Was thinking if the powers that be decided to grant the gfc their own annual anzac day match who would you like it against?

peronally would like to see us against the blues or hawks, no idea why tho

thoughts??

Probably Collingwood and Essendon! They draw the biggest crowds.

I am happy to keep it the way it is, because they have embraced the concept well and they are forging a tradition that is worthy of playing on such a day.

No matter where they are on the ladder - I enjoy watching the game.

biggest, bigger, better - the only thing the minnow teams are left with forging is re-location.

I think we better just hold our breathes until 2011! With ANZAC Day falling on Easter Monday, we maybe able to get a match on the 25th of April! I know it would be awesome if that could happen because like many others, my family went to and returned from war. To watch Geelong play would be incredible.. highly emotional!

stop changing things?????!?

shit! i've got hairs on my arse older than that 'tradition'!!
Obviously the 'tradition' argument doesn't hold great value here. But why are we always looking to change everything? Personally, I love and look forward to the ANZAC Day game as it is now, even with Essendon and Collingwood.

It ain't broken.

why cant geelong get involved in the opportunity arises? we may not fill the mcg but i think we could fill the dome against any vic based team.

Every tradition has to start somewhere

Geelong was one of the founding clubs of the Vfl and also the only club that suspended playing games during the WW2,we have as much right as any,and more than most to play on ANZAC day.

It's not a question of being 'big enough' or 'important enough'. I just don't see any good reason to play on Anzac Day. The whole reason it's such a huge event now is because it is Collingwood vs Essendon, happened last year and will happen again next year. If it were Hawthorn vs Geelong you wouldn't get anywhere near the same sized crowd, and frankly it would be Just Another Game.

but that's just it jester - all we play is "just another game" - even you are down playing your clubs role in the league. there's about six clubs that no-one seems to give a **** about playing asides from their own fans, which, tho nothing is wrong with that, WILL lead to extinction of the weakest.

essendon weren't that great - sheedy made 'em so.

it's a shame dees fans are lack-lustre coz a melb (1st city) v geelong (2nd city) rivalry is an obvious match-up.

It is a good match up...but would it rival the rivalry round also?...my head is spinning..

Speaking of head with all the discussion about father/son rules etc why dont we the number 1 side for effective procreation hijack mothers day off the calender and make it our own.

We could promote the fact our boys can swim beautifully and perform in a manner that is quite supportive of the mothers day theme

Whilst opposing a side who are a pack of momma's boys like hmmmm...melbourne

With the right marketing, any two teams would get the same crowd and same vibes. Would the grand final be a non-event if it were Port-Freo? The players would be up for it and the league is meant to be sporting contest on a level playing field. Are Essendon or Collingwood players any more passionate or motivated than Geelong players? Why should our players be denied the opportunity to play in marquee events? And why should our supporters be denied access to marquee events? Having only Collingwood and Essendon play is entirely detrimental to our club.

The Anzac day match could be the grand final replay or the top two victorian clubs or it could be first v last to symbolise the overwhelming odds faced by the original anzacs. It doesn't have to, it sholdn't be, the preserve of two clubs whose only claim to the event is based upon marketing.

Collingwood and Essendon aren't that far ahead of us where it comes to popularity, but keep this up and we will fall along way behind.

But games have been played on ANZAC Day for decades, between different clubs. Essendon and Collingwood only began on the day in 1995. It only became the event it is today because of the fantastic show that they put on.

Leave it to Essendon and Collingwood. I've been to plenty of ANZAC day games since '95. It is the sheer feeling and awe of the moment that makes it great. Good on Essendon (Kevin Sheedy mostly) and Collingwood for embracing it.

Why would other clubs want to play ANZAC day. Revenue. It is disgusting that supporters of clubs fail to realise that ANZAC day is about the diggers who died for our country.

Leave it be.

Geelong knows this better than most clubs,as it was the only club that suspended their season because they had so many players in the armed forces.

I think you would find all clubs would embrace it if given the opportunity.

So I take it Geelong is the club you support after Collingwood and Essendon?

If the highlight of your season is watching other teams play and you think they are so fantastic then why don't you stop pretending to be a cats supporter? After all, you've stated that you'd rather see other teams playing in marquee events rather than Geelong.

Don't be ridiculous. I bleed navy and white. But that doesn't stop me calling a spade a spade.

If, for example, Geelong and Collingwood had made ANZAC Day what it is, I'd feel the same. I'd want it to still be the "preserve of two clubs", as you put it.

What would you feel then? Because I don't know if you're arguing it from a Geelong or an 'equality' viewpoint.

Who mentioned anything about it being the "highlight of (my) season"?

And I never "stated that you'd rather see other teams playing in marquee events rather than Geelong". I would have loved if Geelong had the ability to create what Essendon and Collingwood have done. Unfortunately that game is now theirs, and rightfully so.

Dont fall for the negative emotionalist arguments that some try to put up here when the reality is you are completely entitled to your opinion and you have argued it quite reasonably.

Control freaks or moderators whatever you want to call them are entitled to their opinions also...we just dont have to agree with them all the time surely....or do we?

I find the suck hole mentality a little hard to take at any time really let alone on an internet forum where surely it should be completely unnecessary.

So keep it up.
