So 2016 ... anyone told FBI that we have a Beast we unleashed? No need for stat charts now. Like Chuck Norris, the Beast does not conform to scales and ratings.

Coaches Votes: Sam Docherty (9)
Player Ratings Points (AFL,SEN):

Patrick Cripps - 487.7, 6
Sam Docherty - 431.7, 9
Lachlan Plowman - 279.4, 7
Jacob Weitering - 262.6, 6
Liam Sumner - 110.5, 2

Caleb Marchbank - 97.6, 7

Jacob Silvagni - 107.5, 5
Jed Lamb - 93, 4
Tom Williamson - 53.6, 3
Zac Fisher - 57.5, 4
David Cuningham - 51.6, 6

Average: 177.9, 5.08

How about that win. Did you see that bloody win. What an effort by the boys to get past the best team in the competition and pick up a nail biting victory. it's wonderful what a win does to the stats, they all jump up. Silvagni, Curnow, Cuningham, Plowman all enjoyed big jumps in the rankings. We've now got 3 centurions sitting on our list, Silvagni, Curnow and Sumner, with Marchbank in the nervous nineties about to break through. Our youngest kids have also skipped past 50. You can see it in the team, we have no players who are absolutely lost out there, each and everyone one of our boys can contribute and knows how to do their job.

Our average AFL player rating spiked up to 177, getting towards the kind of territory we were in towards the back end of last year. There is nothing holding us back now, that number will only continue to grow. Our SEN payer ratings average which measures individual performances in game stayed pretty even, while some of our kids had very big games others struggled, but it's promising in a way to see that we are getting a consistent effort out of the youth on gameday across the board averaging in the 5.0-5.1 range for the past 5 weeks.

A full review of these numbers at the HALFWAY mark of our rebuild will be up this weekend, but now onto the game.

Sam Docherty... 35 touches, 74% efficiency, 12 marks, 1 clearance, 5 tackles, 2 1%ers, 8 rebound 50's and 4 inside 50's, the man is simply brilliant, he had complete control of this game, it was his to do with as he pleased setting up our attacks from defence, even with Nick Maxwell in the zone. David Cuningham earned a rising star nomination this week for his 19 possession, 5 marks, 2 inside 50 and 2 goal game. He's got so many tricks and seeing the ball sail straight through the middle on a couple of hard shots was a wonderful sight to see. Lachie Plowman kept Toby Greene goalless and was influential in our win, with 10 touches, 7 marks and an incredible 10%ers he is so pivotal to our defence. Caleb Marchbank was another link in our incredibly well performed defensive chain, he had 18 touches, 7 marks, 4 tackles, 3 1%ers and 4 inside 50's. Patrick Cripps had a quieter day, but his bullocking performance in the midfield didn't go unnoticed, running over a GWS player and booting it forward was one highlight of the day, he had 21 touches, 4 clearances, 5 tackles and 2 inside 50's. Jacob Weitering had 14 touches, 6 marks, 4 rebound 50s, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50's and the all important clearing kick out of defence on the siren. Jed Lamb did okay in his return match, kicking a goal and having 15 touches against his old side, he'd be happy with 3 inside 50s and a goal assist. Jack Silvagni had 10 touches at 90% disposal efficiency laid a great tackle in the forward half and went back and slotted a goal from it, laid 3 tackles, had 3 inside 50's and generally worked hard. Charlie Curnow had a couple of influential flicks and knocks but could only manage 9 touches, 3 marks, 4 tackles and a missed shot on goal. Zac Fisher was limited with 12 touches, 1 rebound 50 and 1 inside 50, but had a game high 22 pressure acts and kicked the winning behind. Tom Williamson played his role out of defense with 10 touches and 2 rebound 50's but can produce more. Liam Sumner was quiet in his third game of the season only managing 9 touches, 2 1%ers, 2 inside 50's and a goal assist.

I heard today that Weitering has played 31 games.

Wtf, already?

