Crowley. Don't think he was beaten last year, shut down all the comp's best players, won the BnF.
Agree, but J. Watson beat him in round 13

Sewell, if he was in this poll.
Carrazzo/Selwood in terms of being able to hurt the opposition by winning their own ball as well as doing the stopping role.
In terms of a purely defensive role: Crowley.

Sewell usually goes head to head with the opposition's best inside mid but doesn't tag as such

Shiels is Hawthorn's only real tagger this year, going to the mid with the most 'hurt factor' usually

Picken with a biased vote here. From what I saw Crowley is a great tagger. After that would be Clinton Jones.

Carazzo and Crowley at the moment. In a few years, I can see Taylor Hunt becoming a real pain(if he isn't already) and shutting down the opposition's best.

Not sure of ops choice for Tagger for Sydney either, Nick Smith is a small defender, Craig Bird has been the one given tagging roles.
Whilst he is small in height & spends most time of each game in the defensive half, he is most certainly a tagger.

I don't think you understand the typical meaning of the word tagger
Nick Smith is a small defender, he plays on small forwards

Tagger is a label generally reserved for a midfielder whose primary goal is to negate the influence of his opponent. Craig Bird, and Rhys Shaw play that role for the swans or on occasion O'Keefe/Jack (although they usually just go head to head)

Sorry but this whole poll is useless unless you are actually naming alike players.

Nick Smith is arguable the best small defender in the league, but a tagger he is not.

Edit:

Equally, Scott Selwood should be named for the Eagles (he was in great form to start the year)
Haven't looked to see who else is incorrect.

Sewell's too good to be classed as a tagger.
Couldn't see a suitable replacement, went with Cheney... dunno why... maybe he looks like a tagger
Well not to know is understandable, as even some Hawk fans have no idea who our tagger is. But it is Shiels :)

Ie. Smith. Yes he does play on the Cyril/Milne/Betts/Ballantyne types, but against other teams that do not possess such dominant small forwards, he quite often takes a player that spends considerable time in the midfield, thus moving himself further up the ground and leaving the defensive role with Mattner.

Bird is more-or-less a defensive forward, occasionally roleplaying mid, he's not really your typical tagger (I know he "tagged" Hodge in the GF)

Shaw is what I would call a small defender, with both defensive acts & rebounding skills as his primary responsibilities.

Each week Smith, whilst a good user of the footy, is primarily used (as you said) to negate an opposition player, and sacrifice almost all of his outside game to prevent his direct opponent from finding space & causing damage.

I would also say that Smith is the player who sacrifices the most of his game for the team's needs, which is why I had him there ahead of the lads you mentioned.
However, in games where he has played in the midfield he has shown the ability to sneak forward and pinpoint the leading targets inside 50 with his precise footskills, and while its not a regular occurance that he can exhibit these skills being a player who is regularly based in the defensive half, he could just as easily play a permanent role at half forward IMO.

But yeah tagger.

Would gladly have Crowley and Picken in the same team. Crowley to take the strong inside player, Picken to blanket the outside receiver.
