Have you been the recipient of bad parenting? Please share some examples.

1. When i was 4 my dad tried to set fire to me with a cigarette lighter. Fortunately my pyjamas were fire resistant.
2. Mum attacked me with a knife and threatened to castrate me at the age of 15 because I didn't smile when we had guests over.
3. When i was 5 my dad slapped me hard across the face for no reason at all, causing some relatives to leave and never return, ever. It was my birthday party and Melbourne Cup day.

One Christmas my parents once got me an ipad when I specifically asked for an ipad mini.

My mum chased my brother and I around the outside of the house 7 times with a wooden spoon after she caught us chasing a goat with the same weapon in the paddock next to our house. Apparently we needed to know how the goat felt.

You can't choose your parents. My parents were disgustingly ordinary, apart from my father's catholic religious bigotry. None of this shit entered into my relationship with my son (deliberately). He seems well-adjusted, has lots of splendid friends and has an almost frightening determination to be his own person. He is already a better being than I've ever been. I like to think I have had some influence on this. Probably unfounded that.

I hope you're joking.

Worst thing my parents ever did was get me hooked on pot.

It's interesting how religious beliefs etc. can influence children, and then children's children. My old man was brought up as a very strict Catholic, and we were raised the same initially (I was a f*cking altar boy ffs), until I turned 13 or 14 and realised what a load of bullsh*t it was. In the end my reasons for not wanting to be that strict religiously resulted in my parents changing their beliefs in a similar fashion throughout the course of my teenage years. Now I can openly discuss it all with my dad, and he is baffled that he was so strictly Catholic his entire life until less than a decade ago. Strange.

Nope. I'm still a little bit wary of fire, and I wonder if it was because my dad was chasing me around the house with that cigarette lighter of his. Also the knife incident is kinda typical of my mum, she got angry when I didn't behave in the expected manner. And the face slap incident probably makes my top 3 because of the timing of it.

I'm honestly not even sure how to respond to this. Though I could say the same thing to you.

Glad to have embarrassed you.:) I meant what I said. Your loquacity is part of the catholic upbringing. So much to detest, so much is hateful. But, so much in their educational methods stand you apart from the herd. I can always tell a person who has been educated by catholics, by the conversation we have. They are never lost for a word, have confidence in their presentation, and understand the intricacies of language and emphasis. It's a double-edged thing, that sort of education. In an age where an ability to confidently present is a rarity, we have a head start.

Irish-Catholic background here. The effect has only been so-so, in my experience. Being well-read as a young 'un is more vital to your arsenal if you expect to be a good writer. Exposure to a wide vocabulary does wonders, especially if you were a curious kid who looked up every word they didn't know in a dictionary.

Best yet reading is , like, TOTALLY non-denominational:thumbsu:

They eventually lose control of what you read, but not how you approach it.

Yeah I had never considered that my reading/writing/speaking ability was the result of my Catholic upbringing. I always assumed it was simply because my old man has a genuine love of literature and the written word, and that this was passed on to me from a very young age. Interesting topic though.
