I found a thread like this on the Melbourne board and thought it'd be a lot of fun to do the same thing. Basically, I'll have our whole list of players who have played an AFL game and we have to debate their best games and hopefully we can come up with a list for our full squad. The game doesn't necessarily have to be their best either. It can be the game where they had the most influence or did something that lifted the team or has pretty much defined that player as a member of the Crows.

Scott Welsh - Round 13, 2005 vs. Richmond (TD) http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2005/ADRI20050618.html

This post will be constantly updated as we start getting some aggreance on nominations. I'll start with a few suggestions of my own in my next post.

Knights: Rnd 2 2007 vs. Doggies
VB: Same as above
Reilly: 2006 QF Vs. Freo. Has had better numbers but was brilliant in that game.
Porps: Rnd 22 2006 vs. Melbourne.
Griff: Rnd 2 2007 Vs. Doggies. 14 HO 11 disposals.
Andrew Mcleod: Pick 1 of 100. Would have to be the two GF's for the importance, but then again without him in the prelims we may never have been there.

Nathan Bock - roughly Round 6-8 from memory in 2005 vs. St.Kilda at the Dome on a Friday night. He played as CHB on Nick Riewoldt after we had all been calling for his head. He absolutely towelled St.Nick that week and the Crows thumped the Saints after trailing badly at the end of the first.

Richard Douglas - Was it the Qualifying Final against Freo last year when he marshalled the troops at 3/4 time in only his third AFL game? That's my nomination. I'm pretty sure it was that final. Big moment for him.

Luke Jericho - around the middle of the season in 2005 when he kicked a bag (I think it was 5) in an absolute drubbing of the Bombers.

Ivan Maric - that first goal he kicked vs. Port Adelaide in his first game from the Tony Hall pocket. Defining moment in a short career to date.

Andrew McLeod - Round 22 vs. Kangaroos 2001. The Brownlow was in the bag with Macca GUARANTEED to poll three votes after a freak of nature performance in the final game of the season where he amassed 35 disposals and I think he kicked a couple too. We all remember how the umpires rated his performance that night though... :(

Mark Ricciuto - someone will have to help me with the year but I think it was around Round 14-16 and I'd put in on either 2000 or 2001 when he was moved to full forward for the last quarter down at the Cattery and kicked a bag for an unlikely come from behind win on hostile territory. That was the day Gary Ayres famously gave it to the Geelong faithful.

Ben Rutten - Dream final vs. Port. Tredrea held him to one goal but Truck was effective in other parts of the ground.

Scott Stevens - that dreadful loss against the Tigers at the Dome last year was the arrival of Scott Stevens. Played a very good game in a new role across the back line ala Nathan Bock's nomination from me. In fact, the week Stevens had this game was a week many were calling for his head and I commented on this treatment being exactly like the treatment Bock got 12 months earlier.

Nathan van Berlo - all

Roo - Round 7 2001, vs the power, Kicked 4 goals, and racked up 41 touches, just a quiet game!! :)

Scott Welsh - 2005 vs Richmond (TD), kicked 8 goals 2 i think, was dominant.

rutten - showdown final, where he completely bitchafied warren, and even chimed in for a goal himself

mcleod - 98 grand final, we were ****ed, he un****ed us :thumbsu:

Nathan Bock: 2005 at the Dome. Played a blinder on St. Nick and was instrumental in our crushing victory.

Brett Burton: Round 9, 2001 vs. Brisbane at the GABBA. The last game for Brisbane as a mortal team. Was absolutely brilliant up forward that night, kicking 4 goals including one of the best contested pack marks in the history of the game.

Trent Hentschel: 8 against Essendon last year. Was unstoppable.

Graham Johncock: Round 19, 2003 vs West Coast at Subiaco. In a fantastic win where we shared it around wonderfully (only one player cracked 20 possessions - Roo), Stiffy was electric up forward booting 4 goals all at the most opportune of times.

Andrew McLeod: '98 Grand Final. A while back I watched the DVD and decided to count the goal assists. McLeod had 7 from memory. A masterful performance.

Robert Shirley: The first round of 2005 when he blanketed Judd at AAMI was the making of him as a footballer. Hasn't been dropped since.

Ian Perrie - The Day he kicked 8 against Melbourne
Scott Thompson - That game on a Friday night against Melbourne last year
Kenny McGregor - Qualifying final Vs. Saints Only player to stand up.
Benny Rutten - When he played on Johnno Brown and tore him a new one when Brown was kicking 8 goals a week. IIRC he got Brownlow votes for that game.

Scott Welsh - 2005 vs Richmond (TD), kicked 8 goals 2 i think, was dominant.

VB – Round 5 2006 Vs Western Bulldogs. Where he completely shut Brad Johnson out of the game.