These kids are being seriously fast tracked, that's for sure.
Weiterings development has been huge, already at 260 AFL Ratings points, Plowman who has played 19 more games is only a handful ahead. The Ratings points are done off of a 40 game rolling average which mean Wetiering's ratings should spike over the next nine games as he closes in on the 40 game mark. I expect its more than possible he will be at 300 rankings points come round 21/22 this year. A rating of 300 would make him firmly in the top 20 KPD"s in the competition.

Love your work FBI. I think it's worth mentioning the fact that Zac Fisher had a game high 22 pressure acts on the weekend. Crucial little things that very easily go unnoticed.

Much like Cuningham at the end of last year, Fish has been rewarded for the defensive side of his game. Soon enough the attacking side will come with confidence and physical development and we'll be adding another tough two way midfielder to the list.
Yum.

FBI, small suggestion, it might be easier if you created labels in the legend. Like below.

Plus maybe change the colour of one of Series 3/4.

upload_2017-6-15_12-16-4.png

Also, small note but you've labelled GWS as North Melb in your recent update.

EDIT: one last one....maybe change the range to not include rounds not played. The 0 values (and the tapering into) distorts the chart readability....

Hope you don't mind the suggestions, I LOVE THIS THREAD!

I've never been so excited about a young Carlton team. I look forward in 33 games time looking back through this thread.

I will say that little Zaccy Fisher excites me nearly more than most. Flying under the radar atm, flashing in and out but when it clicks he will be such a damaging inside outside footballer. He is a natural. Clean hands, lower centre of gravity, exceptional spatial awareness and vision and high end hand and foot skills.

Cheers Ferris, for some reason i cant get the labels to work properly on excel but will try again and if not will just photoshop them in.

Will update for GWS and will try and look at fixing up the falling away to 0 element

Cheers

I can't like this post enough. Watching Sunday's game I thought at 3/4 time Fisher would be given a rest for this week. He was excellent in the last quarter when the game was on the line (despite the miss). Just has a lot of composure and clean hands with a nice left foot kick, very rarely wastes a disposal. A very "busy" player. I'm really confident on this guy long term.

Some nice suggestions, I was thinking the same thing about the labels.

I wouldn't mind having the opposition team's abbreviation under each round too.

Love it otherwise!

Long (long) time lurker, first time poster.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the effort and good work here, especially to you FBI - it's my favourite thread.

In addition to seeing our team grow before our eyes on the field, I look forward to the updates here after every game to see our team grow by the numbers.

Based on our growth rate in the first 33 games of the reset, the next 33 are looking to be extremely exciting - can't wait to see these numbers to continue to shoot up!!

Keep up the great work! :)

Fantastic work FBI!!

Would it be possible if you can show us a graph of all rounds since you started collecting the data? Eg 22 rounds last year and the 12 so far this year? Will be interesting to see the trend lines rebuild to date.

... of course if it's not too much trouble! :)

You're on the same wavelength as me, i've been keeping a running graph to bus out at our halfway mark, will be up this afternoon. Working on a post now.

Like others, I lurk a lot, and love this thread! Great work to all the contributors, especially FBI. Really loving the rebuild. Although i must admit I liked it when we were flying under the radar, but the progress has been so good it looks like the media are catching up to us, albeit 33 rounds late... But back to it. Go (baby) BLUES!

Halfway-Review - Glass Half Full??
33 Games into a 66 Game Rebuild

2016

At the start of the 2016 season, the Navy Blues were in one of our lowest ebbs since the early 2000's, coming off a wooden spoon the Club couldn't dip any lower. In that ebb, we looked up. From the bottom of a valley, winding stairs up the mountain side could be seen. Brendan Bolton was brought in as the Coach and he established the journey, leading the Blues on a trail up from our nadir to supremacy in the AFL once again.

For Round 1 2016 we had 25 players under the age of 24, some had just been brought in, the promising No.1 pick Jacob Weitering, first round picks Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow, GWS recruits Liam Sumner and Lachie Plowman. We had some established youth, Patrick Cripps, Sam Docherty.

