There's a correlation with depression / mental illness and being self focussed. This guy was telling me that cases of depression and mental illness decrease in a country that is impacted by a big war or tragic event because people are forced to look outside themselves.

The people that i know with depression or mental issues possess either selfishness or narcissistic qualities.

Makes sense. But as a 19-year old with a healthy set of friends and family and no real responsibility, some self-centrism doesn't seem that out of the ordinary. Or maybe that's the ultimate sign of narcissism.

Only thing that is really making me miserable at the moment is my work situation. I finished uni last year, have not been able to find a post-grad job at all, hence am currently working for $12/hour. The place is freezing, and I'm so bored its not funny. Not to mention, now that I have a degree its like I've cancelled myself out from getting any sort of minimum wage paying job. I cannot explain the ridiculousness of this situation. I also really wanted to start my masters this semester, but alas there were no commonwealth places available this year which would've meant spending 10k for 1 semester. Otherwise really don't have much to complain about, have some great mates, boyfriend, get along well with my siblings, (not so much my father, but it could be worse).

Whats your degree in? This is a common story at the moment. Is going back to study in a field where job demand is higher (aged care/health care/trade) an option?

I did sports science first at uni, but soon found out the reaility was there are no sports science jobs unless you are really lucky. So I had to broaden my options in allied health, teaching and OHS.

I saw this sob story article about this chic with a journalism degree doing all these internships trying to become a magazine writer, but no one would hire her. But the reaility is no one needs a magazine writer these days! Especially with the internet.

Sometimes people have to suck it up and realise the world cant always cater for their special interests. Theres only so many personal training, journalism, sports science and acting jobs out there. Keep your options open!!!!

I used to be happy. Then I got pissed off with everybody asking me if I was happy, as if it mattered.

One day i heard through a friend of his that he said I would benefit from doing some 3rd world charity work in order to get me to look outwards for a change. I got the message.
I'd be interested to hear more about this. Did you go overseas?

Yeah you're not wrong, but the thing is people often get jobs where their degrees are virtually irrelevant. I guess the degree in part is meant to demonstrate that you're not an incompetant stooge, although there are several people who might be fine at uni but when it comes to putting their knowledge into practice they suck. E.g. when you go to a bad doctor or a lawyer who has NFI.

I did a legal studies major because it interested me, there are no jobs in the field though at the moment. I have applied for other jobs which are unrelated to my interests, but still not getting anywhere. People often ask me if I'm gonna do law, but I can't see the point of going to uni for another four years, then not being guaranteed a job anyway. I've even been a volunteer at a legal office for several months now, but I'm still not getting anywhere.

There are many fields though where the degree is simply a prerequisite. As an employer, it's still one of the first things I'll look at for any CV I get sent through. The difference between a legal studies major, and law in terms of employment opportunities would be pretty significant. Of course you are going to find qualified lawyers and doctors (and other professions) who are very poor in practice, but that fact doesn't help someone unqualified to get a job.

There are a lot of fields at the moment where it's difficult to get a job too, all you can do is keep trying.

Can relate to the job struggles. I was exceptionally happy throughout uni, realising afterwards what my lack of ever sacrificing a social life for study has done to my job prospects.

However, I'v got a good circle of friends, a supportive family, and live fairly comfortably despite mainly self inflicted money struggles.

I'm generally happy
My partner gets a lot of grief from her ex, visitation issues with their daughter etc which causes me stress seeing as she calls me dad and he now wants back into her life etc, and also coz he's just a plain dickhead, but we have a 7 month old girl of our own and if things get me down all I need is a smile from her and everything becomes not such a big deal anymore

This week, hell no, too much damn stress and what determines my next 6 months is completely in the hands of other people...
