He hasn't got much competition in the "younger" field. Most of the shield openers are late 20's or worse.

He's been around for a bit now, 4 seasons. 3 hundreds in 4 seasons, and one of them was a fortnight ago.

I would've thought the primary consideration for Khawaja's replacement has to be making runs.
Youth isn't a compelling CV. A good track record is a better one.
Point me in the direction of anyone who deserves a shot, it’s a sad situation.

2 of those tons have been recent one in the Shield final and one two weeks ago. Should be planning a Kellaway and possibly Konstas pairing for 3-4 years down the track. Kellaway looks a mile more compact as a bat. There’s a few others but those two likely the top two, Dixon is one but for the real future.

Youth should be a factor you can’t just keep going stop gaps. Not as if these stop gaps are averaging 50 like Hussey was

Been around a bit 4yrs he started as an 19yr old, and is getting better every year, that's how you turn a kid into a good player in any sport build up every year.

I agree.

Don't get me wrong, he might well be our man. So might Konstas, or Hunt, or etc.

No player stands out.

The players who work the hardest will, in most cases, see their effort bear success.

The onus is on the players who want the spot to show they're a better option than their contemporaries.

At the moment, unfortunately, it's like the old "Don't have to outrun the bear" joke

If we are gonna open with Marnus I wonder why he didn't ask to open for Queensland in this last shield game just for a bit of practice? Yeah he made 50 at 3 but it was an opportunity to get feel for opening before being thrust into the position

Honestly given he’s batted at 3 for Australia plenty (and has almost certainly batted within the first few overs a decent amount), does he really need the 1 innings of officially opening? Can’t imagine he’s going to bat that differently whether he’s at 3 or 2

3-4 years down the track?

In any other universe Khawaja would have been retired off years ago. Good luck to Weatherald I hope he makes it, but you’re wanting to play a bloke who excels and Is excelling at 3 as Opener, surely that tells you that it is a specialist position and one that we need some options going forward

I think the Barmy Army is usually made up of either young backpackers out here for a fun Aussie summer on the beers or posh boomer retirees who pack out the five star hotels in each city as they go.

If the English grounds were as big as ours and getting Ashes tickets out there wasn’t as difficult (and expensive), I would imagine there would be just as much demand from our side for away Ashes series.

Given they weren’t able to travel here in 2021, there would be a lot of pent up demand.
Think its also got to do with the unfavorable exchange rate as to why more Aussies dont tour England.

Don’t disagree and we’ll be hoping Konstas and Kellaway make it not as convinced on Konstas though

Webster can't buy a run either fmd
He took 5/50 but that is secondary as we want him for for his batting, which has been terrible.

Think his form has sealed the First Test Team. Weatherald will open, Marnus at 3 and Green will be at 6. Rest of the side picks itself.

Weatherald had two great starts, looked terrific, but chopped on both times for 23 and 30. Very bowler friendly pitch.

Just to go off on a tangent.

Carey seems to be building nicely. Top scored in SA first innings with 59 off a 43 in the second innings of his last match. Taking plenty of catches and looking very assured behind the stumps.

I hope he has an absolute ball-tearer of a series and shoves it right up the Poms.

Both keepers will play massive roles if you get a chance have a look at Jamie Smith been outstanding for England

Carey a bit better with the gloves though from what I’ve seen

almost funny that both Webster and Weatherald have decided to run out of runs now

Edit: Who from this team will play in the next ashes? I doubt Hazlewood, starc, lyons, ussie go again, and smith, carey, cummins arn't far behind in age. That's a fair few players to lose all at once

Correct which is why this is the last stand…never have we had a side so old, this is the end of an era

Cummins will still be around.
