I play bass. Good fun, and a great hobby....sadly nowhere near as good as I'd like to be though.

I play a pathetic Legend

Good basslines = Money, Heartbreaker, Badge.

Jack Bruce is the sexiest of the lot.;)
Chris Noveselic always managed a solid bassline as well, and as a result has my respect.

another bass player here
i play a crappy ashton, been playing on-and-off for a few years now, i always preferred playing guitar but i just joined band a few months ago as a bass player and have improved massively now that i'm taking seriously.
i love busting out funky basslines between songs ie "around the world" by daft punk or "dance wiv me" by dizzee rascal.
looking at buying an upright bass in december; dayum they're expensive though...

I play guitar and bass, but prefer the bass.

I help out teaching kids at my school, and play for the school Big Band. We do a Stevie Wonder medley which has a great bass line and is fun to play :thumbsu:

Only reason i dont have one:(

Good to see a few more bassists on bigfooty.

Add me to the list. :thumbsu:

Although I have get my arse into line. Been way too slack with it for way too long....

And here's the bass I have at the moment - an Ibanez

Good sound, does the job nicely :thumbsu:

If I was to get another bass, it would be something like this:

The bass is the most important part of a band imo. How often do you hear a song today with a boring 1 note bass line. Hardly any bands play cool bass lines, so I don't even bother with them. Without exciting bass ideas the music is just not good enough imo. We should be listening to rock music with imaginative bass lines. Otherwise the song just sounds amatuer. Professional musicians + Amatuer composers=Amatuer music

Yeah, i play bass as well as everything else lol, (guitar being my main instrument), i find bass is incredibly important.

My favourite bass player would have to be Chris Wolfenstholme (from muse ;):p). I just love the incredible use of basslines in their songs- the bass line often carries lots of the melody, or drives the actual song heavily. For reference: 'Hyper Music' or 'Plug in Baby'

Geddy Lee - great nic mate ;)

I also chucked my big old 1980 Washburn in AsianWithAFro's thread. I'm after a nice Fender Jazz sometime next year, though.

I've been playing about a year and can create stuff interesting enough for the other guys I jam with to compliment, they've all been in bands for 20 years.

Atm, I'm right into Geezer & "re-discovering Sabbath" just wading through an absolute goldmine. Been through my JPJ / LZ phase. Then had great fun learning from bands like The Meters, etc. Awesome stuff!

The dude above who mentioned muse, yeah they have some pumping basslines.

I do not play bass but my wife played it in a band at uni, so I feel quailified to comment !

John Entwistle's bass line in My Generation is one of the great riffs of any sort from the sixties.

My favourite bass player is Martyn P Casey from The Bad Seeds. I love his "muscular" style. It is so important to their sound.

Was going to comment on your Ibanez volcboy, just curious how does it sound unplugged?

While on looks, I like the look of some of those neck through body basses:D:

nice thread...us bass players have gotta stick together...no one notices the bass player until he stops playing...played for nearly 20 yrs now, started with Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Billy Sheehan, Flea, Muzz Skillings - Jaco, Doug Wimbish and Justin Chancellor blow me away these days. My main bass is a Fender J bass, Marcus Miller model, weighs a ton. Anyone heard of a Melb. band PreShrunk, 3 piece, 2 basses and drummer - released a couple of e.p's and album? Sadly now defunkt.

The Ibanez is pretty quiet when unplugged - the open body is more for looks than anything else :)

It is a very solid and heavy bass with good quality pickups though.

BTW, my favorite bass players are;

Les Claypool of Primus - A genius. I was lucky enough to see them play live a couple of times.

Justin Chancellor of Tool - Melodic player, uses chords and interesting riffs.

Carl Young of Spearhead & Juan D Nelson of the Innocent Criminals (Ben Harper) - I love those funky bass players.

Paul McCartney - Was a great bass player in the Beatles days, especially on tracks like Taxman.

Charlie Hunter - Jazz player who also played with the Disposable Heroes of Hiphopcracy. Plays a custom guitar/bass which has three bass strings and five guitar strings (below), playing both bass and guitar parts at once. I've seen him play live a couple of times and still don't know how he does it.

i play bass/guitar/keys in my band, but i think im most at home on the bass.

in terms of pop/rock music today that has good basslines, i dont think you can go past kings of leon - their bass player (cant remember which followill he is) comes up with some great lines.

Seen Claypool live? you bastard.

And im a huge fan of Justin from tool, his riffs are so odd, but damn they are good

count me in.

I've had an ibanez soundgear for a looong time - great neck for speedy riffs (well it was used to play death metal back in the day...!)

love the tone of the musicman though - a beautiful fat sound for groovier/funkier stuff

Thats not bad, im going to torrent some crap and see if i further like,

Anyways, one of my fave bass players would be Jessie Keeler, the bloke off Death from above 1979, now they were a band, very catchy bass riffs.

I recommend fellow bass nuts to somehow, if you haven't already, acquire John Entwistle playing with The Who live. He was a pretty good bass player in the studio, but was something else on stage. This solo in 5:15 is a small taste of this guy's skills.
