Training Report: Monday Jan 8, 2018
A cool, cloudy morning for the first day of 2018 training. Early thundery showers cleared in time for the time trial.
Not Training: Jamie Elliott and Levi Greenwood.
Happy to answer any questions you may have.
Was Geoff Walsh there?
Seriously...love these reports...keeps me in touch & part of it!

I think that's the first time Shaz has run under 7 minutes. That's a 9 second improvement since the first time trial in November. If he can keep working on his endurance and speed, then he can become a complete player. Given his injury history, it is good to see steady improvement nonetheless.

You can't hide anywhere on the field these days. I just worry that he lacks the professionalism to be an AFL player.

8 mins over 2000 is very slow. I don't expect Phillips type figures I just expect him not to be lapped and embarrassed. It's only 4 and a half laps. He should be wiping 10 seconds off his time every time he goes out there coming from the low base he started at.

tend to agree, but in fairness I have backed a few horses who would struggle to run 2000m in 8 minutes.

Wasn’t Saintly that’s for sure.

Running is a funny thing, especially against the clock, most kids run PBs when they're pushed by an opponant, very rare to see a kid run a PB off their own bat which is pretty much what Kirby was doing seeing he was a mile behind the second last runner, if you paired Kirby up with a kid of similar abilty both would run 20 seconds faster trying to beat each other.

My boy (u9) is capable of around 1.15 over 400 if paired against a boy of similar abilities, when he runs solo at training i can't get him to go sub 1.30.
Do you ever run with him to help him pace faster in training?

I've done a VERY unscientific comparison from Nov 27 to Jan 8 in terms of improvement (NA means I didn't have a comparison timing for the first 2km time trial):-

Nov 27
Phillips: 6:04
Greenwood 6:10
Smith 6:11
Sidebottom 6:21
Crisp 6:27
Aish 6:28
Crocker 6:31
Adams 6:32
**Nathan Murphy 6:32
Blair 6:36
** New Rookie Jack Madgen 6:36
Howe 6:39
Mayne 6:40
Will H-E 6:40
Broomhead 6:41
••Stephenson 6:44
Maynard 6:44
Fasolo 6:47
Dunne 6:58
Varcoe 6:59
Cox 7:05
Grundy 7:12
••Tyler Brown 7:16
Sam McLarty 7:21

Jan 8
1. Tom Phillips 6:00 (-0:04)
2. Smith 6:07 (-0:04)
3. Flynn Appleby 6:15 (NA)
4. Steele Sidebottom 6:16 (-0:05)
5. Jack Crisp 6:17 (-0:10)
6. Max Lynch 6:18 (NA)
7. Nathan Murphy 6:19 (-0:13)
8. Ben Crocker 6:28 (-0:03)
9. Jarryd Blair 6:33 (-0:03)
10/11 Jaidyn Stephenson & Jack Madgen 6:35 (-0:09) + (-0:01)
12. Jordan DeGoey 6:36 (NA)
13. Tom Langdon 6:39 (NA)
14. Lynden Dunn 6:44 (-0:14)
15. Travis Varcoe 6:46 (-0:13)
16. Brody Mihocek 6:50 (NA)
17. Matty Sharenberg 6:51 (NA)
18. Tyler Brown 6:52 (-0:24)
19. Mason Cox 6:55 (-0:10)
20. Tyson Goldsack 7:01 (NA)
21. Sam McLarty 7:16 (-0:05)
22. Kayle Kirby 8:14 (+0:05)

Across the board everyone except KK has shown improvement. Massive gains by Dunn (seasoned player) and Varcoe as well as a sharp improvement by Tyler Brown and Nathan Murphy. Speaks well of the programs that Kevin White has set for them - gains without setbacks.

I'd be interested to do another comparison in the next 2-3 weeks if they run another 2km time trial. I'd bet with the match simulation and further weights work there will be another few smaller gains to be made.

TBH it's quite a good sign with a good deal of the defenders running sub-7s as well as the 190cm+ boys.

I was also surprised by his time (6.18).
Very good for a big fellow.
Hopefully he can develop into a good Ruckmen/Forward.
At 19 years of age (200cm 97kg) he has plenty of time.
Thought it may have been a typo....lol

That's impressive and if he can play, could become a real asset.

Geez I'd like to have seen Peter Daicos's 3k time trial times in his forward years!
Didn't matter once the real stuff started

Though Daicos was a Very Special Talent

Reckon Scharenbergs time is most disappointing. I mean 4 seconds faster than Cox? Even if he is going to play key this year he has a lot of work to do.

What was his pre Christmas?

Yet Schaz was 10 seconds quicker than Goldsack who we all know is quick.

Nearly 1/2 the squad didn't even partake so not sure how much weight we need to attribute to the outcomes.

I was worried Kirby might come back from the Christmas break in similar condition to his 1st pre-season and while he seems to have lost some condition over that break I think it's a massive positive that he's returned able to run the time trial at all. Speaks to me of a changing mindset in terms of his professionalism. Not there yet but certainly heading in the right direction. Hopefully we'll see improvement in any further trials this preseason and we'll see even better returns from him next pre-season and beyond.

That's the $1M question. Not sure he's shown much yet but still young for a ruckman.

I think that Kirby's time in the trial is a big concern. I know he's no endurance athlete but for a professional footballer to not be able to crack 7.30 after a year in the system does not speak well of his efforts to improve himself. A massive unit like Cox is running sub 7's.

If he can't get his mind around being a professional athlete then he won't make it.

Just my 2 cents but I'm concerned.

Other way of looking at it
MASON BROKE 7 minutes

mason Cox is a fast runner. Think back to his chase of Dangerfield last year. He made ground on him over a long chase. He has a wide turning circle, but he is a bad one to choose if you are looking for a lumbering ox to provide a comparison to make Scharenberg (or anyone else) look bad.

BTW, I love Kirby as much as anyone and I want him to make it and it is somewhat pleasing that he hasn't come back a massive blob after xmas like he did last year but he needs to be improving those times. He's a pro now. It's a concern.

In other words and in relation to Kirby, he ran 0.05 seconds slower that is, five one-hundreths of a second slower than November 27. F..k me, the end of the world is nigh.

Finally, we get the fwd pocket we've all been after. Welcome Mason Cox.

BTW, what is it with your name? Am I missing something? Or is from the teenage vampire titalation books Dark Protector?

Dads nickname was darky , played with lots of the boys after 9 years in world war 2 ( 16 to 25) prior to coaching
Worked for wren, collingwood primary, collingwood cricket as well
At 6 foot 2 and no sleeves , gave the younger blokes confidence
Played mpfl to age 43

Ps was darky the protector but wouldn't fit lol

Think it's 5 seconds, but still not a huge amount after a couple of weeks away.
