Be interesting to see how they fixture the games next year with a shorter season.

It's fine to throw out the line that the tournamant should be done by Australia Day however the sport and TV networks can't afford to give Tennis too much free air time. A shorter finals series will help but Cricket needs to keep up the content through until the end of the Australian Open.
At this stage, next year's season is part of the current broadcsting deal so the BBL will still be the same length. It won't be until 2024-25 that we have a shorter BBL season.

Next year is also a scheduling headache, the ODI world cup ends in late November. Then 3 tests against Pakistan from mid December to early Jan and then two tests against the Windies in late January. So that means no Australian players playing BBL next year.

Seriously lol. I think the scheduling "headache" is great. Means there is some red ball cricket in January ahead of resumption of the Shield.

The Sixers may make it mildly competitive for the Scorchers if they make it to the final, but if the Heat somehow sneak through it will be an absolute fizzer as their batting lineup looks horrendous without Khawaja, Renshaw and Marnus.

Actually not minding this season but still too long of a season. I know not much can be done about the scheduling but Jesus I’d love to see Indian players involved as well as more Pakistan players too.

These ‘star’ imports certainly don’t excite as much as the big wigs probably thought

Who the f is Matt Critchlsy? Sam Hain?

Those two weren't marketed as star imports.

Most of the star imports (Livingstone, Faf, Andre Russell, Pollard) either went undrafted (due to salary cap restrictions), pulled out completely or buggered off as soon as a higher paying gig in the UAE became available.

The Critchley, Hain etc.. type selections were made once the quality internationals were unavailable and teams got desperate to fill their international quotas rather than poach more grade cricketers.

And as long as the BBL remains salary cap contained (and CA controlled entities), it will lose the big international players to Dubai and SA20 competitions.

The imports to have won titles in the last few years are Colin Munro, Laurie Evans, James Vince, Carlos Brathwaite, Harry Gurney and Colin Ingram.

Most of those guys could walk the streets of their hometown without being recognised, let alone recognised in another country.

So the question is, do you want "stars" or do you want solid players who contribute to wins?

5 teams making the finals in an 8 team comp is way too many, especially if the comp is going to be shortened. 3rd to 5th this year didn't even have a winning record or positive NRR, just the best of a bunch of mediocrity.

ABC podcast suggested 3 teams, 2 vs 3 then winner of that vs 1, with the final being best of 3.

It's ridiculous, 56 games to eliminate 3 teams. Talk about rewarding mediocrity.

I'd like a 3 team finals series along the lines of what you've mentioned but that probably means there's going to be more dead rubber games towards the end of the season.

yeah couldn't agree more.

heat nearly pinched this season's BBL, after being on the bottom of the ladder 20 days ago.

it's a tough one, because crowds won't go, if teams aren't in contention for the finals.

our odi tri-series use to have 15 games (on occasions), just to eliminate 1 team !

the 2015 odi world cup had 42 matches before getting down to sudden death quarter finals (we all knew which 8 were going to be left standing) - well bangladesh made it instead of england.

end of the day the BBL is a domestic competition and is just some light entertainment for me and i still don't have an affiliation with any side.
i just take it for what it is, and understand that international players are coming and going and 'some' test players get released to play a handful of games etc and teams need a bit of luck to see who is 'available' come finals time.

Less is more in T20. I stopped watching halfway through the season.

We need more shield cricket.
More Shield cricket? Why?

Our test team is doing fantastically well. That should be the barometer of a healthy Shield. It has little point in and of itself - more people would be watching the division 6 game at my local oval.

And you may feel less is more, but 60,000 people attending the final would disagree.

We may be the best, but for how long? When does the obsession with BBL come into impacting the test sides potential?

I think the whole system is precariously complacent.

When the BBL gets bigger crowds and interest than the test side.

It's a concern, but its reality.
With the exception of the Ashes and India, the BBL is a bigger part of the summer cricket calendar than any test series.

Our test cricket team is going to hit a wall

Warner and Usman over 35
Smith is over 30
Hazelwood is coming to the end
Starc is over 30
Lyon is over 30

Green Labs Head Cummins Carey are the only ones here in 2 years

Smith will still be playing in 2 years, and there's every chance Lyon, Starc & Hazlewood are going around. Considering Lyon and Starc don't play IPL. Look at Jimmy Anderson still bowling well at 40

Anderson isn't breaking down like Hazelwood on his 3 injury in 2 years
Smith has injuries i hope he's still there but he has had a niggling hip injury
Starc depends on injuries
Lyon could be but i hope he is replaced in the next two years surley one of the younger spinners comes on

Aren't we decades into T20 by now?

There's exactly the right amount of Shield cricket happening now. It's similar to preseason games - helping development and getting folks in form.

We have to just recognise that it's a developmental comp and doesn't hold any value beyond that.
