Yeah went this year on Gold Coast. Saw Calling All Cars, Cage The Elephant, Boy And Bear, The Amity Affliction, a little of The Living End and My Chemical Romance, Mariachi El Bronx, (most of) Kasabian, Soundgarden, Noel Gallagher and a little bit of Kanye at the end from the hill cause he was so late. Also heard just a couple songs from Stonefield & The Hiltop Hoods at the very end of their sets.

Calling All Cars were phenomenal, brilliant interaction with crowd. They gave the crowd a cymbal, part of the drum set and drum sticks. Two lucky fans got to hit the drums and cymbal. Won over the crowd, really good atmosphere by the end. Small moshpit developed in the end. Brilliant performers although the lead singer stripped at the end which was confronting. Shame that they don't have a bigger fan base because they put on one hell of a show.

Mariachi El Bronx were amazing. Like Calling All Cars they totally won the crowd over. Very small crowd at first with most sitting down against the fence to the side of the stage but by the end almost everyone was dancing and the crowd grew at an alarming rate. Very good performance, I couldn't wipe the grin off my face after their set.

The Amity Affliction were good too I thought. Great crowd atmosphere but I think vocals were a little inconsistent, great at times and average at others. They were late by 10-15 mins and pretty sure they cut their set down by 1 or 2 songs - they only played 7 - but the crowd were all into it which made it great i thought. The mosh was much bigger/more dangerous/better than I expected it to be. Short but very intense set. Highlights included the pit instantly opening up when they came out singing I Hate Hartley and the whole crowd yelling "**** the reaper" during Youngbloods.

Kasabian were brilliant and got literally the whole crowd in front of the blue stage moving around. Unfortunately since I was busy getting a spot up the front for Soundgarden I didn't get to fully appreciate their set with the rest of the crowd.

Soundgarden were pretty good too but didn't have the same crowd atmosphere as Kasabian. Loud Love, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, Fell on Black Days, Burden in my Hand still went down very well with me. Good set list and Chris Cornell coming into the crowd at the end was a nice touch.

I thought Cage The Elephant were pretty good but not great. The atmosphere was good but I didn't really like the vocals, although admittedly I'm not really a fan. I give credit to the lead singer who was clearly 'out of it' but still managed to repeatedly crowd surf. Quite funny when he said his wish was that if he got knocked unconscious because the crowd dropped him that he wanted his body to be passed around the crowd for the rest of the set.

Boy & Bear were very good and well received by the crowd. Made subtle changes to their sound which for the most part worked pretty well I thought. The occasional guitar solo was thrown in and some slightly heavier drumming ensured they sounded a bit different live. Quality vocals.

Noel Gallagher was good, glad he rarely opened his mouth and just got on with playing. The 3 or 4 Oasis songs he played were very well received by the crowd. Don't Look Back in Anger got a brilliant reception as the closing song with just about the whole crowd singing along. Good performance.

My Chemical Romance disappointed me greatly but only heard about 5 songs before I went to M.E.B. I'm not a huge fan but I really expected more. They opened with Na na na na and I'm not Okay which are 2 of my favourites but didn't enjoy them because I thought the singing was poor.

I went to the first four in Sydney then took a hiatus when they moved it out to Homebush.

I went back again in 2005 to see The Stooges and have been to every Melbourne BDO (as a photographer) since 2006 and will be off there again on Sunday.

1992 was the start of something special, as a festival it is much less adventurous with the acts they book these days but there is still always some quality on the bill if you know where to look.

Haven't bothered to go since 1994. Too many cookie cutter/bland bands that I am either not into or have never heard of.

Even the appearance of The Jesus Lizard and The Stooges on past bills wasn't enough. Its good value for money for what it is I guess.

I'd much rather have something like 'All Tomorrow's Parties' here or 'Chaos In Tejas' here (fingers crossed)

Is Elvis coming out of retirement to play there?

Music hasn't been the same since he retired.

First year I went was 99 and its still the best lineup since ive been going. Korn, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Soulfly, Ash, Fun Lovin Criminals, Manic Street Preachers, plus a great Aussie lineup of Regurgitator, Powderfinger, Superjesus, Jebediah, Living End, TISM, Sonic Animation all when they were at their best. Some great boiler room bands in Fatboy Slim, Roni Size, Underworld.

Comical end to the day though. Hole came on, at the start of the third song, Courtney Love got bitten by a 'bug', threw a tantrum and ran off stage. The band played a song with the guitarist singing, then went off stage for 10 minutes. They came back on, Love yelled 'one of your aussie bugs bit me' they played half of Celebrity Skin and went off stage to a barage of bottles. Then everyone went to see Fatboy Slim in the boiler room and someone decided to lock the doors so noone else could get in. Issue being that they locked the door on the outside meaning that people inside couldnt get out for 20 minutes. Ludicrous!!

