Glad to see no teams are featuring McCarthy injured or not. Always rated Gregson higher in regard to tackling and pressure, also thought he kicked enough goals to impress too. I never saw McCarthy as the mercurial answer some certainly had.

For me it’s easy, we play 2 small pressure forwards given the modern game. Gregson is my pick, I think we need to just play Jones or Miers and pray to god they have more luck on the injury front then McCarthy and Gregson.
Not sure why GAJ is not one of our permanent small forwards

Horlin Smith everyone knows hes slow - looked like he has had concrete in his books

However he seems to be moving alot better - i can see him playing senior games for Geel this year - George might surprise a few this year
haven't been his fan, but I thought that even last week in the sauna park.

Surely he’ll play most of the time there, assuming he gets fit!

I’m not sure on GAJs pressure though, he’s not fast - certainly not slow. I wouldn’t say he’s the pressure forward we are after though.

I would love to see this forward setup;
HF Ablett Hawkins Cockatoo
FF Gregson Menzal Miers/Jones

I reckon the modern game forces the forward line to down size and be dynamic, run out more Ks. Rely less on pack marks and gain more goals from run downs, lead ups and pressure acts. Seems to be how the last 2 premiers have done it.

GAJ anywhere forward spells pressure to opposition

I thought he played well today.
Was talking to a recent retired Geelong player. And they said George is a very popular bloke in the team. But he does feel for him as a player as we have a few players like him that have that bit better skill.
But in my eye I think he may have a spot in round 1 with the few players that are missing

If Crameri is fit, I would have him in the same team with Menzel and Tomahawk, no if's or but's... Along with Cocky, and Danger and GAJ rotating through there. The rest can be small/medium forward types, that can offer midfield relief. Kelly and Menegola in the mix too, whether on I/C and rotating both forward and midfield.

Ahhhh am I allowed to say this:p.... If Stanley not fit... And Crameri not fit..... Then Black could be in line for a chance? .
As Blitz will have to be our 2nd ruck and may have to help down back.....
If worst case scenarios- No Stanley, PD, GAJ, Hendo, Crameri, Black would def be in contention. Black would have to be a better option than Buzza every day of the week at this point anyway??

He'll play senior games when players are missing from the side, but I find it hard to see him as best 22. He's a depth players. Even so, there's perhaps more merit in playing some kids over him at this stage.

I don't know what people have against Black.

He never starred, but his senior games were all decent enough. I'm fine with him getting a run when we need to draw on him. Classic depth player, just like Horlo.

Iv said it many times before. I actually don't mind him. With the very few games his played for us he hasn't played a poor game. But never played a blinder either. I feel for him. I think he needs to play 4-5 games in a row to show what his got

Agree 100% Langdraft. People have to understand we need depth players. As unfortunately every team has injurys.
It be interesting to see where if the club will think he fits in our club for next year...

Thought it was worthwhile recruiting him, but he's hardly been used or tested.

because we need someone who can actually pass the ball in the midfield. Our midfield disposal lost us a flag last year not small forwards.
Small forwards who can maintain pressure AND kick critical goals - that would help us more imho.
We have Danger, Selwoods, Menegola, Duncan, Guthrie, now Kelly, also Cockatoo- lots of options to get the ball up forward effectively. Adelaide and Richmond had abundant dangerous small forwards who troubled us and most teams last year. McCarthy and Gregson are not up to being relied on there yet.
GAJ started his career there, and would be good to finish there.
Unrealistic to expect him to be a potent Mid for the next 2 years. Hammy already preseason, and what has he been able to play in his past 2 seasons? Average of 12-13 games at best.

how quickly we have all given up on buzza.
He was overhyped last year because of a scant physical resemblance to Ben Brown. He may yet make a good player, but he has yet to prove anything.

This. Ratugolea has shown more in his couple of games than buzza has, and the coaching staff have ratugolea ahead of buzza in the pecking order currently.

CMIA? Are we talking JLT? Sav has not played a real game yet has he? And at least Buzza has kicked goals i the real stuff. Id agree if you said he looks to have the most upside , potential based on athletic talents id say Sav if keeps developing will probably go past Buzza

I'm confused as to why Henderson and S.Selwood are not considered due to injury. I thought the whole point of a "best 22" was that it included all players on the list, regardless of their availability for selection.
If injured players are excluded, then how does the "best 22" (without injured players) differ from the teams people propose in the weekly match threads? One of the above posters even wrote "rd 1" above - I thought that's what the match thread is for?

Also, if Dangerfield is deemed unavailable for round 1, then presumably he would also not be considered part of Geelong's "best 22" if Henderson and S.Selwood are excluded due to their injuries.

Especially since both Henderson and Selwood should be available by round 5.[/QUOTE
OK Toey, Best 22 it is
Thurlow Henderson Bews
Tuohy Taylor Stewart
Kelly S.Selwood Duncan
Crameri Hawkins McCarthy
Menzel Dangerfield Cockatoo
Smith Selwood Ablett
Guthrie Parfitt Menegola Kolo
Emer: from Gregson Buzza Constable Miers Fogarty Stanley Murdoch GHS
Ratagolea Jones Cunico Parsons Gardner

Still surprised they didnt give henry house and hayball a run in the jlt. Looks like we might be losing some h's at the end of the season

Look we all know Dangerfield would be dangerous playing FF but the guy won a Brownlow Medal playing in the midfield... Why would you want to play him permanent as Full Forward as his more dangerous playing in the middle...
Be best to rotate him in the forward line.
Well that's my opinion :grin::geelong:

my argument would be that he appears to have the attributes to be as dangerous a forward as he is a midfielder (appears being the key word at this stage) and we're desperate for an elite forward whereas we're pretty well stocked in the midfield. that said, I won't be upset seeing the more likely scenario of him and ablett rotating through.

We can solve both arguments by placing an ageing but brilliant goal kicker. with dodgy body, as a small forward all year. He is a natural small forward, and would score more than Hawkins if allowed.
He = GAJ of course.
