Pardon the intrusion Cattery but thought I'd offer an outsiders thoughts on the Cats Best 22 in 2018

FULL BACK: Jed Bews ~ Lachie Henderson ~ Jake Kolodjashnij
HALF BACK: Zach Tuohy ~ Harry Taylor ~ Tom Stewart
CENTRE: Mitch Duncan ~ Joel Selwood ~ Nakia Cockatoo
HALF FORWARD: Sam Menegola ~ Stewart Crameri ~ Gary Ablett
FULL FORWARD: Brandon Parfitt ~ Tom Hawkins ~ Tim Kelly
1st RUCK: Zac Smith ~ Scott Selwood ~ Patrick Dangerfield
INTERCHANGE: Daniel Menzel ~ Cameron Guthrie ~ Mark Blicavs ~ Jackson Thurlow/ James Parsons

  • Defence is pretty settled with Guthrie able to play lock down back there as well. Zac Guthrie has shown promise as a lock down defender also and could be brought in if required.
  • As tempting as it is to throw Dangerwoodlett into the starting midfield I don't think it's that neccesary especially with the natural progression of Cockatoo. Use Ablett in that second string midfield with Menegola and maybe Tim Kelly.
  • Given Crameri first crack alongside Hawkins but that could well be Buzza as well.
  • Parfitt and Kelly gets first crack at the small forward but AFL experienced players like McCarthy, Gregson will be around the mark as well as maybe the first year players like Lochie Fogarty and Gryan Miers

Don't like any teams put up with Crameri at CHF and Blicavs as second ruck,I hope others put their hands up for those positions during the season, those 2 positions are or weakest links.

Agree that you'd want someone like Buzza to step up in that CHF role.

As a Cats fan you'd probably be a better judge than me but how far off is Timm House. Another CHF option?

Both I believe have just had their contracts extended so I guess they are some chance, more likely Buzza I guess, but it's not that simple and not all on this board will agree with me which is fine but to simply put Buzza to CHF and retain Blicavs who can't ruck anyway only adds height to the side and adds to in balance for little gain.I like Blits but I'm increasingly finding it harder to slot him into my most balanced 22 based on this years positions played,as opposed to best 22.

He is our best option for full forward now that we have Garry in midfield. Not sure if Scott would be bold (or mad) enough to go with this as more than a once in a while thing though (kinda like a plan b ha ha), he is very invested in the whole team defence thing, as is the entire competition.

Yes ..and going by the report of the meeting the other night , you better not question that either. He is at great pains to tell the uppity plebs and unwashed masses about their simplistic way of looking at things , and they they really don't understand ... one senses that the emperor doesn't like his new clothes being questioned.

Ha ha yes I’ve already been caught up in that one! Speaking of tactics though, I think it’s a very sad thing that a lot of that forward craft has been sacrificed to make everyone a defender. Moons was talking on sen about all the leading patterns and repeat efforts that he had to learn when he first came to the cats, and how he and the other forwards had to learn to work together etc. - a lot of that craft is lost to the game now, redundant at least at its higher levels, with every player now drilled to sweep forward and back with the ball. It’s a shame, and not least because it was better (more interesting and more entertaining) to watch than the current stuff.

This is what I have been hoping they will be doing during the preseason; injuries nonwithstanding.

I reckon out of the 18yo's that we just drafted, I think Miers will be the one that surprises us early. His body shape is almost AFL ready, a natural goal sneak, and seems to have a good engine... Just if he can work on his breakaway speed with a running coach or something.

I reckon you'll find that Kelly and Fogarty will be the two that have an impact in their first years...

Kelly for sure, have him Best 22. But he's not an 18yo, he is ready to go. I'd say Kelly will have as much as an impact as Menegola did when he broke into the Seniors; although they are slightly different players.

Fogarty should be good, but I reckon Miers is a bit more developed at this stage.

My nephew was telling me he went to school with Miers and believes he is an excellent get for us.
Sounds like we have drafted well.
Again.

You didn’t miss Buzza, I can see that.
The wing one should be... actually I have no idea who, Blicz was meant to be on the bench.

Now that we have our man back for 2 years, wonder if brother Nathan has any thoughts of getting himself fit enough for selection/contention again.
Nearly impossible, but tantalising.
..............A fit NAblett with Hawkins ..........
Exactly what we .....

Want a depressing thought? It's now been 10 full seasons since Nathan Ablett played for Geelong.
