Just a couple of notes to cheer up our faithful (reading this board doesn't necessarily bring a smile to your face...unless its the scott mclaren thread)

- Josh Gibson is sprinting, this morning, was running 100 metre sprints, with absolutely no discomfort. Given his natural fitness, expect him back very very soon (unless they are cautious). Remember he was injured Rd 3 which was 11 April. Given that he is sprinting 5 weeks after hamstring tendon surgey is great.

- Simon Taylor is back at training, and training with the main group

- Luke Lowden is back training with the Hawks listed players who are representing box hill, i.e dowler, shoey etc. Lowden is one tall fella, he is no longer 'stix', i see him coming back ahead of bailey, can he put pressure on skipper for the no.2 spot?

- Travis tuck back for box hill next week (after the bye). All the best Trav!

Don't hold your breath on dowler and shoey playing this week (even though they should).

That's all great news, and we need plenty of it at the minute, thanks for the update.

On a not so positive note, I spoke to a good friend of mine today and he is he informs me that Dowler is less than happy and wants to jump ship at years end:(

I won't name his source but it is as close as it can comes without being Beau. He is out of contract end of year.

He has been looked at by some notable clubs over the last 3 months.

It really mystifies me why they don't give him a real chance as a forward or on a wing. He showed last year when he got some call ups that he could add to the team. I still recall R6 v Blues he played a ripper of a game, one of the reasons we ended up winning.

Just hoping that they bring him in and give him some game time, who knows it could well change his mind.

He can familiarise himself with his new teammates this week! :thumbsu:

We'll give you a third rounder.

Throw in your sauce head ruckman and it's a deal.

If we can get over the Blues this week, we will be a good chance to get a roll on with Gibson and taylor on the horizon.

If you could take anything away from the heartbreak of 2009, it was the emergence of Beau Dowler in the forward line in the last few matches of the season.

Beau had a full pre-season until he rolled his ankle in the warm up of the first Nab Cup match. Typically nothing (or little) was said of the HFC about his injury and we were left assuming that it was serious and he was struggling for match fitness.

... Thats what we were lead to believe until i came across this;

When he came to the club he had uncompromising standards. He selected in Viney and Hardwick as two men who shared those values and were hard men, not just as footballers, but as men of high standing.

The appointment of recent assistant coaches has left a lot to be desired. Were these appointments the function of Clarkson or someone else. I can't believe they were forced upon him.

I believe there has been a drop in standards at Hawthorn since the grand final in 08.

The work at training is often sloppy and only 3/4 paced. There is an obvious need to change the game plan and our systems for moving the ball. Maybe it does not need to be radical changes but there is an obvious need to meet the oppositions approach to the way we play. I don't think Clarko has accepted this need. He has an unshakeable belief in the game plan.

There are attitudes amongst the assistant coaches in respect to certain players which is holding those players back. There is one player who is a forward but is playing back at BHH whom one of the assistant coaches has no or little respect for and bags him at every opportunity.

Now if this is accurate (and it is) then it falls to Clarkson to step in and do something about it. Agree with the assistant coach and move the player on, or disagree and develop the player to the best advantage for the club. But do something, not let matters drift.

That is the challenge as I see it for Clarkson and how he handles it over the rest of this season will determine whether he is a career coach or not. More of the same is simply not acceptable to me.

That's all great news, and we need plenty of it at the minute, thanks for the update.

What is going on?

The thing that makes me the most annoyed is the fact that we have desperately needed talls in the side. Many called for Lilse to play who simply wasn't ready.

We had a seasoned player on the sidelines and you chose not to play him. No wonder we are sitting at 2 wins 6 losses.

Our managment of Beau has to be questioned. Can see him going to another club and kickign a fair few goals.

Deplorable. Who would the assistant coach be? Barker?

I would have thought it was Simpson, given that he is new. Barker is the forwards coach so you would assume he would want Dowler in the side.

I remember speaking to a Hawthorn player (ex now) before a football game last year at Etihad (Round 3 North Melbourne).

He rated Dowler very high, and said a few people didn't like him at the club. Dind't say who. It may be inappropriate to the name the player who said this, but I will if the mods really want me to.

I think Simpson wouldn't be concerned with forwards to much, as his job is the midfield. I've heard Rick McGowan has a bit of an ego at the club(that could just be a rumour, so until confirmed im not going to 100% commit to that), and Barker Im not sure, but he is forwards coach, if he had a strong enough input to get Beau in the team I would think he would be given at least ONE chance in a team thats kicked under 100 in 7 of 8 occasions.

I am considering writing a letter to Jeff, not having a go at Jeff, but at certain things that are happening. We are fastly becoming a rabble and its not acceptable for a team with a top 4 'best 22'.

Chris Pelchen is a list strategist, and his role should only go as far as managing the salary cap, and player types on our list.

As far as choosing players at the draft table (Ellis, Dowler, Thorp, Morton) he has a fail next to his name. It should come under scrutiny. Look how light on our talls are due, not to managment, just the players chosen. If Beau and Mitch were good talls and playing good football we would have a good amount of stocks.

