Marsh actually took wickets in the tour matches, but hey Watson's economy rate was slightly better :drunk:

I can tell you England are happy with this decision...what would they want a known failure in Watson or Marsh who can win a game off his own bat. Experience my foot...what do you call Clarke, Rogers, Johnson, etc. They are not rookies!

So presuming it's a seamer over there I could nearly see us going for Siddle over Lyon provided we had some decent part time spin options. Clarke's bowling is very good but I'm sure he won't risk the back, Smith is a genuine part timer, um not much else so Lyon must play. And like someone said earlier there probably haven't been genuine all round options previously, but now Marsh M has emerged there's no excuse for playing Watson anymore.
As Warne once said "if it seams, it spins". Should always have a front-line spinner in your side. Just have Marsh over Watto

Voges bowls orthodox spinners, he is pretty handy actually.

He is like an annoying pest Watson, you want to get rid of him, but you can't. Meh, I guess I'll support him but fair dinkum if he fails in the first test, get rid of him!

It's a shame we don't have any part timers of the quality of a Marcus North, who was a good bowler. Clarke would be that level but obviously he can't be asked to bowl many overs. I wouldn't be dropping Lyon anyway, he'll do well against them in the Tests IMO.

Am I overrating Voges' bowling? Thought he was very good, always good for a wicket when need be, can keep it tight.

England would be over the moon to see Watson on the team sheet. Easiest batsman in the world to make bowling plans for

That is more than good for a 5th or 6th bowler...hey isn't that what Watson averages lol

The worst thing is...what does it tell Marsh....you can score all the runs you want but Watson scored a ton against the might of Simon Kerrigan he must play...

In tests for Watto.

If they want tighter bowling, Watson but he just can't bat anymore. I can see the logic given it looks like Johnson and Starc in the same lineup

Shane Watson is set to add to his 58 Tests for Australia when the first Test gets under way on Wednesday in Cardiff. With Mitchell Marsh slamming tons in both the tour matches, there was serious consideration that Watson could be dropped.

But the ineffective bowling of Marsh during the tour match could sway the selectors to bank on Watson to fill the No. 6 slot.
The ineffective bowling of Marsh...which took wickets?

How many wickets did Watson take?

This whole thing is ****ing ridiculous, it shouldn't even be a hard decision.

He is the Rhys Shaw of Australian cricket...so now we are picking a bloke because he 'keeps it tight'....how about we pick someone who gets wickets and is in better form. Watson is awful!

He's decent, I just saw North as almost good enough for full time spinner status. Especially in the last few years of his career, was very handy. Voges will do an okay job.

Oh I agree but I can see the logic.

Johnson and Starc in the same lineup always worries me. Particularly in tests

That is the thing Voges is 'experienced' enough to not play Watson. He is 35 with a ton of experience at FC and County level.

They bowled well in the West Indies, and frankly I would almost have played them anyway even if Harris was fit. You have Hazelwood who bowls long, accurate spells. Why are we needing a hack in Watson doing the same?

Just to continue my rant, what message are we sending Marsh? Works his ass off, produces the massive scores we are demanding of him (add his wickets as well) but then we stick with the under performing status quo. He'll stew on the sidelines, finally get his chance but his hot form will have dissipated and he'll probably fail, giving the selectors an excuse to stick with Watson after the Ashes.

It's bull**** treatment of an exciting young talent who has earned his spot in the First Test.

Yep. As soon as I heard Clarke say 'oh its a tough call between Marsh and Watson'...I fair dikum knew it. How hard is it? 2 tons, wickets.....versus 1 50 and squat all wickets.....

I've always liked Watson's bowling to be honest, but if he's batting in the top 6 he's a batting all rounder so this needs to be where he delivers first, and he hasn't been. And if the selectors pick Watson as backup for if Johnson and Starc are all over the shop they should pick Siddle to take the new pill and leave one of them out.

Situations like this would be fixed if Maxwell knew how to bat time and make 100 runs off 250 balls. Easily a good spinner and could bat at six, giving us Johnson, Starc, Siddle and Hazelwood. But Maxwell is too unreliable with the bat

That article quotes the bowling coach as saying that they are more comfortable with Watson's bowling for the first test. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm hoping that batting form is also taken into consideration for an all rounder - something the article doesn't seem to touch on.

Having said that I've resigned myself to Watson being there tomorrow and doing next to nothing.

From this article on cricinfo:
Shane Watson's greater experience of England and his capacity to bowl some of the kinds of spells Ryan Harris might have delivered for Australia appears set to squeeze him into the first Test team ahead of Mitchell Marsh

... I don't even.
