I would rather lose the Grand Final.... The feeling of just being in a grand final and the build up is awesome. Plus the experience for out youngsters and drive to taste it again is invaluable!!!

Positives for losing the prelim
- Week get to start the preseaon next year a week earlier and hence will be fitter for the year.
- We get a higher draft pick in each round.

Positives for getting the granny and losing
- More finals experience for the young kids
- More money for the club
- Confirms that we are among the best few teams in the comp with even such a young list.

I am leaning towards the latter.

While the true answer is obvious, it's still an interesting question.
If it were to be a loss like '03, I would rather we didn't even make it.
'02 was a great game. It gave us a lot of confidence, especially considering no one really gave us a chance. But it also set back Neon Leon's career by a few years.

A loss is always heart-breaking, but I don't think anything that would realistically happen could squash the spirit that our boys have and are continuing to build.
We have a real chance of being the _best_ team in the comp in the next few years.
We haven't been able to say that we have the best team in a LONG time.

This is why I'm not too worried about the outcome. Sure I want us to win. I was jumping around like a mental case on Saturday. But the Saints are the ones with the real pressure on them. Their window is WIDE OPEN right now. Soon, it will start to get narrower. The gap will be harder for them to sqeeze through.
They are in the belly of the couldron right now. Their supporters will be looking for blood if the don't go all the way. Almost all of their players are playing at their peak this year and the stars don't line up like that very often.

For us, this is just the beginning, make no mistake we will be contending for a while yet.

Option A)

As the great Wayne Gretzky said, "One hundred percent of the shots you don't take, don't go in."

Fear of failure is the number one cause of it.

A - the team is young enough for it not to be disaster - they are not yet at their prime. It would be good to get a prelim into our young list. I could take a loss of under 30 points.

If it's a flogging in the GF then B - reload with hopes and dreams intact. I don't want them scarred for life

I'm in two minds.

On one hand I'd rather not be embarrassed but getting out bums kicked on Grandfinal day, if wirse came to worse. Losing a close Granny would be just as tough on us. Two granny losses in my lifetime is enough.... hahaha.

On the other hand, I want us to make it there so badly. Just the lead up to the big day & that feeling.... Just having that hope that we could win.

However, if we win this week.... we better win the GF! I'll be most disappointed if we don't.

I just want to WIN!!

"You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take."

Sorry for the intrusion.
I captained my team to a prelim win against a team that beat us by 80 points two weeks earlier. Lost the grand final on saturday by 98 points. While i still feel like ive been kicked in the nuts, I'd go back and do it all again in a heart beat.

Wow how bad is this I agree with the Geelong supporter (Bakes) you get there if you can. I've been following the Pies for over 40 years (so don't let me hear people say "I couldn't stand another losing GF"), how many losing GFs have I seen? I have also played in 7 GFs 1 draw 6 losses but at least I'm not a quitter, you win every game that you can and a win over Geelong will stand us in good stead for the future as well. BTW I've been in a side that got flogged all season and the alternative of playing in a losing GF beats the hell out of that. Oh and you all think 03 was bad you should have been around for 1980 and Richmond of all sides.

I've watched us lose 2 Grand Finals, and lose a Prelim.

Lock in B Eddie.

If we're not going to win the GF, then don't make it. I can't handle another loss in a Grand Final. It hurts WAY too much.

edit: Got my options mixed up.

Personally, I'd rather make it when we KNOW we're ready to win it.

I SO hope I'm wrong, but we're not ready. When I see Toovey in that side, when I see O'Bree, Lockyer, Johnson. I just know we're not ready.

When you look at Geelong and St.Kilda, not only do you see more stars than us, you DON'T see players like those that I listed. Ditto for Hawthorn.

Let's not get sidetracked here shall we?

The OP was asking for an opinion on the two worst outcomes. That's all.

Fair to say we all want a flag and you need to risk losing one in order to win, but don't hang shit on people who have had their hearts broken by GF failure.

I have seen us play 8 GF's and win one.

I can safely say that as a kid watching the Pies miss out in 77, 79, 80 & 81 was f**king hard to take and has certainly made me very wary.

Given the choice betwen losing this week or next, I would definitely take this week. Finishing 2nd is shit.

Ive seen us lose GFs, Finals, home and away games everything

Being afraid to play a Grand final because you may lose is weak (yes it is just my opinion) but you wont get anyway if you are afraid of what might go wrong. How about you look at what go right? confidence breeds confidence, confidence brings success.

Yeah if we lose it will burn, but if we win it will be one of the greatest days ever.

Basically Dont fear Failure, embrace it fear of anything will be what will ultimately make you fall short. You think at half time saturday night the players said give up now because if we lose we wont need to play geelong or st.kilda again? of course they didnt

I don't think you ever know you are ready to win it.

The only way to know you can win it is to get to it.
If you are not in it you will never know.
Once you are in it you know absolutely you can win it.

You never know you will win it.

Thats it

If you dont make it how do you know you could not have won? preseason 07 i would have said we probably couldnt have won the GF by seasons end if we beat geelong (30 more seconds) we would have been premiers

Saturday night, who knew toovey or sidebottom or goldsack would step up like they did?

Make the GF if you lose burn for months and come back stronger, win it will be awesome. If you dont do things due to fear you will lead a very very sad life

All true, but like I said, for me personally, it just hurt too much.

I'll be happy to make a granny (even with the risk of losing) when I think we're good enough to win one. I just don't think we are yet. That's all.

I mean, even our coach isn't confident we'll GET there, so how can we be confident we'll win.

Starting those horse shit mind games, to me, doesn't instill much confidence in Mick's belief we can beat Geelong on our own terms. Taking stabs like that is generally a trademark of cowards or people who know they stand no chance.
