Australian ODI squad Announced

Amazing the amount of talk on the Grandstand commentary yesterday about the BBC/TMS team having "massive questions around Maxwell's absence from the Australian squad in all forms" - only for Maxy to respond with an innings that basically sums up the major issues with his career: cameo run-a-ball 20-30, gets jammed up for a couple of overs, plays stupid shot, out.

If he genuinely wants to be seen as a senior batsman that can be relied on, he needs to start playing like one when given the opportunity; or he'll just look and sound even sillier the next time he jumps on SEN for a bitch session.

Stupid shot? Didn't he get trapped in front by a massive inswinger? Good ball. It happens. Thought Maxwell looked as good as anyone bar Stoinos.

Thought he looked great and was trying hard to apply himself. Got a cracking nut....it was like he was trying to reverse ramp it!!! Some people will just find a reason to criticise.

It should be Ahmed no questions but heaven knows why he isn’t in the current t20 squad
Not helped by inability to field/bat. Selectors tend to overlook those types these days, rightly or wrongly.

Could be wrong but I think we have been often flogged in odi series just before recent WC wins. At the of the day these games mean almost nothing and are about experimentation, then will be forgotten about in 1 weeks time.

I remember in the lead up to 2007 that Hoggy wasn't in the side during the tri-series (came back in towards the end) and England won. We experimented with 4 quicks and part timers bowling spin then reverted back to what we'd been doing the previous 4-5 years.

Our formlines leading up to 2011 and 2015 were pretty good. Can't remember much about team changes other than Bailey not featuring much in 2015.

Clarke and Faulkner didn’t play the first few games due to injury in 2015. Mitch Marsh and Bailey filled in. Smith wasn’t in the side about six months before the tournament. We couldn’t decide between Cummins and Hazlewood either and changed Watson from number three to number five/six mid tournament. We weren’t as settled as most World Cup winning teams were really.

2011? Wouldn’t be talking about that too much as an Aussie fan. What a disaster that was. Can’t remember what results were like outside of not making the final just remember having Krejza as our spinner and trying to blast teams out with pace despite the pitches offering our quicks nothing. Jeez that sucked.

I barely remember 2011. Subcontinent World Cups never get the same press.

Failing with all out pace does sound familiar.

Wasn't the most memorable tournament, but Kevin O'Brien chasing down the 300 the Poms set was outstanding as was Dhoni in the final and same with the ubiquitous tense NZ v South Africa knock out game. For laughs I do recall Ponting spitting the chewy at Steve Smith after the over-eager youngster went in for a catch that Ponting called for. Even though he caught it, the ball ended up a few feet underground such was Ponting's frustration.

Funny people calling for Smith to be stripped of captaincy as is clueless.

Would be a silly to give it to Dave

I guess. Personally I don’t agree would rather a spinner that can bowl sides out rather than hoping a sort of better than part time spinner doesn’t get smacked just because they can bat/field well.

Ahmed has 38 wickets @ 34 from his 30 List A games. Agar has 36 @ 31 from 28. Even Zampa has 83 @ 33 from 59 matches.

I think fans and CA get carried away with the idea of leg spin bowlers being wicket takers. Ahmed is nothing special, nor is Zampa, nor is Mason Crane and nor are plenty of other ordinary leg spin bowlers. Rashid Khan (the 19 year old who looks 45) is pretty good, he has 71 wickets @ 15 from his 33 matches, most of which are ODIs, admittedly against mainly Associate nations. But he's been excellent for the Strikers in the BBL.

Picking a leg spinner is like having a LH/RH combo opening the batting. It's nice to have, but you don't break up Langer & Hayden just to get Bancroft in because he is right handed.

From what I remember, Haddin and Watson opened in 2011. Steve Smith was in the team too.