In 2016 that youth was incredibly inexperienced. On average, each of those 25 players had only played 11 AFL games, and that's including Sam Docherty's 48. At that point in time Plowman had played 20, Cripps 23, Ciaran Byrne 1 games, and our 2015 draftees hadn't debuted. There was understandably a long way to go.

In 2016 we pumped games into the kids Sam Docherty (22) Cripps, Kerridge (21), Weitering (20) Plowman (19) Lamb (15) Graham (12) Byrne, Buckley (11) Silvagni (8) Boekhurst (7) Curnow (6) Gorringe (4) Cuningham (3) Whiley, Jaksch (1). That took our youth up to an average of 18 games per kid, but importantly, a few players established themselves as best 22 including Weitering and Plowman.

But it was also a teething period, we were playing kids and seeing their weaknesses, Lamb and Kerridge played a lot of games but didn't take their careers by the scruff of the neck. This period was all about exploration and development.

In the first half of 2016 there was consistent youth presence in our side throughout, with an average of 8.6 "kids" selected every week, the highest number of youth we took into a game was the Round 4 loss to the Western Bulldogs, the least amount of youth we took into a game was the Round 7 and 8 wins against Collingwood and Port Adelaide. In our Wins we averaged 8.1 "kids" per game and in our losses we averaged 9.2 "kids".

In the second half of 2016 the Carlton Football Club played 16 youth players over the course of the last 11 games of the year. Four of those players were integral parts of every game. Injuries to Ciaran Byrne and Charlie Curnow were unfortunate, as were minor injuries to Kerridge, Sumner, Boekhurst and Lamb. Regardless Carlton played on average 9.3 youth players per week, a noticeable rise on the roughly 8.6 played across the seasons first 11 games.

2017

At the start of 2017 we made harsh cuts to our list. The likes of WHiley, Smith and Rainbow found themselves jettisoned from the ongoing journey. We hit the draft hard again, Samo Petrevski-Seton was taken at #6, but we also hit gold with our later picks, Tom Williamson, Zac Fisher and Harrison Macreadie all came in and played games. In addition we added Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett through trades, building our youth brigade even further.

Our youth numbers jumped form 25 to 29 even after the cuts, making almost three quarters of our playing list sitting under 24 years of age. We put games into the kids from round 1. In 2017 thus far the kids have played: Cripps, Docherty, Plowman, Marchbank (11) Silvagni, Petrevski-Seton, Curnow (10) Williamson (9) Fisher (7) Macreadie (6) Pickett, Graham (5) Smedts (4) Cuningham (3) Kerridge, Sumner (2) Lamb, Polson (1).

Marchbank, Silvagni, Curnow, Petrevski Seton and Williamson have established themselves as best 22 players, and the rest have managed to show promise at AFL level. It's so promising to see this from the boys, and undoubtedly we are sticking to the rebuild and doing it well.

MIDWAY GRAPH.png

Halfway through the rebuild and out progress looks like the above. By the halfway point in our Rebuild we are progressing on two out of three metrics. The simplest metric, number of youth played is steadily rising. We started Round 1 2016 with 8 kids in our side, as of 2017 we are averaging 12. Breaking our personal record we had 14 players under the age of 24 in the side in 10 before the bye. This number just continues to build, each player who establishes themselves as Best 22 quality adds another step in the rebuild, the likes of Marchbank and Silvagni are markers we, as supporters, can look to and say - that is where the improvement is coming from, this is where we are going, on the backs of these men.

The SEN Player Ratings have stayed steady, using a trend line we are practically perfect flat at approximately 5 SEN Ratings Points per player per game. Ultimately we want this number to increase, we debuted a lot of kids this year so that goes a long way to explaining steadier returns but we will want to see that number rise to 6 or more by the end of the rebuild. By 2018 these kids will be the ones carrying us to wins, and the stats will reflect that.

The AFL Player Ratings are our most impressive metric, it's almost a foregone conclusion, as ratings will inevitably rise as kids play games, but the level we are growing at is very impressive if i say so myself. Look below to see a projection for our AFL Player Ratings across the remainder of the Rebuild.

