"Pushed"? Fitzroy voluntarily wanted to go to Canberra for the 1996 season (playing between 4 and 7 home games there) and had a deal organised. It was knocked back by the AFL commission.

Fitzroy was a good fit for Canberra and i believed it could have worked, but fast forward to today and besides poker machine money which basically allows the Canberra Raiders to compete i am not sure how a sporting team in Canberra could raise 30 million plus every year.

Of course between that year and today there cold have been a myriad of things they could have got involved in to raise funds and future proof themselves but Canberra is a public service town with little private money.

i would have thought that a Canberra AFL team would average somewhere between 15/20 k crowd average, but that would have meant Manuka was upgraded earlier or Bruce Stadium not retanguaralised. ( not even sure that is a word) but you get what i mean.

I would of thought crowds from 10-15000 at home or similar to what the raiders get with a decent following in Melbourne. Could be way off, I guess we'll never know

It is what they get now to a team with no history, no existing support base like a Melbourne team would have in Canberra and everyone knows that in essence it is not really a Canberra team.

GWS is but a vehicle for people to see some AFL football, although for kids growing up that may be very different, they may actually barrack for them.

A Canberra AFL team would drag IMO between 15/20k

I've been looking for this!

I've added in some numbers here. Namely each states % of the total population.

You can see that Vic/SA/NT produce far more draft kids per percentage of the total population than the others

Vic 42% (25% Aus Population)
SA 14% (7.25% Aus Population)
WA 11.4% (11.19% Aus Population)
NSW/ACT 9.8% (32.61% Aus Population)
QLD 9.8% (20.28% Aus Population)
Tas 3.6% (2.2% Aus Population)
NT 2.7% (1% Aus Population)

NSW/QLD combined are 52% of the total population. Yet produced < 20% of the drafted kids.

I know people have issues with the academies. But that's a serious issue that needs to be resolved.

And please no-one claim that the AFL should run them.
They tried and failed.

I'm interested if anyone has a plan on how to increase the number of kids coming out of NSW/QLD without the academies.

It can only be the acadamies, and they will ensure the long term future for the Lions, Suns and Giants.

TBH i am surprised that WA only produces 11%, it seems to produce plenty of rookies who go on and plenty of mature age recruits, i think the fact they are over here and away from constantly prying eyes is a detriment, also if a Vic player is considered the equal of a WA player, then a Vic team ( 10 teams) will pick a Vic kid every time.

I don't think we will ever get to the point where all states produce players relative to population and i am not sure we want that, what i will say is if a player like Marcus Adams can come over from the West and i saw him play 10 games or so for West Perth last year and play such a big role for Footscray this year then Vic players are over rated and WA players underrated

You're talking about figures from 1 draft. 8 WA kids picked up in the main draft is pretty low compared to other years.

This is part of the inherent bias in the footy system. Its also a reason for WA3.

I would agree with that, you could guarantee a increase in WA players with a 3rd team, just as we have seen a incredible increase in NSW players being identified by the academies, it is called self interest.

And what we are about to see in QLD.

I am not convinced that the WA boys are any worse than the NSW boys picked up, ( not all but most) but what the GWS, Swans academy has done is get them up to speed like the VIC TAC cup has been doing for many years, the colts in the WAFL is not up to TAC standards, but the funding is not there either.

Didn't see this....

I think you need to factor in support not just raw population. If only 10% of kids in QLD play AFL, then producing 9.8% of players is massive...If it's 50%, it's poor. (I'd suggest it's closer to the former)

Tell me, when did the AFL try and fail to run academies?

Not justifying it along the Vic/NSW border, but it is a very difficult line to draw and judge, perhaps when the 3rd Sydney team enters they will split it again :);)

It is more easily defined by the Murrumbidgee, but even above the Murrumbidgee there are very traditional AF towns where RL does not exist.

Although 20 minutes or so South of Batemans Bay, Moruya was a dyed in the wool RL town, being a bit inland it got missed as AF worked up the coast, bit like Bega, but just in the last couple of years both towns now have juniors and Bega also a couple of senior teams.

North QLD areas have over recent years produced a fair amount of AFL-level players (Big Dix for example). The AFL is doing a lot of work in areas like Cairns and Mackay so it's not that surprising to see players coming from there.

Darling Downs is not Nth Qld, it is inland rural QLD far from the growth areas up and down the coast

But i do appreciate your point.