Well for all the whinging about the lineup etc that was probably the best Big Day Out I've gone to. Not sure if it was the good crew I was with, the crowd being less ********y than usual, the weather being less hot than usual or keeping myself a bit above 0.05 all day but every band I saw seemed to put on a very good show (with the odd exception).

After the fun of changing trains on the way up and drinking to excess we wandered in and watched Papa vs Pretty for a bit from the orange side of the stage. They were enjoyable enough, cover of Bullet for Butterfly Wings was pretty cool and recognised a couple of other songs. But really at this point of the day I was just in anticipation of Frenzal Rhomb

And they didnt disappoint. Great live band, tore through a mixture of the old (Genius, **** the System, There's Your Dad etc) and the new (Bird Attack, When My Baby Smiles at Me I go to Rehab and more) and the singalong of Never Had So Much Fun and You Cant Move Into My House. Banter between songs as good as ever, great show and my mates who I dragged along to them enjoyed it as well, which was nice.

Watched Parkway Drive after that. I quite like their first album, not so much after that, but I really enjoy their live show. You see alot of bands that don't give a shit, stand their and play and expect the crowd to give them energy, well Parkway gets everyone involved. Plus dancing like a ****wit can be pretty fun with them playing.

Wandered out of the main arena after that, watched a bit of an unearthed band, went back to grab drinks and had to cop a small amount of Boy and Bear, rubbish band and their butchering of 'Fall at Your Feet' grates me.

Then went to the Hot Produce are to watch King Cannons. Possibly the set of the day. Heard a couple of songs on the radio, Teenage Dreams the big one, but the crowd just swell as everyone grooved along to their Springsteen/Clash inspired rock n roll/punk sound. Cracker of a set and will be trying to source more of their music.

Was meant to meet up with friends at the Essential Stage after that but misread map and ended up the wrong area completely, so by the time I got their the Vaccines had already begun. They were enjoyable for the twenty odd minutes I watched. Went over to watch The Living End after that.

TLE are the band which got me into a lot of better music, their first album is one of my favourites but I was apprehensive seeing them, knowing their last few albums have been pretty mediocre. Boy, they still put on a great show. Chrish Cheney is an excellent guitarist and the energy that went in from them was great. Prisoner of Society is still one of the great live songs, cover of Breed was thrown in, Waltzing Matilda was nicely done and the closer of West End Riot a cracker.

Ran into some friends again who were getting their spot for Kanye, just as My Chemical Romance started on the Orange Stage. So I left and met up with others over at the Green stage, cruised around for a bit with them then went and watched Kasabian. I thought they were really good live. Kept the hits coming, underdog, Vlad the Impaler and the absolute cracker of a finisher in Fire amongst them. Really enjoyed their set.

Pushed up the front to meet up with our other mates again and wait for Kanye, with Soundgarden on the other stage. Heard some dick behind saying "Soundgarden are shit why would they headline?" Im not a massive fan of theirs in any way but it's that complete ignorance of the last twenty years of music that is just ridiculous from certain people. After about 20 minutes of waiting I thought im not hanging around another hour for some ****wit rapper from America and got out of the front row, watched a bit of Soundgarden from the back. They were the opposite of Parkway, Just sort of stood around playing their instruments and not giving much to the audience. Not bad but nothing special.

Decided to wander over to see who the special guests on the Essential stage were, turned out to be Grinspoon. Thought i'd watch them for a bit then check out Kanye. Well Grinspoon was brilliant on the day. Phil was highly intoxicated, the band was tight and the setlist good. First half of the set had some of the newer ones plus ready 1 but the second half was nostalgia overload. Pedestrian, More Than You Are, a sing along to Chemical Heart and a final three songs of Just Ace, Champion and DCx3, awesome. The vibe around the crowd during the set was brilliant, everyone just really enjoying themselves, the band playing really well, loved it. Only Black Friday could've improved the set.

So wandered over to watch Kanye West after that. Everyone was lapping it up, my mates up the front said it was amazing. I thought it was self indulgant wank, with his style over substance performance epitomising what I dislike about aspects of modern music. The middle section where he was doing his stuff off 808's and Heartbreaks was laughibly woeful, autotune rubbish, yet it was getting lapped up. I actually burst out laughing during that bit. Had to go spend my precious last dollars on beers to get through abit of it. Just reinforced that the difference between Kanye and God is that God doesnt think he's Kanye.

So after watching a bit of the show I decided to go watch some music again. With my last beer of the day it was time for Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds. I was hoping for a sort of half half set between solo and Oasis, but **** it was a good show anyway. Good band, good song writing, he seemed to be enjoying himself on stage. Got a bit of the Timmy Rogers about him, changing guitar every song. Little by Little was thrown in the mix amongst some good sounding solo stuff. Someone asked for Champagne Supernova "If you havent heard it yet you're too ****en late buddy." So he's cruising through his set and then this happens

And the crowd loses their minds. Absolutely amazing, what a way to finish a day.

