Beating the zone

It seems Malthouse has finally figured out how to beat the zone. Did anybody notice on the weekend that whenever a player took a mark and WC had zoned forward of the play?

1. Player takes a mark and has nothing on up the line.

2. Waits for the umpire to call play on.

3. Closest player in vicinity to man on mark immediately runs forwards and blocks.

4. Player with ball runs past the man on the mark gains that extra 15 to 20 metres before kicking over the zone.

Simple but effective.

fair point...you are right that players were onto this.

However it has to be noted that West Coast were not on the ball. Too many times we were able to easily sheppherd and the player could run straight through. Teams would con onto this very quickly.

I mean, Swan was able to have a chat to Davis and pretty much plan out everything they wanted to do. A West Coast player surely should've gone and manned up Davis.

I've got to be fair to MM, i noticed this numerous times and it seemed to work.

However the real test will come against a team like Hawthorn who can actually use the zone to effect (WC were terrible at it)

Mate, that's been our gameplan for the past 10 years, it hasn't changed since malthouse has been in charge. We weren't "hemmed" in on the boundry, it our gameplan to play on the wide on the wings.

Fumanchu while I don't think the Eagles will be playing finals this year they have beaten the Bulldogs and Port (both considered top 4 material) while just going down in away games to Brisbane and Sydney (both considered fringe top 8 material).

That's not the worst form - and as always, it's never easy to win at Subiaco, especially with 4 of your top 10 players missing.

With all due respect, the game the other night was of such a poor standard from both sides, it truly was the definition of the 'battle of mediocrity'.

WC may have beaten a few 'contenders' here in perth, but what they showed the other night, really was not at the same standard that they beat those other teams with.

It was a very poor game and notwithstanding the missing players w had out, the next tier of players in Cook and co really are not up to scratch and it was donw to the concerted efforts of half a doxen or so of our players that we dominated. And in saying that we dominated, we still didnt thrash them.

It's amazing how ineffective a zone defence can be if your consistantly turning the ball over. WC zone was in effective because the just kept givign the ball back to us and not giving themself the time they needed to set up

The go down the wings and then center at CHF, sort of like us when we have a real CHF to center too

But hey the zone is all the rage and the wings is only for shit sides
