I'd prefer a player that can have an impact himself, whilst limiting the impact of whoever he's on. Cameron Ling's performance in the GF is what I'm after.

And I'd like a 100 goal a year full forward. But I'd settle for 40 from JA.

If lower or de Boer could control a player as well as Ling they could definitely hurt the other way.

Which is what I'd prefer. If it was Lower versus Judd and they both ended up with 18 disposals with the majority of Judd's being handballs under pressure, where he basically does nothing of note. Whilst Lower effectively plays his normal game - maybe kicks a goal, maybe sets a goal up, blocks for his team-mates, tackles like crazy etc - just with a more defensive focus. Carlton end up getting a B-C grade performance out of Judd, which is a loss. Fremantle get a B grade performance out of Lower and limit Judd's influence. I just think that's a bigger win, than both players ending up with zilch.

I mentioned a possible different role for Deboer because of a new focus on our stoppages with Mark Stone.

Another player who may be marked for a new role is Nick Lower who I regard as the closest player to Deboer.
They both strike me as being ideal for that blocking and muscling around packs.
Nick Lower just covers so much ground and seems to have absolutely no trouble at being where the ball is.

I think early Jan 2012 we will find out what sort of role Nick will have.

I eagerly await training reports from Salim on drills supervised by Mark Stone.

Deboer and Lower look perfect for stoppages grunt.
I've just watched a replay of the Brisbane game at Subi from this year and Nick Lower is a really tough hombre.

He simply must be onball.

I'd prefer 3x 50 goal a year forwards than a 100 goal a year forward :P

Nate Fyfe will be the next Pavlich. Has good numbers and it will only be a matter of time until he's playing CHF/MID role. I can honestly see him as a 35 goal a year plus player next year.

I can see him as a Brownlow medallist but it won't come with just 35 goals a year.

In my view , this is where successive coaches have erred with Pavlich.

He is and should have been one or the other.

The way Pavlich has been used has compromised the team's structure and causally led to our lack of a game plan.

Nat Fyfe under Ross Lyon will explode over the next two years. He is truly elite.

Pav should be majority of the time CHF or FF, the more he is run through the mid posibly the shorter his career will be.

If he and Fyfe lined up across the hf line most teams would struggle to match up on them.

The only problem is Nat Fyfe is such a good player all over the ground that Lyon will want to play him as a mid and fair enough too.

It's easy enough to get involved through the midfield as a HF. Particularly given the way rotations work these days.

Morabito and Fyfe could almost split their forward/midfield time.

Morabito/Fyfe switching mid/fwd with Hill/Pitt switching mid/back could prove pretty deadly.

I agree that Lower is wasted on the flanks, however I disagree with De Boer being wasted as our negating player. Hard, fast, applies pressure around the contest, can win his own ball in close, big body, good hands and he's willing to work for his team-mates. Seems ideally suited to that role IMO.

I don't like the idea of a negating player simply shutting down his opponent and having no impact himself. Turning the game into a 17 v 17 contest is a waste of time these days. It's simply having more of a defensive focus, than a player focus. I'd still want him doing all the 1%ers, getting around 18-20 disposals, bringing our play makers into the game and generally just making life super difficult for his opponent. I'd say that would be playing to his strengths rather than wasting them.

I think we are essentially saying the same thing. IMO a tagger is a Clint Jones or JVB type that focuses solely on 'stopping' his opponent, and really offers nothing the other way.

De Boer needs to be freed up to an extent. As you said he is hard, fast, applies pressure around contests, has great hands and can win his own ball in-close. However, MDB will always be a defensively-minded mid and with both Lower and him on ball, our midfield will be more accountable.

And if he can start picking up possession counts in the 20s, you know they are going to be 20 team-oriented possessions, dishing off to teammates. He is a tough, hard ball-magnet and both Lower and him could become our versions of Boyd and Cross or Luke Ball if we let them. Add those numbers/qualities to a midfield of Mundy, Barlow, Mora, Fyfe, Hill and Suban, and apart from using Crowley at times, we may not need a pure tagger for majority of games.

At this stage I'd rather see Hill and Ballantyne rotate. If we were able to get Hill isolated one-on-one inside the forward 50 occasionally, it would cause most opposition a few headaches.

I don't think we'll see too much of Pitt in 2012.

I don't want to see Pitt in Purple again until he has gained 12 kilos or starts to shave. whichever comes first or preferably both.

Playing him last year was tantamount to child abuse.

Ease up soldier - I hope he bleeds purple 24/7 for the next 10 years.

His boyish charm makes him a good replacement for 'Pretty Boy' Duffield - bringing style and perfectly executed kick ins for years to come.

I heard Stevie Baker is trialling him on his latest product - TaiBeef and I certainly look forward to seeing him outmuscling the breeze this season.

So only play him in away games that do not involve Sydney?

So he's going to play naked against North and Geelong in Melbourne?

Well if he's not sunburn we will obviously paint purple chevrons on him.