MIDWAY GOLDLINE.png

The above is the "gold-line" our projected progression in terms of AFL Ratings Points. It's important to remember that the influx of draftees dips the AVG at the start of every season, this gold line is made off the back of two "down periods", in Rounds 1-12 2016, and 2017 where draftees were introduced with 0 AFL Ratings Points and one "up period" where those players have got some games under their belts like the 2016 games 12-22. We will get a better projection at the end of this season with another "up period" in the back half of this season. At this point in time, the line projects out to around a 230 AVG AFL player Ratings, for reference, that means that by the end of this season, the average youth player in our team should be playing at the level of Lachie Plowman or Jacob Weitering as they were at the start of this season. Knowing how impressive those two players are, it shows great promise for our kids by the end of the season. In reality, i think that number will be closer to 270 AVG by the end of 2018, and i am salivating at the thought. Bring on 2019.

Player Reviews after 33 Rebuild Games

Patrick Cripps - AFL Rating (230-487.7) Games Played (55)
  • Crippa is simply a phenom, it is so hard to chose his best game for the Blues, he's our highest rated player in the AFL player ratings points and has broken so many records. Potentially his best game was against Sydney in 2016 in Round 18, he had 9 SEN votes, 6 coahces votes and "put in a phenomenal physical effort. He's superhuman, honestly, 32 disposals, 22 contested, 4 marks, 1 contested mark (a beauty by the way, one hander on the forward flank I think) 11 clearances! and an astonishing 13 tackles, what a freak".

Sam Docherty - AFL Rating (303-431.7) Games Played (81)
  • Sam Docherty has had so many great games for the Blues, he regularly picks up coaches votes for being one of the best players on the ground. He has picked up 9 coaches votes on two occasions, against West Coast at the G in 2016 and last week against GWS. his game last week was probably his best for the Navy Blues. He had 9 SEN votes, 9 Coaches votes and "5 touches, 74% efficiency, 12 marks, 1 clearance, 5 tackles, 2 1%ers, 8 rebound 50's and 4 inside 50's, the man is simply brilliant, he had complete control of this game, it was his to do with as he pleased setting up our attacks from defence, even with Nick Maxwell in the zone".

Jacob Weitering - AFL Rating (0-262.6) Games Played (31)
  • Jacob has never played in the VFL, he has played almost every game since Round 1 when he was drafted and is developing so nicely. His best game was probably Round 3 in 2016, where he had 1 Coaches vote, 8 SEN votes and got nominated for the Rising Star, he "as Carlton's best player on the night, scoring a coaches vote and the nomination for th NAB AFL rising star award. The young blue had 26 disposals, took 9 marks and laid 2 tackles in a composed display showing signs of true leadership and endeavor".
Dylan Buckley - AFL Rating (158-129.8) Games Played (38)
  • Bucks's development has definitely gone backwards, he hasn't got a look in this year and Williamson and co seem to have gone past him. His best game during this period was probably his game in ROund 19 last year where he "bobbed up big, his run and carry and his presenting on the wing and flank were top notch, he had 19 disposals, kicked a goal, took 7 marks and had 3 1%ers, another good performance since his return".
Lachie Plowman - AFL Rating (82.9-279.4) Games Played (50)
  • Plowman has now played 50 games and the ones he's played for us have been really impressive. He's an essential part of our rebuild down back. His best game for the Blues was Round 3 this year where he had 8 SEN votes, and showed he is "one of the best defenders in the AFL right now - period. He had 18 disposals at 94.4% efficiency he looked a class above off of half back. He had 6 marks, two contested marks, 3 rebound 50's and 6 1%ers".

