Great call. One of my earliest gigs was playing on a bill with X amongst other great bands - as a young, slightly awestruck bassist, it made my day when Rilen asked if he could use my quad box to set up a monster rig which I also got to use.

I'd add as my influences:

John Entwhistle - The Who
Dee Dee Ramone - The Ramones (showed me I could play bass)
Warwick Gilbert - Radio Birdman
James Darroch - The Celibate Rifles
Bill Gibson - The Eastern Dark
Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Joe Bouchard - Blue Oyster Cult
Tim Hemmensley - Powder Monkeys

Good list. I'll add a couple (I tinker with bass, but I'm a much better guitarist):

Jack Bruce - Cream
John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin

Great thread!

I have been playing bass for over 20 years. Played with original metal bands in Melb a lot of that time. Had a stint in a Sabbath/Ozzy tribute band - great songs and a great bunch of blokes. I have a Gibson Les Paul 5 string and a custom built 5 string (Ethereal guitars - Victorian luthier - check him out!). The custom is easily the best bass I have ever played.

I played with a pick for years then threw it away and never looked back - so much more feel and string control without it. I just had to get the speed up to play quick metal stuff - so practise and more practise. I dont play as much as I would like these days.

Props to volcboy! Good to see you stuck at it mate!

Fav bass players - Cliff Burton, Geezer, Steve Digeorgio.

I've been (inactively) looking for a good one. I have a 30+ yo Washburn & 5 string Mex Fender Jazz that could really do with some bass specific love & expertise. I was going to go through The Bass Centre ... but ... haven't yet.

Hmmm, I love the attack & 'clunk' of the pick when digging in for chorus or belting out the groove under a solo. Slower stuff, I do like the tone of fingers, but I need to really work more on the control. I've been playing on/off for 3 years.

Give ethereal a go for sure. Jon does what he does for a love of music and instruments. I have the gibson heading
in for a well deserved "birthday" very soon with him.

Fingers can allow more variation than a pick on the strings to emphasise light and heavy so you can still hit the chorus hard.