Coupled with Croad/Boyle going early, which should be replaced in 2010 draft. However we need to replace Thorp, and now maybe Dowler. Thats 4 talls that need replacing. We have maybe Lisle as one. We got Schoenmakers as a Dawson replacement.

There are politics within the club. Thats my assumption and Im sticking by it. The group is divided. This may end Dowlers chance at our club.

This is a joke HFC. They have made an enjoyable time in watching Hawthorn play just feel like a choir more so than a hobby. Its deplorable:mad:

If Dowler is telling people he wants to leave at the end of the year I'm happy for him to stay in the reserves.

Sounds like he aint got no say. I honestly hope he comes good and sticks it up their arses.

Give him a game, he cant be any worse then some other statues playing in the side at the moment. Who knows, he might actually kick us some goals and spark a few others...

As others have said, if he's going to be traded at year's end he MUST be given a fair chance to prove himself in the seniors in the second half of the season before they make the call!

I reckon he should be played in the forwardline where he's played his best football. Leave him at FF and allow Roughead to gain confidence at CHB, shoring up our woeful defense.
Even if Clarkson is hell bent on him playing in the backline as he seems to be, I'd still rather see him down there than Murphy, or on the ground instead of Stokes.

Dowler is a much better prospect than Morton, who has been given far more chances by the selectors - why is this the case? That's why we're all so mystified..

shuey getting games ahead of a fit dowler would not help his confidence

Danny J and others, thanks for acknowledging the need for sources. However, the same mailman evidently comes to the mod cave. Carry on.

Re: Some more positive news

What clubs are interested Hardcore???
What does everyone think we would get in return?
Would love to persist with this bloke, we are light on for kpp an to lose Beau would be a big loss imo.

Exactly, I remember Mark Evans saying recently that he will be Mark Williams replacement. Now to lose both and Thorp, we have really shot ourselves in the foot.

Am having a very tough day... Lol... Lmao...fml?

All I have left to say is if we lose two number 6 picks in two years- when the footballing ability is not necessarily the sole issue, then there are serious questions that must be asked of the men who are in charge of developing these kids when they get to the club.

Of course players will always be responsible for taking opportunities when presented- but these instances will be few and far between if our coaches don't show leadership, faith, and instill belief in the players. If all they do is criticise and chastise over perceived failures, if they aren't interested in finding different ways of communicating their messages- whether they be as simple as playing in front doesn't matter- if they exude forms of hate, said player will never succeed because nothiing that they do will ever be good enough.

These players join the club as 17/18 year old kids. They often move out with other players- and invariably they spend more time at the club than they do with their parents an family. The club has a role to play in how they develop in the world. If we don't have 'worldly' people in charge of them, if we don't have people who understand this greater responsibility to the holistic development of people- then we don't have the right people in charge.

We can research tactics and gameplans and be as knowledgable as we like- but coaching is about people... No more metaphors, no more analogies... The players aren't troops, they aren't machines... They are human beings. If all we are interested in is playin with people we like, and playing the players who can intellectually describe and act out the coaches instructions- then we are doomed to fail. There are many types of people in the world- all of which could add value to the beast known as the team.

I've said it before... Where has the Hfc's humanity gone?

DannyJ- write the letter. The lack of leadership and direction, coupled with the petulance on the field of our most senior players is awful. Why do we read so many things about someone who rates dowler highly- why do other clubs seek him out- if there's nothing there? This reeks. It truly reeks... Borderline bullying...

My greatest fear is that critics of the club, including fans, won't get through to the types of people who just sit there shakin their head, thinking they're right.

End of rant.

it's because of mortons dilligence and intelligence... We've robbed our team of instinct and Have seemingly no appreciation for it... Yet instinct is partly composed of the will to compete- which we all know is something we are severely lacking...

Eg: it's as simple as seeing a forward lead out and mark lace out in front of themself that can lift those around them.

Play him.

7 goals in 2 games at the end of last year, and now we shift him all over the place at Box Hill. (Not saying he was about to take the world by storm).

If what is written above is true, then the coach should cop a kick in the backside.

Talented Talls > Mediocre Assistant Coaches.

Re the OP, I'm putting two and two together here and possibly getting five, but one poster on the BHH board here said after last weekend that he wanted to punch Rick MacGowan in the face for what he was saying about one of the players. As for the rest, you'd have to ask him.

I've said it before... Where has the Hfc's humanity gone?

This is the best question that really needs to be answered.

I have been following this great club for 40 years and there have always been high standards both morally and professionally because of the people that were in charge. This type of ethos has always translated through to the players even in some of our leanest years.

I do not think it is a mere coincidence that since the 2008 GF and allowing for all the discussed reasons, that it is only on occasions that we tend to show what we can really do. I get the feeling that deep down the majority of the players have become disillusioned with the inner working at the Club.

I have worked in many work environments over the last 40 years and if there is one thing that I have learnt and it is this; if the organisation does not engender the right culture within, then there is little point asking its employees to perform to their highest abilities.

I really hope this is like a very bad dream and all the perceived problems are addressed and rectified before we end up a basket case of a team and have a culture that is any thing but the true Hawthorn Spirit.