Kenny McGregor - Qualifying final Vs. Saints Only player to stand up.
I agree with these three.

I guess it'd be pretty safe to put Welsh, Hentschel and Bock up for the respective performances that they've been mentioned for in this thread. And Jericho too coz it was his only good game. :p

Let's hear a few more nominations and if you agree with some other that people have posted then voice that opinion so we can start getting some up in the original post.

I reckon the best game I have seen Scott Stevens play was two weeks ago versus the bulldogs.

I disagree with that one on the basis that Tredders is shite.
In 2005 Truck played one game on Jonathon Brown who was in the middle of one of his hot streaks and shut him down completely (1 goal scored) while accumalating 25 possesions and 2 Brownlow Votes himself. http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2005/ADBL20050514.html

Kris Massie - The game against Brisbane at the GABBA last year? - http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2006/ADBL20060610.html

IMO Round 12 2005 Adelaide Vs Geelong @ Skilled Stadium.

Scott Thompson’s best game for the AFC was when we played Geelong in Victoria. We lost that day but IMO it was still Scott Thompson’s best game.

:D

Hang on.

Tredders had just come off 17 disposals, 13 marks and 4 goals against the Kangaroos in the Elimination Final at the Dome - and was in white hot form overall.

For Rutten to blanket him - and kick a goal himself - was a fantastic performance.

As for the game on Brown, he'd just kicked 8 goals vs Essendon and 5 against the Dogs. After the Adelaide game the big unit from Brisbane reverted to inconsistent type, being held to 0 goals and 10 possessions against mighty Richmond.

Pound for pound the Semi Final performance was far more valuable given the job he did and the stage they were on.

Agree - round 8 @ AAMI

Kris Massie - The game against Brisbane at the GABBA last year?

Disagree - Round 22 2005, Kris Massie came back into the side and was given the job of tagging the Los Vegas kid Chad Fletcher and allowed the AFC to win the minor premiership.

Some "defining" games rather than "greatest" games:

Martin Mattner Round 3, 2005 - the week he went from "he's probably worth a place into the side" to "that'll be 3 Showdown Brownlow votes, thanks"

Scott Stevens Round 12, 2006 - yet another Crow who's defining moment came against Nick Riewoldt. Luke Jericho, your time will come. ;)

Jason Torney Round 1, 2003 - anyone who'd seen him at Richmond knew what we are getting, but while the Carey / Stevens / Perrie forward line got the ink, Torney's debut in the tricolour was a sign of his class.

Brent Reilly A toss up. Round 14, 2004 when the Ayres shackles came off and Brent showed some real sparkle across half back, or Round 3 2005, when he showed he could be a midfielder in this league.

Ian Perrie: Rd 22 2005 vs WCE

Simon Goodwin: RD 16 vs WB 2002 (held to pretty much nothing in the first half and then got over 25 possessions in the 2nd half and a few goals)

Matthew Bode

Id like to give a shout out to the Bodester.

His game against the Bulldogs 2 weeks ago where his attack on the ball frightened sh ite out of a brownlow medallist and led to a team lifting and inspirational goal is a good example of why he should be in the first 22.

Yeah sure he hasnt quite got rid of the " kick around the corner " but Id pick him based purely on guts alone; not to mention his crumbing ability and chasedowns.

If anyone wants to debate to the contary go to bay 19 and do not pass go:D

We may just have to agree to disagree.

I value the Brown game higher as it was played in a losing side, against a more talented forward and because it was before Rutten was universaly renound as the gun he is today. I think it was this game that had him pencilled in for AA that year.

That's the part I strongly disagree with.

At the time of both games Tredrea was a reigning 4 time All-Australian Centre Half Forward, 3 time Best and Fairest and Premiership Captain, whereas Brown was an undecorated, inconsistent and injury-prone player brimming with unfulfilled potential.

Judge the games and situations as they happened, not 2 years on when Tredrea looks an injury crock and Brown looks like finally putting some real runs on the board provided he can stay fit.

This may be bias but i've always found Tredders to be overrated. Yes he took a lot of marks but how many of them are leading up onto wings. I would love to see somone analyse his record on actual good backmen. If you measure Tredders stats against Truck, Glass, Scarlett and Fletcher i'd think you'd find he cannot play on talented defenders. He is merely the football equivalent of Mathew Hayden scoring 380 against Zimbabwae. He's a flat track bully and not much more who cannot take a contested mark to save himself.

But that's not the point.

I think the way the Crows and to a lesser extent Tredera and the Powers were playing that night anyone of the key defenders (Bock, Basset) could of given Warren a hiding and if not we still would of won by a good margin. On the night against Brisbane Truck had little help defending one of the premier forwards in the competition, who was in hot form and who had the midfield of Aker, Black, Power, Lappin and Voss delivering to him and tore him a new one:thumbsu:

OK...
