughter of an immigrant" Fraser, of course....

The fact they would even roll out Dawn Fraser is telling in terms of how out of touch it all is.

She won some swimming races 70 years ago, so many people wouldn’t have the slightest idea who she is.
IMO there's no mystery about what happened here.

These are political lobbyists who've effectively war-gamed how they wanted this media campaign to roll out over the days and weeks ahead.

On the white board in Campaign HQ in Sydney for week three they had 'Sports Stars' listed in capitals. And sure enough, on week three the same email that had been sent out to other selected groups was sent out to a long list of current and former sports 'stars' who might be convinced to sign up to their political campaign.

It's been suggested in a previous post that more than 1000 emails were sent out in that 'sports-stars' grouping to which around 70 agreed to give their name to the pre-prepared letter. That's a dismal hit rate of just 7% which explains why the likes of Dawn Fraser, Sam Newman, Wayne Carey, Steven Bradbury and Diesel Williams got star billing.

It's marketing 101 gone horribly, laughably wrong.

I’ve got no time for her but she was a member of NSW parliament.

The born-to-rules got caught flat-footed two decades ago by the arrival of GetUp and, severely rattled by that experience, are determined to own the behind-the-scenes activism sphere.

It often looks clunky and hamfisted but no matter, given the way the oligarchs now own all the means of diffusion, they may well still succeed.

abc melb interviewed russell mark on the open letter calling for a RC endorsed by sports personalities yesterday afternoon

few things

1. russell mark once ran as a lib candidate in the seat of ballarat (not declared)
2. russell used the word 'woke' as a universal criticism explaining away the world we live in at the moment (my tl/dr summation of his contribution - i gave up listening at that point)
3. russells efforts either followed or preceeded a 10 minute love-in with jeff kennett
4. the regular stand-in radio presenter (justin smith???)* is a shameless LNP fanboi and an abomination of an appointment - whoever has this nutter on the stand-by payroll should hang their head in shame

You've got typical old fogies commenting on Farcebook that Dawn is a "true" Aussie and all the other usual racist dog whistling.

How many votes did Mark get at that election?

A one-term state MP from 40 years ago.

As I said, many people in today’s community wouldn’t even know who she is.

The right wing is stuck in (at best) the 1990s.
Oh I have no time for her. But I dispute no-one knows who she is. Anyone who follows sport would likely know her.

It's just one of those things that's so transparent, you wonder how they could possibly think it will work.

Like people will say "You know, I was on the fence about a royal commission, but Lleyton Hewitt and Grant Hackett reckon it's a good idea and they're of course among the most respected political and social commentators of our time, so I guess I'm in favour of it now."

The people who already agree with them will say 'cool'; the people who don't, or who are undecided will say 'why do I care what some has-been sports star thinks about the real world?'

Have they done film and TV stars yet? Maybe they could get Mel Gibson to sign on.
