I'm sure this will be a hot topic of conversation all week.

Assuming they line up in the forward line as follows:

Charlie Gardiner (or Other) / Riewoldt / Schneider
Milne / Kosi / Gehrig

Then at this stage I'm thinking:
Gardiner (or Other): Bower
Riewoldt: Waite
Schneider: Scotland / Grigg
Milne: Thornton
Kosi: Setanta
Gehrig: Jamison

Still toying up swaping Thornton and Jamison. Obviously Gehrig will be too strong for both of them. Thornton seems to do a good job on a smaller quick forward, but so can Jamison.

This is just my opinion at the moment and I am happy to hear sensible debate on it. Just don't tell me stupid stuff like put Eddy on Milne. And its also based on probable Carlton selection so I don't want to hear about how you don't like Grigg or don't like Bower.

Gardiner: Jamison
Riewoldt: Waite - a proven matchup
Schneider: Scotland - may be a problem, scotland is better on rebound than defending as such
Milne: Bower - he can play small
Kosi: Setanta - need a gorilla for a gorilla
Gehrig: Thornton - Setanta doesn't seem to work on him, Thornton has enough size on him

I'd preffer to play Jamison at full back but he doesn't have enough size to play kosi. He may get a gig on Gehrig though.

We will definitely concede 100+ points here. Hopefully our forwards are switched on...

Put Gibbs on Milne! ;)

The Waite-Riewoldt matchup is a really good one, and can go either way... but I have a lot of faith in Waite. Has the pace, agility and leap to go with him all night... and if the mids can take the pressure off the defence then he will do OK. The matchup I'm really worried about though is Gehrig - he always kills us. Sentanta was outfoxed by him last time they played on each other... I really hope this time he can do a better job. Since then he's put quite a few games behind him, so I am assuming he will be better off this time round.

To put Jamison on Gehrig sounds too risky to me... Gehrig will trouble us more than Richo, and has for god knows how many times previously. Jamison should be played on someone lighter... Gehrig will monster him and most likely kick 5+.

Thornton was outmuscled in the last few times they played on each other. There's no way he has the size to match Gehrig 1v1. O'hAlpin may be our best option for him because he has the bulk.

One of Armfield or Pfeiffer in for Grigg. Both are more capable ATM of shutting down Milne/Schnieder.

Jamison on Gehrig. Setanta IMO will be better suited to Kosi, who is taller than Gehrig and his height and super strong arms might prove too much for Jamison.

Waite on Reiwoldt. Has the ability to match him on the lead - better than Setanta in that regard and has done the job on Riewoldt well in the past.

Thornton, put him on Gardiner and give him the license to run like he did against the Tiges, and help out the other three with their big assignments, especially against Gehrig and Kosi who will start closer to goal and use their bulk rather than be a lead up target like Riewoldt. If one of the other defenders is being beaten, Thornton's capable of doing the job.

Bu5t that's just the thing isn't it? Setanta ha slost a lot of strenght/weight so it could be a risk to play him on Gehrig. Also just seems to concede a lot of goals to Gehrig

Hopefully the blues will play better this week. They were Ok against Richmond for 3 quarters. I think St KIldas forward line will kick a big score against Carlton but maybe we can keep with them and create a close game. St Kilda have always played well against us especially Gehrig. Hopefully he doesnt play and we have a great match. :thumbsu:

Carrazzo on Milne is an option, especially if Bentick plays, he can take Carrazzo's spot in the midfield rotation.

Gehrig isn't fit/didn't play last night/isn't a shoe-in to play against us, so even if he does, I'm not expecting too much from the G-Train. I'd play Jamison on him.

Setanta to play on Kosi, if it's Jamison or Thornton, they'll just kick it up in the air, and he'll out mark someone, if someone like Waite zones off to help out, then Reevolt is free and they'll kick it to him.

Thornton to play on Charlie Gardiner (if he starts in the forward line), best match-up for Thorton, on their least likely forward, Thornton could hurt the Saints by going forward, or alternatively, not respecting Gardiner could be a downfall.

Gehrig/Carlos
Riewoldt/Waite
Kosi/Jamison
Gardiner/Thornton
Milne/Bower
Schneider/Scotland

I'd let Jackson run with Harvey, and see if Carrazzo can do a negating type roll in Dal Santo.

HBF, I almost agree with you and wouldn't be surprised if they go this way. Carlos has played on Gehrig before (who could forget when they almost headbutted), but don't you think Jamo just gives too much height away to Kosi and its therefore too dangerous?

Look he probably does, but my only other option would be to put Thornton on him, and Waite and Carlos really need to go with Riewoldt and Gehrig respectively. I really though Jamo did a reasonable job on Richo, and Kosi certainly isn't as big, and wouldn't be any more athletic than Richo either.

We'd have to stop the amount of good ball coming into their forward line, which means pressure through the midfield, and i'm hoping thay both Judd and Stevens will be better for the run on Thursday night.

You know I respect you HBF, and take notice of everything you say, and while Jamison certainly wasn't 'pantsed' like some are saying, he played okay on Richo, but, Kosi is far more athletic than Richo, Kosi isn't as strong, but his height would cause Jamo all sorts of problems.

How effective do you expect Gehrig to be, if he even plays? He'd be way underdone, and wont have a big impact on the game, Jamison can easily go with Gehrig, Setanta, height/athleticism/strengh matches up perfectly on Kosi and of course, Waite has to go with Riewoldt, also, not sure about Scotland on Schneider, as much as it pains me to say this, have a feeling that Hoops will get that role.

Waite to play up forward. I'm not letting those flooding bastards triple-team Fev. They move the ball slower than anyone so let's back our strength, which is the midfield, and give ourselves some decent targets for a change.

As for the backline:
Jamison - on Kosi
Thornton - on Reiwoldt
Setanta - on Gehrig

I know they're outsized, so we have to make midfield pressure the key. If they can't deliver the ball properly to their forwards, then our smaller back line should have no trouble in rebounding the lose ball.

I would think that Thornton would play as a lose man in the backline and plug the hole... if not him then someone like a Cloke. Waite will play back, he will play on Reiwoldt and he will beat Reiwoldt as he has done the last couple of times. There is no need to rush him into the forward line just yet. I know the canyon at CHF was huge but at the end of the day Waite has beaten Reiwoldt hands down the last couple of times.

Generally backlines are things you can fix with a big man (who knows what he is doing) plugging the hole. It wont solve everything but will at least stem the flow a little. Our major problem is going to be our forward line. Where are the goals going to come from?

We need to get Armfield and Pfieffer into the side. Their 2nd and 3rd efforts along with their forward line pressure is what we need. Watching the Hawthorn game today Rioli and Stokes were amazing... Rioli won out in a 3 on 1 situation twice... we need to keep the ball in there because it isn't going to come in there much on Saturday night!
