Opinion Assistant Coach Wanted

Our list of coaches is likely to change in the not to distant future. It is a fact that good people will be poached.

There is a number of great people around with a wealth of knowledge, some still playing.

Who would you go after, make an offer too or think would benefit our club?

Simon would fit in with our recent trend of hiring former Brisbane players and would have a wealth of knowledge to pass on.

I think it's good for those guys to either:

a) step away from playing/coaching for a a couple/few years
b) get some experience at another club first

I'd love to see those kinds of guys come back to Geelong in the oncoming years, if they decide that's the career path they want.

Ling would be the front runner. I actually think he will be involved in a coaching role next year. Just not with us.

Harley would be a better administrator than coach I think.

Scarlett and Mooney will only ever be specialist coaches.

Will be interesting to see where SJ ends up eventually.

I would love to see Johnno spend a couple of years as an assistant at a Collingwood or Westcoast and then come back to take over the senior reins at Geelong.

I dont care who we pick up (if anyone) aslong as they are the absolute best for the club we can get.

Jude Bolton has been touted as coach in waiting i believe.

He would be a good pick up.

Who is the most likely out of our assistants to move on?

But I just dont see him being a senior coach.

His brain works on a different level to most. I'm not sure he could translate what he thinks.

I can imagine when Voss gets the chop at Brisbane Nigel Lappin might get a look in. He's now worked under two premiership coaches. I doubt Lappin would leave to be an assistant at the Lions.

The other possible departure could be Shane O'Bree - back to either Collingwood or Brisbane.

I can see either of those happening, Neeld has long wanted to coach at Geelong (been knocked back twice at least) and has shown himself to be quite capable as an assistant coach. Leigh Tudor also has runs on the board and is happy down at Cat Park.

Geelong also has also had a habit of picking up players whose record as players were either mediocre (Leigh Tudor, James Rahilly) or non-existant (Paul Hood, Dale Amos, Brendan McCartney). Steve Hocking probably deserves more praise than he gets for picking up these diamonds in the rough (and for knocking back Dank). The only miss-hit we have had was Daryn Cresswell

Agree with you about Johnson. He'd be a brilliant tactician and assistant coach, but not sure if he's a disciplinarian or manager which is what the head coach's role has become.

Neeld's future has probably been stamped I'm afraid.

Of our ex players I want Ling back just so we don't lose him to another club.

Would be interesting to have one of Hawthorn's assistants onboard just to learn about their system.

I thought it's been said in the past (eg with the Carlton job) that Ling's other business interests keep him too busy?

I think we had enough experience in the 90s with "very ambitious" Assistant Coaches.

Have heard Blake Caracella state he would one day like to become a senior coach. Haven't heard or seen anything from the others.

There is only 18 positions available in the country for a senior position. There seems to be a few coaches under pressure though. When the new coach comes in they will pick the best assistants available. It would be more likely we lose a coach to a senior assistant position. I would think getting someone from Geelong like Lapin or Blake would be a great pick up.

Other teams all want an inside into what we are doing behind closed doors.

I consider it a compliment towards the club.

Does Eardley remind you at all of dasher?

He seems to have a hint of Dasher about him.

That's true Fred but he's highly regarded and if he does change his mind and decides to go into coaching then it's better for us than against us.

I'd take Neeld as an assistant. Look at Bailey, Eade, Williams as former senior coaches who've gone to other clubs in an assistant type role and succeeded. I think it would be unfair to label Neeld after his stint as a senior coach at a rabble of a club and look back on the work he did at Collingwood, including the 2010 premiership.