Sam Kerridge - AFL Rating (107-145.4) Games Played (50)
  • Sam Kerridge has improved slightly but not at any significant level. Kedge's best game may have come in his second game for the Blues where he had 7 SEN Votes, and "continued to show his worth picking up 22 disposals and scoring 2 goals".
Nick Graham - AFL Rating (104-141.6) Games Played (33)
  • Graham has still only played 33 games and is still relatively young but would want to do more. His best game has probably been Round 7 this year where he had 7 SEN votes, and I thought he "had been underrated since he has come back in and continues to play really solid football. He had 19 disposals, 10 marks on a wing and half forward, 5 tackles, 2 inside 50's and a goal".
Blaine Boekhurst - AFL Rating (74-108.7) Games Played (18)
  • Boek is getting a game this week and i'll be excited to see him again. He's over the 100 in AFL ratings and if he continues to develop he may become a player yet. His best game for the Blues was probably Round 19 2016 where he had 6 SEN votes and i wrote that he "continues to double grab the ball, im hoping this is a result of his glove and not a lack of touch, but he worked his way into the game, providing some quality run, 20 disoposals at 80% eff is very promising, he will be happy with his two inside 50's and his goal assist".
Liam Sumner - AFL Rating (12-110.5) Games Played (30)
  • Sumner has made some really good progression with us, he's beyond 100 AFL ratings but needs to do so much more, he's injured now but let's hope he gets more games this season. His best game was against Collingwood inRound 15 where he had 6 SEN votes, I must have disagreed with SEN because I wrote that he had "limited impact with only 6 possessions but placed excellent defensive pressure at time, laying 4 tackles and earning 3 free kicks for".

Ciaran Byrne - AFL Rating (12.5-89.9) Games Played (12)
  • Byrne's knee injury was gut-wrenching he was developing so wll, almost at 100 after only 12 games. The Irishmen has so much talent. His best game was probably round 6 in a win against Essendon where he had 7 coaches votes and was "one of the Blues best with 18 disposals at 78% efficiency and importantly 5 marks, 2 rebound 50's and one inside fifty, his run was immense and showed extreme composure for a third gamer".

Jed Lamb - AFL Rating (63-93) Games Played (38)
  • Lamb has played 38 games now and it's now or never, only one this year but put in some performances last year. If anything, he's okay depth, comes in and does a job when needed, but we'd want to see more out of him to be a best 22 player. His best game was probably Round 15 against Collingwood 2016 where he had 7 SEN votes and "played an excellent game, 20 disposals, 80% eff, 7 marks and a goal in an impressive performance by the young man".

Jack Silvagni - AFL Rating (0-107.5) Games Played (18)
  • SOS has played 18 games, is over 100 in the AFL ratings points and is guaranteed best 22 for us moving forward. His best game was round 4 this year where he had 7 SEN votes and "14 disposals at 100% efficiency, 10 marks as he provided excellent link up play going forward, impressively he managed three goals including a ripper from outside fifty (with a lucky bounce) in a breakout game".

Daniel Gorringe - AFL Rating (46.6-28) Games Played (10)
  • Gorringe has been a last resort player only, he only played a few games last year and none this year. His best game was his second for the Blues where he had 5 SEN votes and did "nothing to hurt his chances so far, his 14 disposal, 3 clearances and 6 1%ers told the tale of a fairly good game, his 2 goals were a lovely added bonus on top of that".

Charlie Curnow - AFL Rating (0-102.1) Games Played (16)
  • He's developing so well, over 100 AFL ratings points now in only 16 games. His best game for the Blues would have been Round 6 this year where had had 7 SEN votes, where he "into the midfield and I love it, he had 14 disposals, 6 marks, 2 contested marks including a Kouta like grab between two defenders on the wing and delivered the ball inside 50 twice, he is making a case to be considered for the rising star soon".

Kristian Jaksch - AFL Rating (37.2>18) Games Played (14)
  • Jaksch's AFL rating has actually decayed, he hasn't played this year so his best game during the Rebuild era was his only game in 2016. In that game Jaksch had 3 SEN votes, and "struggled in the first half with out complete lack fo forward structure, swung back late and performed admirably down there, he had 8 disposals, 2 marks and 2 inside 50's, he will benefit from the return of Cabsoult and a bit me structure to the forward line".

