the worst move possible if this is a succession plan. Just no sense
It would basically make 2023 a wasted year where expectations were minimal.
We already did that a few weeks ago. A succession plan would at least give us confidence that 2024 and onwards might not be wasted years.

I’m actually warming to the succession plan for 2024 idea. It didn’t work for Collingwood and Essendon but it did for Melbourne, and I think it can work for us.

Seeing as though we never replaced voss and Schofield, we can probably afford to get both carr and rutten on board for next year. Would be two great acquisitions.

However, I feel like carr could be the successor. He makes more sense to me than Schofield. Not sure why, it’s just the vibe [emoji6]

When was Josh last here as an assistant? About the same time as Rehn?
Did he leave or was he pushed back then?
Was Ken coach back then?

He had success coaching his own side with North Adelaide, and seems to have been well regarded at Freo, so he has all-round experience.

Seemed a measured and studious type at North, spectacles and all :D And we know he has the "grit" (or something that rhymes with it) that Dimma had, so he wouldn't baulk at having his charges play unsociable footy!

Would want to know more about him first, but the notion is romantic and has some appeal.
Maybe Carr and Solomon (or Rutten) onto the panel?

  • what if Hinkley succeeds next year?
  • why would Ken agree to it?
  • why would he take the bombers job now rather than stay on for a lame duck year?
  • why give Hinkley another year then?
  • why would Ken show any commitment during a succession play?
  • why Carr?
  • why does Carr need a ‘mentorship’?
  • why would Bassett and Monty be ok with that?
  • why not Schoey?
  • why would any player come or work hard as the club has signalled it’s a ‘transition’ year?

It would basically make 2023 a wasted year where expectations were minimal.
"make"?

We're already there.

I think he left 2015, something like 2011-2015

Even though he wasn't born a Port player Josh Carr epitomised the hard at it take no prisoners blokes who made the club so great in the golden era of the Maggies.

Having him come back as the senior assistant to the donut king with a succession plan to take the reins from 2024 gets a yes from me, and there could even be the possibility of extra icing on the cake with kern spitting the dummy and bailing out mid-season.

The major stumbling block to any of the above though will always be the current hierarchy having the cajones to put such a plan in place.

  • what if Hinkley succeeds next year? - What is the likelihood of this happening after 10 years?
  • why would Ken agree to it? - He is an employee of the club, he doesn't decide who will be a senior assistant
  • why would he take the bombers job now rather than stay on for a lame duck year? - Have they offered him a job?
  • why give Hinkley another year then? - because he is contracted and we can't afford to cut him loose
  • why would Ken show any commitment during a succession play? - What will he do, leave? Win-win.
  • why Carr? - Why not? Maybe he is very good and well prepared to step up
  • why does Carr need a ‘mentorship’? - Call it what you will, he will be coming to move up
  • why would Bassett and Monty be ok with that? - again, if they're not they can leave. They're employees of the club, they don't make decisions on coaching positions
  • why not Schoey? - Why Schoey? Or how do any of us know he's not being considered?
  • why would any player come or work hard as the club has signalled it’s a ‘transition’ year? - a club is a continuous being, they're not here for one season

Wonder if Port wanted Kingsley to be successor to Hinkley, but Kingsley wasn't willing to wait so he took his opportunity now with GWS.

So now Port has had to move focus to another favourite son in the coaching ranks.

Thinking about it, a succession plan makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons.

I makes ken feel like he's being respected and not sacked while still contracted. It paints him in a good way and can leave holding his head up some what.
Every one will be well aware of what the coaching panel will look like in 2024 and will be well prepared when the transition occurs.

Imo the club without ever saying anything publicly were well aware of some long time well paying members falling away and a succession plan will give those members that have cancelled, some guarantee that change is on the horizon and to reconsider.
