The SANFL eh? Visionless as ever.
Nah the sanfl actually had vision until about October 1986 when it didn't join the expanded VFL and started going into full protection mode.

Beat the Vics to using the interchange bench, beat them to Sunday football and would have beaten them to night games for premiership points if the government didnt have a ****en Royal Commission into using lights at a footy ground. Don Brebner when he became president at 39 had vision. Don Roach as CEO had vision, even Max the first few years had vision, but once SA won a few state of origin games and the VFL expanded they got smug, scared and lazy.

Brebner backed Packer when World Series came calling, he saw an opportunity and took it up, plus he saw the need to piss off the Adelaide establishment at the SACA, and set up the committee in 1969 to look for a home away from the SACA's visionless greed.

Norwood were approached to join they VFL but whimped out. Ports took up the offer and were blocked by the other SNAFL clubs, including Norwood, which led to the creation of the Crows. Norwood put in a joint bid with some equally irrelevant SNAFL club for the second SA based AFL licence but lost out to Ports so are now destined to be another irrelevant SNAFL club until they eventually fold.

Ports having the first AFL licence and Norwood having the second would have been great but they made their own bed and now are forced to lie in it.
And I sincerely hope that said bed is their death bed.

I think the original questions have been answered and the less time spent on Norwood the better.
Sez who. Sez you? Mr Negative No All Everything.
Trot off to your corner and work on your long threatened non existent questions re the China Strategy.
As you seem to hoard hanging-judge delusions re what should or shouldn't go into somebody elses's thread - a new friend no less from Brazil who is keen to learn the history of our Club and the competion it has broadly dominated - I would prefer for you to henceforth clam up and clock out.
You are out of luck. You got me on a very bad afternoon.

I have said it before, and will say it again. Probably the most ambitious 'ZERO' at the front of a number in history.

They add them on the same side when players and officials ask for a salary increase.

Quoted because can't like twice etc.

I'd say the maximum number of teams the AFL will ever have is 22.

Norwood zero chance to be one of those four.

My guesses are
- Tasmania
- NT
- NSW 3 & 4
- Far North Queensland
- ACT

There is no way Norwood offers more to the AFL than those prospects.
Most likely --- in order:

Tasmania
WA 3rd side
NSW 3rd side/ACT
QLD 3rd Side
NZ
SA 3rd Side
Melbourne 11th Side
China
NT

We'll never go past 20 teams IMO

Short version. When Port saw the writing on the wall of the SA based competition and looked to join the expanded Victorian Football League (now AFL), Norwood were our biggest rival. They also had been making enquiries to join, but when our talks leaked, instead of saying they'd support our bid in return for us supporting them as the second SA side, they joined the other SA clubs taking legal action (leading to Adelaide in 1990 instead of us, with us having to wait for 1997).

Their reward for jealousy and cowardice is now they are a dying local only club with bugger all supporters, instead of our SA rival in the AFL. Most of their supporters went to following Adelaide and wouldn't come back. SA can't support three AFL sides, certainly not a Norwood whose supporter demographics overlaps much more with the Crows then Ports. They certainly have gotten everything they deserved.

Absolutely correct. Both Port and Norwood were entertained by the vfl at an interstate venue back in 1983 to consider joining an expansion league. Norwood were as deeply interested but a few years later when the invitations became serious the Port board looked to Norwood and suggested both clubs support each other in entering the vfl. Norwood got cold feet and watched Port get knifed. NFC organised to subpoena each of Port's board members. By 94 they tried to buddy up with the sanfl to win their favour and get the second licence albeit with a futile merger with Sturt. They had an opportunity to show fortitude but decided to side with the losers.

Leigh & Max at the press conference to announce we won the 2nd AFL license in '94.

How's that shit sandwich taste, gents?

Learning that the entire process for the second licence was a sham as the AFL had told the SANFL it would be Port Adelaide - not even Bucky knew - makes photos such as these extra special.

you may have answered your own question. now go back to your cook books while you try to work out whether this post of mine is a better joke or not than that of the pain in the arse you are for some uninformed reason defending.

Boults & Bucky really enjoyed making dat shit official...

Max saying through gritted teeth "just smile Leigh, we'll **** them with the stadium deal"

Made a presentation to the VFL about an Adelaide team joining an expanded comp in '81 (or maybe '82?)
Then became GM of the Sydney Swans at the end of '84.
His yesterday's man for today replacement:

The presentation was in 1982. The SA conspiracy theory is that VFL got him out of the SANFL and set him up for failure at Sydney.

I think it was more the Swans were struggling with the move into foreign football territory and a few months after Roach started in the job, the VFL would be selling the licence to a private owner, first time ever in VFL and a major footy state a club has been owned by a private owner not membership based. The VFL were smart enough to know they need a top football administrator to oversee that. The Powerplay guys, who really owned Sydney, not the broke PR front man Edelsten, sacked Roach at the end of 1986 because they didnt get on. You had the footy administrator vs the private guys needing a quick return on their money.

Reading about Port's History, SANFL was dominated by two teams: Port and Norwood. What has happened to the Redlegs? Do they have a strong fan base? Did they lose the train of History or they could become a third SA's AFL team? Can Adelaide support three AFL teams?

Norwood's History intrigued me...

Norwood have a great history. I come from a Norwood family, some of which played for them during successful eras.

In terms of the AFL, they have a fractured fan base. A large portion of their older supporters follow Melbourne, some follow the Crows, some gravitated to Port and some follow nobody.

The ship has sailed for their AFL ambitions. If the Crows were true to their word in honouring the SANFL they would spend more time educating the public on clubs like Norwood and Sturt, just like we do.

I've got a lot of respect for the club, like the PAFC does too.