David Cuningham - AFL Rating (0-51.6) Games Played (6)
  • Cunners' best game was last weekend, the kid has doen well in 6 games of footy, pushing his ratings points up to over 50, almost averaging 10 per game, last week he picked up a Rising Star nomination, had 6 SEN votes and had "19 possession, 5 marks, 2 inside 50 and 2 goal game. He's got so many tricks and seeing the ball sail straight through the middle on a couple of hard shots was a wonderful sight to see".

Billie Smedts - AFL Rating (16.9-25.9) Games Played (42)
  • Billie Smedts has played 42 games, that is astounding, how is his AFl Ratings points so low?? I don't know, maybe because he is a limited footballer, his best game for Carlton came in round 2 where he had 5 SEN votes, where he "showed he can make things happen with his run and carry, he had 16 disposals 1 mark, 1 clearance and 3 tackles".

Caleb Marchbank
- AFL Rating (37>97.6) Games Played (18)
  • Caleb Marchbank has played 11 Games for the Blues, taking his career total to 18. The young key defender has increased his AFL rating by 60 odd points playing as a lock down defender who can get off and intercept. His best game for the Blues came in Round 6 2017. Marchy picked up 8 SEN Ratings Points, was nominated for the Rising Star and had "21 possession game which included 10 marks, 3 rebound 50's, 2 1%ers and 4 inside 50's from the back half".
Jarrod Picket - AFL Rating (0>16.3) Games Played (5)
  • Jarrod Picket has played 5 game sin his AFL career and all for the Blues, he's grown his rating to a disappointing 16.3, there is no doubt he needs to have more impact but hopefully that will come when his fitness increases. His best game came in Round 4 in our loss against the Gold Coast, he had 4 SEN Ratings points but "showed more run and should have finished a goal in front of Saad, only managing 9 disposals but kicked 1 goal".
Samo Petrevski-Seton - AFL Rating (0>79.3) Games Played (10)
  • Samo Petrevski-Seton has played 10 games for the Blues, debuting after no pre-season and building his AFL Rating to 79.3 in such a short period of time. Samo's best game came in Round 7 where he picked up 7 SEN Ratings points, got a rising star nomination and had "21 disposals, at 71% DE%. His moments in the match where astounding, he made kicks you wouldn't see from 99% of the competition, he had 3 clearances, 2 rebound 50's, 3 tackles, 2 1%ers, two beautiful goals and a goal assist to Casboult".
Tom Williamson - AFL Rating (0>53.6) Games Played (9)
  • Willo has played 9 games, looking at home at AFL level and currently holding 53.6 AFL player ratings points. Willo's best game so far has been Round 6 where he had 7 SEN votes, he "was so poised on the weekend, he ran through the center square like he was a class above, ignoring cheap passes to senior players calling for it and delivering it, lace out, to players forty metres ahead. Willo had 18 disposals, 4 marks, 5 1%ers and 2 rebound 50's".
Zac Fisher - AFL Rating (0>57.5) Games Played (7)
  • Fish has played 7 games being in and out of the side. His best game so far has probably been his debut where he had 5 SEN votes and "looked lovely on debut putting in some amazing effots to lay tackles and chase the ball. He has 12 disposals at 91% efficiency, 5 tackles and a brilliant goal".
Harrison Macreadie - AFL Rating (0>24.8 Games Played (6)
  • Macreadie was a gem of a pick up, talked about as a 1st round pick last year he managed to slip to us in the draft. His second AFL game saw him collect 6 SEN votes, he "rounded off the kids with another positive game. He didn't break any records but a one clanger game in ten possessions four marks and some key defensive acts will leave anyone happy with the effort of the second gamer".
Cameron Polson - AFL Rating (0>-0.4) Games Played (1)
  • Cam only played one AFL game this year, harshly he somehow ended up with a negative AFL Ratings Point, he "had a brilliant run down tackle but only found the pill 11 times and couldn't impact the game much".
