You saw Tron? Wow.

Has anyone else seen Tron?

Yes, it is available on DVD. It was ahead of its time in 1982. 'Computer dimension' was a pre-virtual reality concept. Looking forward to the sequel Tron Legacy, due out end of this year, in 3D as well. Probably deserves its own thread, as this one is about Avatar.

Thought it was boring. Both the gf and myself fell asleep at different stages of it.

You got bored at the movies with your gf, and decided that sleeping was the best alternative?

Looks like it's heading for the Best Picture Oscar. Ridiculous really, and I actually liked the movie. But the Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Up in the Air and even Up and the Road were better overall movies IMO.

I am holding out hope that the Golden Globe was given to him so that he won't have to win the Oscar, I know that's not how it works but that's my feeling. It is simply not worthy of a 'Best Picture title. Avatar should do well in the technical departments at the Oscars though.

Saw 3D version last night. Even though the storyline reminded me of Dances with the Wolves (wounded soldier, falls in love with natives and girl, defends against his own etc. etc.) the awesome animation alone makes it worth the admission.

Avatar is now up to 1.62 billion...

As of Monday, "Avatar" had grossed $1.12 billion internationally and $505 million domestically. Within the next week, it will surpass the $1.24 billion that "Titanic," Cameron's last picture and still the most successful of all time worldwide, collected overseas. Shortly thereafter, it should pass the 1997-98 film's domestic total of $600.8 million.

Doubt it'll win Best Picture at the Oscars - the only thing the academy hates more than science fiction is comedy.
Lets hope not. Looking back over previous GG Best Drama winners, few have gone on to win the Oscar. I know it doesn't matter, but people remember this kind of thing and Avatar should be remembered as the next step in film technology, not the best movie of 2009.

I recently watched Avatar last week and thought the world of it. Now ever since i have seen it, the only thing on my mind is AVATAR. I love absolutely everything about. I have been doing non stop googleing on the movie, wanting to find out every little detail about it. I even tried searching for a program to make an avatar of me. Even joined a group on Facebook : "I saw the movie Avatar and now real life sucks". I have looked up the NA'VI language and are starting to pick up on some words.

I Have now seen Avatar twice at the movie and are still very keen on seeing that great place of Pandora again.

Through my research on the topic, i have found these future realistic Itags, that i think are very advanced and cant wait to purchase them. http://www.avataritag.com/#/toys/

Two things I found amusing/interesting

First the interesting

from http://news.mongabay...nce_avatar.html

The real Avatar story: indigenous people fight to save their forest homes from corporate exploitation..... In James Cameron's newest film Avatar an alien tribe on a distant planet fights to save their forest home from human invaders bent on mining the planet. The mining company has brought in ex-marines for 'security' and will stop at nothing, not even genocide, to secure profits for its shareholders. While Cameron's film takes place on a planet sporting six-legged rhinos and massive flying lizards, the struggle between corporations and indigenous people is hardly science fiction.

For decades real indigenous tribes around the world have faced off with corporations—mining, logging, oil and gas—determined to exploit their land. These corporations, much like the company in the film, usually have support from the government and access to 'security forces', sometimes in the form of ex-military or state police. Yet unlike the film, in which the indigenous group triumphs over the corporate and military invaders, the real-life stories of indigenous tribes rarely end justly: from Peru to Malaysia to Ecuador their struggles continue.

Then the amusing:

That is a good point.
So Pocahontas ripped off real-life first :thumbsu:

I saw another one of those movie vs movie notes for Star Wars vs Harry Potter which was also well done I thought....

Not the first time a movie has had a similar plot to an older movie...

Blair Witch was like Cannibal Holocaust
The Sixth Sense was like Carnival of Souls (the part that made Sixth Sense so famous)
Spider-man 2 was like Spider-man :p
Every zombie movie is like Romero's movies, which in turn probably ripped off something else before that.
For that matter, with most horror movies there's probably a total of 5 plots that are just recycled. Same probably goes for Romance movies too.
