Do not listen to this man.

No, do listen to me.

Macland is a special place.

Re: GD Debating Competition: Round 2 Draw, Results and Subsequent Discussion

Horrendously overpriced machines.

Come at me Mess.

Re: GD Debating Competition: Round 2 Draw, Results and Subsequent Discussion

When I compare my PC experience with my Apple experience there is not one solitary thing a PC will do to meet my needs better than my Mac.

I've had one for four years with barely a problem in that time. And the minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently and free of cost.

"Overpriced" assumes all I buy is the machine. I'll pay more for something that performs better. And for what I paid (about the same as a high end notebook of the time) I consider it value for money.

I bought a HP laptop running XP about the same time as the Mac. A slow, cantankerous, fault ridden pile of crap.

Oh, and so we don't cause a massive derailment of the debate, I'll put up a PC V Mac thread.

Re: GD Debating Competition: Round 2 Draw, Results and Subsequent Discussion

Used both extensively. Nothing compares to the sleek and ease of using a Mac, also great for video & image editing which I do a lot of.

Couldnt agree more. Windows>>>>Daylight>>>>Steve Jobs Agenda>>>>Apple

Re: GD Debating Competition: Round 2 Draw, Results and Subsequent Discussion

I've used both a fair bit too since my dad stupidly bought an iMac last year

anyways I really can't see what all the fuss is about, my PC was $800 and runs a lot faster and I like the layout of windows more than OS X

Also it feels like I'm missing out on something when I'm using a Mac, almost like the feeling of not being connected to the net.

Macs are generally for elitists with too much money.
the fanboys at either side are elitist

the only difference is the fan boys on the windows side usually come from a tech background whereas Mac fan boys have no idea what they're talking about.

Which is exactly why Macs are so good. They are ridiculously easy to use. They are far more intuitive than PCs. People with a poor tech background can do so much more with a Mac than a PC. People with a good tech background can do a lot more with a PC than a Mac.

When people pay more for Macs, they pay for ease of use, and reliability. An experienced mechanic might buy a car that's cheap but a little on the dodgy side because they know they can fix it. Somebody with no experience fixing cars is going to spend more money on a car that might otherwise be worth the same, but they won't have to worry about.

As it happens, I use both. I made the switch from PC to Mac a little while ago, buying a MacBook. It was/is great. The only problem was a few compatibility issues were making life difficult (e.g. watching games on afl.com.au which requires Explorer, didn't support some games, that sort of thing). I recently bought a cheap Toshiba laptop running Windows 7, and now I use both, depending on what I'm doing at the time.

I'll freely admit I'm one of those with limited technical ability. I've paid a (small) premium for a machine that has been near faultless for four years or so. And it's does everything I need it to do.

Easy

If you want a more reliable simple machine and are prepared to throw the $$$, get a mac, industry standard for audio/visual editing ect.

However if your more of a computer nerd like me, enjoy overclocking your computer, want to use a proper computer operating system (face it, Both windows and Apple sucks, Windows a little less) want to be able to customize, and generally know a little bit about PC"s, they work out far cheaper and will be just as reliable.

Im a PC man, im forced to use macs now and then, im not going to say they are crap because they have carved up a nice niche market and are crucial to a lot of industrys, However i couldnt use a MAC for what i do with my computer

Also i disagree about the remark about Nobody who likes MAC's are not from the industry background Every man i know who does computer repairs/maintains servers will always lean towards a mac due to the fact it will work first time, and remain working, Windows only realised a few years ago that linking computers should not be the most complicated task ever.

I gave up computers with Windows-based operating systems in favour of Macs about 8 years ago. Since then I haven't had an issue - not a virus, no catastrophic software failures, no spyware, nothing has gone wrong and I haven't had to play mechanic unlike with windows. My Macs have just worked flawlessly throughout that time. I've just got a new Macbook pro and it's a beast. CS5 runs like a dream, you can flip around massive PSD like no tomorrow. But I must stress, I use my Mac for work, I'm in an industry where it's standard; as for games that's what the Playstation is for.

As for overpriced, so is my 65 fastback, but I have no desire to drive a Corolla again.

Double the cost of a simiarly specced PC isn't a small premium.

No need to pay for antivirus if you know what you're doing.

Paying for repair/maintenance is even more ludicrous.

My whole point is that this is for people who DON'T know what they're doing. Not everybody is a computer nerd. A lot of people don't know what they're doing, and don't have the time, energy or inclination to learn. For them, investing in a Mac is a much better option.

Take away the cost of antivirus and PC repair/maintenance (for those who can't do it themselves) and it's a lot smaller.
anti virus? AVG

and you should really be using anti virus on your mac as well; they do have virus's too.

As far as repairs and maintenance, it's a computer not a car. Google will be able to solve 99.9% of problems for you. That being said I've had 0 issues with windows since I got XP in maybe 03 (Currently using windows 7 - never used vista).

I really think Mac people like to exaggerate the problems a windows user faces on a day to day basis.

Yes, it is.

But it doesn't mean a Mac is the better machine.

You hardly need to be tech savvy to install an anti-virus program.

But once again you've proven my point on how Mac users exaggerate everything.

I rarely post on BF these days but thought id relate my story.

Ive only ever used macs at work, many years ago, and found them unreliable pieces of dogs crap. I've always used PCs at home.

I recently bought a brand new HP Pavilion dv6 laptop (highest in that range) and the HDD died in less than 2 months. The replaced HDD then died two months later. I've lost data each time. I'm just a standard user, no overclocking etc.

I got fed up an took the advice of a mate and got a macbook pro. So far, its the best machine ive ever used. It took a few weeks to customise it properly, but i now have it working like a PC (right clicks, access to device manager, sys props etc) and i couldnt be happier.

The moral of the story is: Keep your mind open re mac vs pc. They are so similar in so many ways that you may as well be arguing asus vs acer.

Oh, and NEVER, EVER by a HP product.
