best no.1 draft pick

At the moment, Riewoldt by a mile. I think that Cooney has the potential to get close, but he's a long way behind at the moment and I suspect that he'll never fully realise his potential, which, considering he's won a brownlow shows how highly I rate his potential. I'm sure that you would have been hoping for a Carlton player. FWIW I rate all of your number ones, but I think that none of them will ever be one of the best three players in the AFL, I think that Riewoldt is one of teh best three players going around. I just don't think that they have the physical attributes to become more than very good players. Gibbs will never be explosive like Judd or Ablett, therefore he'll always be taggable. Murphy is a good all round package, but he doesn't really do anything at an elite level and also lacks the explosiveness to make him untaggable. Kreuzer is a bit too inbetween a ruck and a key forward, for me to be truly excited about him. I can't see him really dominating either role. The best case scenario for him is servicable or a bit above in regards to ruck work and dominant around the ground, eg Cox with less hitouts.

Reiwoldt then Cooney.

Others since Cooney, based on AFL performances so far, won't get to his level. Cooney is the whole package.

Right now there are thirteen #1 picks (not including Tom Scully) who are in the AFL (played in 2009).

There are several ways to look at this.

From 2009 form

1. Nick Riewoldt.
2. Brendan Goddard
3. Bryce Gibbs
4. Marc Murphy
5. Adam Cooney (had a decidingly average year after winning the Brownlow, but will step back up to at least #4 next year I think)
6. Brett Deledio
7. Matthew Kreuzer
8. Luke Hodge
9. Josh Fraser
10. Michael Gardiner
11. Travis Johnstone
12. Des Headland
13. Jack Watts

Based on career form

1. Nick Riewoldt
2. Adam Cooney
3. Luke Hodge
4. Michael Gardiner (not the same player he was, but had a good career)
5. Brendan Goddard
6. Marc Murphy
7. Bryce Gibbs
8. Brett Deledio
9. Josh Fraser
10. Matthew Kreuzer
11. Travis Johnstone
12. Des Headland
13. Jack Watts

Based on what they've achieved and future potential

1. Nick Riewoldt
2. Adam Cooney
3. Bryce Gibbs
4. Matthew Kreuzer
5. Brett Deledio
6. Brendan Goddard
7. Marc Murphy
8. Jack Watts
9. Luke Hodge
10. Michael Gardiner
11. Josh Fraser
12. Travis Johnstone
13. Des Headland

For mine it's Riewoldt, Cooney, Goddard followed by the Blues trio and Deledio right up there. We were robbed of what could have been an era of brilliance from Gardiner. While Hodge has certainly done very well as a key premiership player. Jack Watts has the potential to be great, but hasn't been setting the world on fire yet (give the kid time). Fraser (to a certain extent), Johnstone and Headland are the only real disappointments of the group.

Hodge should be above Gibbs and Cooney. Kreuzer should be above Gibbs, but Carlton is wasting his talent having so many ruckmen on its list and wanting to play him up forward. Headland has been better than Fraser.

By the way, Gaspar and Jeff White were pretty good too. They would be in front of Gardiner and others.

I'm a bit surprised Johnstone is on that list. He is a decent player but not always a starter for Brisbane. Not sure though:o

Not trying to knock him or anything. Good player just would of thought other top draft picks would be above him.

I don't know, I really rate Gibbs. I believe he's a shoe-in to win at least one Brownlow medal and I hope that we win at least one premiership with all of that young talent that we amassed when we apparently 'tanked' (happened when I was living in the USA, so I didn't get to see any of the tactics that were employed).

Cooney's already a Brownlow medalist and has potential for more. He also has a real big opportunity to become a premiership player this year also. So the potential is there to be very better than Hodge (which is why I tagged potential).

I don't think that Carlton are wasting Kreuzer's talents at all. A team needs two or three quality ruck to survive modern football. He also has the potential to be a champion across the half forward line. I'm glad we have the ruck stocks that we do. At least one (Hampson quite likely) will become more of a permanent forward than a ruck splitting duties with Kreuzer.

Warnock needs to prove that he's capable of being healthy before he can ever prove anything out on the field, while Sauce Jacobs is a fantastic depth option in case of injury (again something all teams need).

As for Travis Johnstone being on the list -- the topic of the post is "best no. 1 draft pick" -- there are thirteen currently playing in the AFL (not counting the incumbent Scully). Travis being one of them. Other top draft picks being ahead of him? Apart from Headland (who had a worse 2009 and has never really been better than Johnstone for all of the shit we throw at T.J.) and Watts (didn't get much opportunity as expected in his first year) he is the bottom of the barrel.

If you are going on 2009 form then Murphy is ahead of Gibbs.. He kicked over 30 goals and also beat him in the Bnf. This is also the case on career form as Murphy came 2nd to Judd again in the BnF. On potential its pretty even. But
Murphy is clearly ahead ATM.

Adam Cooney. He is the only No.1 pick to win a Brownlow Medal :thumbsu:
