I just had to put down my individual thoughts on the Essendon game. I think it was the best game that the Brisbane Lions have played. They faced a full strength Essendon side that was in great form and switched on for the game. The first half was excellent, with every half mistake being punished. The Lions however won the entire game except for about 20 minutes, late in the first quarter and early in the second quarter where Essendon kicked 6 goals to the Lions 1. For the rest of the game it was about 24 goals to 6 in the Lions favour. Every single player contributed at some stage, with the attack on the football as good as I have seen it. the tackling and pressure was first rate, and the Lions willingness to run hard both forward and back was exemplary.

The Lions do seem to rise against sides they view as challenges, yet this was more than snuffing out another challenge. This was a football lesson, you think you guys are good well then check out what we can do. Essendon's match winners (Hird. Lloyd, J.Johnson) had reasonable games, but were of little consequence on the match. In past 'good' wins the lions have tended to blow sides away early and then coast, but on Saturday night Essendon were playing close to their best footy and were still taken to the cleaners.

This game doesn't mean we have the flag won, there are still numerous hurdles to clear yet, but it showed that for the past 3 years I have supported the best football club for a great number of decades, and most likely ever.

Have to agree, and i said it during the game, this is the best i have ever seen them play in the regular season. It was a performance of a team at the peak of their powers, my only disappointment was that every performance from now on wont be as good for i fail to see how they could improve on a near perfect performance. The only other one that spring to mind are the last grand final thrashing of Collingwood. I only hope that I can keep perspective on the rest of the season, and remember the way they played in this game. I have a vision in 5 years time, looking back at this golden time with misty eyes, for i truly believe that we will not see this ever again by anyone in the modern era. I hope we can all appreciate what a wonderful thing that our boys are achieving right now, because one day it will end, sad but true. I truly intend to wring every last drop of enjoyment out of this period, I hope everyone else feels the same.

I know how you feel - but that Heritage game v Pies when the guys just went BANG and knocked the wind right out of the ferals ( and previewed the GF ) - Roys strip and all - was amazing.

Lukey Power was interviewed on radio immediately after the game. The intervewer asked if this was the best he'd seen Brisbane play. Luke said, "I don't know, I thought the 2003 Grand Final was pretty good."

IMHO, Saturday night was as good as any team can play. I tend to agree with Luke though, last year's GF was pretty special, particularly seeing Collingwood got 3 goals in junk time in the final quarter to salvage a sliver of pride.

Our champion Lions saw one of their young apprentices poleaxed by a coward. What that drove out of them was the laziness of seesawing football. They gave their best to the final siren unlike anything we usually see from the cruisers. I don't know about the rest of you but christ I could've taken on Essendon right there and then. And the same thought that went through my head and most lions fans I'm guessing was "BRING IT ON YOU WEAK **** YOU'RE ABOUT TO GET ****ING SMASHED)(*!^#$" And then young Corrie with eyes for the ball and courage way beyond his years outmarked that cheap piece of **** PhcMee.. Half a suburb could've heard me at that point.. I knew we were about to see something very special out of our lions and god damn didn't they deliver.

Agreed , forgotten about that one, was that the one where pikey poleaxed one of them, shaw? there was a great photo on afl.com i think it was with pikey standing over one of them with a look of contemp on his face. priceless.

I don't think I have seen the team play better. My only concern is that it was only round twelve. Have we peaked too early? It's a long way to September.

*chuckle* yeah I gotta stop doing things by halves :D
How could one not get emotionally strung up watching footy like that though.

As enjoyable as the two Collingwood games were (Rnd 17 and GF) I think the difference is the Bombers came to play.

It was like end-to-end blitzkrieg early on. They played as close to perfect as they can at this time, and when it wasn't enough to break Brisbane, I think they thought 'Jeez,.. I'm not sure if we can keep that up all night".

A tiny crack of doubt, they blinked once, and the dam burst.

But they were very sharp and that's what makes Brisbanes effort better.

Collingwood were mugged before they reached their positions in those games.

From a neutral point of view (maybe a little bias to the lions), they was a sensational game to watch. It all games played were as quick, highly skilled and entertaining as that attendances would go through the roof.

Me too.
I turned to my bomber mate & said that was the last thing that the bombers should do. ie. make the Lions mad & that they will pay a heavy price for their actions. (Peverill included).

I just knew what would happen in the 2nd half.:)

When you go to the ground in a train full of braying, bragging Pie ferals and then you return on the same train in total silence, it's a moment to treasure. Still, any season where you can knock over Pies, Blues and Bombers can't be bad. Shame we don't play the Tigers at the G !
