Assistant Coaches

Heard that Justin Longmuir interviewed today at Collingwood?!? Looks like he really is on his way out of WC.

Matthew Boyd joined the Pies coaching ranks today as well, incase anyone missed it.

I would rather do what Collingwood is doing this off-season. Collingwood are going big this off-season with revamping their entire coaching and performance division. I wish we would be a bit more proactive like them in this department and prioritize it over the playing list. Would rather swing the axe and make tough calls now on some people before inevitably having to do it in 12-24 months.

Funny you should say that because I think quite a few Collingwood people aren't happy with the minimal change they've seen so far just like we are with Freo. Boyd coming in as a coach is the only thing to happen for them so far to my knowledge. So in reality not much different to us (us having one coach go out) but we assume they have/are doing more. I'm still hopeful we'll see some solid changes this off-season but it's unlike us to crow about it until it happens.

Typical sh*t from Bond on the radio. Talking about structures of the footy department etc. I wish he would either grow a set and make changes where it's sorely needed or just leave.
Abbasolutely. The best Foot manager is Neile Balme. He left Collingwood at end of 2006 and arrived at Cattery after huge blood letting in Footy dept with Bomber Thompson surviving but all other assistant Gorn. Balme oversaw 3 Flags in 5 years and his return to Colon Wood wasn't successful being shafted fro Graeme Allen who got suspended for the GWS Drug Fiasco. Anyway Balmy ends up at the Tigers where surprise surprise all assistants Gornski except Dima Hardwick and now only one game away from a GF appearance. Either he's touched or a very shrewd, smart operator & ruthless I think its the latter.

Bond has been at Dockers what nearly 10yrs we are going thru our second rebuild - he's an average performer like his playing days and like some of his assistants ie Prior, Hale Rock, Guerra. Need to find the best Football Operations Manager who will work with Lyon but also who has the pedigree to challenge him on footy philosophy and team selections etc etc.

Brisbane went and head hunted Noble from Crows as a very good Footy Operation manager and I will not be surprised to see Lions make steady progress up the ladder in next 2-3 Yrs.

I reckon Marcus Ashcroft will get the Bullet from Gold coast been there from the start and they have under achieved. Footy OP manger can't be a job for life if the results ain't there- Chris Bond!!

If there's someone out there that would come to Freo and can do a better job than Bond, then we just have to get them for sure.

Rosich & Alcock need the balls to go and find that person similarly to when Rosich & Harris Headhunted Lyon but it appears its all too cosy and everyone is comfortable with their contracts but are they really interested in making the Dockers the Best they can be??

Someone once told me when you think you are the best person for a job just hope the person who is better doesn't apply for it.

Lyon needs to be surround by people he respects and will challenge him in on all fronts not the current "yes" men who are comfortable with their contracts and being part of the AFL "snouts in the trough" industry

So....

Lets target Luke Hodge. Coming out of the game and apparently this season was one of his most enjoyable playing seasons in a long time because he was a part-time coach for the young brigade at Hawthorn and he loved doing it. Certified leader and proven champion from a successful club. Fresh out of playing the modern game and loves football. Why not?

We should have been all over him

Why would he come back to a club that let him go when he asked for a pay rise.

He probably didn't do it too cleverly though, with the threat of walking to the Eagles.

Pretty unceremonious though, I'm told he was marched out so he couldn't steal club intellect.

To be fair I think J-Lo was looking for experience away from WA. Didn't work too well for Sumich and as mentioned he didn't leave our club in the best of circumstances.

I do agree with Wehavethepassion.

I think a bit of shake up at Chris Bond level might be warranted. Along with a couple of assistant coach changes. We will have at least 1 change with Stone heading off but I'd like to see another like Prior who has been around for sometime.

Saints pick up Henry Playfair from the Swans. Hopefully there'll be some news from us after Sunday regarding our structure and especially hopeful about some new additions.

I wouldn't hold your breath. I think we are set to stay the course, and re-adjust around Stone leaving.

And for what it's worth, if this happens I think we have missed a big opportunity.

Not sure. I think we'll either pull off a huge coup or as you're suggesting hold the course. Maybe Im just hopeful though and it's wishful thinking.

I Hear majority of players at west coast have had a gutfull of knees Mitchell already and they are none too happy he will be coaching next year. He and Hodge were generals at hawthorn but it didn't transfer to the eagles.

J longmuir to Pies and rejected Crows offer, held in high regard it seems

This should never had happened - he should be at the Dockers in place of Guerra or Hale or Rock or as Stone's replacement.

Also if Subiaco win today's GF then schofield would have got them into 4 GF's for 3 wins.
Obviously knows something about coaching and is a hard arse by all accounts. Should be looked at but I think the egirls are on his radar??

Agree, we should look at him.

The other person we should look at is Marty Mattner. Back to back Premiership coach in the SANFL, Premiership player at Sturt and Sydney swans.

Chris25 - What is your opinion on his coaching?