Best BDO I've been to. Kind of wish I didnt smash so much money over the bar but a great day.

Good review and I'm glad you enjoyed yourself.

Just a point on Soundgarden, I saw them live on Wednesday night in Sydney.

No fancy light show.
No jumping around on stage.
Hardly any banter between songs.

There was a projection on a screen behind the left of the stage but nothing relevant was on it.

I ****ing loved it. When your music stands up by itself 4 blokes can just wander out play their songs for 2 hours and then walk off. And it can be one of the greatest experiences of your life.

They obviously aren't really your cup of tea so I understand your indifference to them. Sound like you had a great day though and getting a bit too pissed is just part of the fun. ;)

Yeah, like I said i'm not a big fan of theirs anyway, I thought they played pretty well and Cornell was getting into it but it was just a tad dull. I do appreciate when bands concentrate on the music side rather than the lights and stage show

I went the next year which was the first time they toured it through Australia. Lineup was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Cosmic Psychos, Hard-Ons with Jerry A from Poison Idea and Hoss. Well they were the bands I remember watching. It belted down in Melbourne and just as Iggy took the stage there was a massive thunderstorm. Amazing spectacle - Iggy taking the stage with lightning bolts in the background.

i think Matt Belamy has said a total of 10 words for the three times ive seen them live.

yeah look I haven't seen Muse live and they aren't really my cup of tea but respect for letting their music do the talking.

I've seen The Flaming Lips and you know that going to see them the stage show is an important part of the gig as well as ingesting copious amounts of drugs to understand it but their music sounds just fine without all the other stuff.

But I just prefer a band to get on stage and play, like Iggy and the Stooges did after Rammstein and Tool had their "effects" shows at last years BDO, like Grinderman did straight after. Like Ween do for 3-4 hours every time they play. Like Sonic Youth and The Pixies do. I really don't want to hear some **** preaching to me about their belief system in between songs I'm paying for LIVE music.

But each to their own.

Reading all the media on the event, it will struggle next year, either not running at all or just staying to maybe Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. It is clear they lost money on the event this year and the change in venue in some places didn't help.

As for Gallagher, the man is a genius. Saw him at the Enmore last Monday night with the full set and he was sensational.

Yeah, BDO seems to be in a real limbo. They attract some big names, but the lineup seems all over the place. They have no real target demographic (unlike those metal festivals or Laneway). It's a pity, but it's just the economic climate.

Has anyone seen Odd Future? What were they like?

All tomorrow's parties would be insane. We're so isolated etc we really just have to take what we can get.

I'm not a fan of festivals so don't usually go anyway.

Yeh, this is is the overriding feeling at the moment with regards to the Big Day Out.

This is the first year since 2009 I haven't attended and although there are a number of artists I would have been quite keen to see, it just looks to have fallen in a heap this year. The $180 asking price is more than exhorbitant and given they've loaded up on local acts, most of which you can see cheaply at sideshows anyway, it just wasn't worth it for me.

They seem to load up on buzz-bands and perenial JJJ favourites and I guess the two are pretty well entwined which also polarises people.

Great memories though. Always a decent atmosphere.

And I got to see Battles last night :thumbsu:

We had an awesome ATP at Mt Buller in 2009, unfortunately not enough people turned up which was fantastic for those who went but terrible for the organisers.

I saw Odd Future today and they were the worst live act I have ever seen. Utter garbage.

Yes the BDO looks like they have lost their way, they built their brand on booking edgy and interesting acts or absolutely legendary acts (Neil Young and The Stooges spring to mind). I'm still scratching my head as to why Kanye was the headliner.

Today Soundgarden were absolutely sensational, Cage The Elephant and The Vaccines impressed. I liked Stonefield and Abbe May, The Living End put on a great show (not my thing but they always put on a show), Kasabian sounded good but their performance was pedestrian. Cavalera Conspiracy were OK as were Parkway Drive, Amity Affliction and Noel Gallagher. And it was ****ing hot!

tell me more?

Two day festival curated by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds featuring a Saints reunion with Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper, Spiritualized, Dirty Three, Grinderman, Bad seeds, Dead Meadow, Hoss, Rowland S Howard and more.

It was held in January 2009 at Mt Buller with one day shows in Sydney and Brisbane. Mt Buller was the best festival experience I've ever had.

Cornell was freakin' phenomenal. He's sounding as magnificent as he was 20 years ago. Bring on Wednesday night!

And the bass was fat and fantastic. I can't wait for Wednesday!
