BigFooty Official Big Footy Phantom Draft - Trial Run

Maybe I should wait for the writeup, but why the departure from your board with Ash, Stephens, Gould and Taheny still available?

The write up will explain it all. But I rate Finn a top 10 player and the big body midfielder appealed here.

I also like seeing where other people rate the SA kids.

Carlton - Pick 11 - Liam Henry

I hate picking players I know it is impossible to select, but he is certainly a need for the Blues.

Carlton have not had a real small forward since the loss of Garlett and Betts. Henry is close to the most gifted small forward in this draft class but what was the real impressive aspect of his game was his ability to move into the midfield. The game against Vic Country really showed his skill set. He has pace to burn and some of the best foot skills in his draft class, maybe not the Young level of penetration of kicking skills, but anything under 40m and he is a jet.
Amazing agility and just pure awareness in close.

The Dockers are a very lucky group being able to secure this kid and no doubt they will be hopeful he gets nominated after their first selection.
Having Flanders being selected before our pick was a real annoyance, he should be super high on our draft board. Flanders being a gun medium forward with inside midfielder ability. He has a few elements of Robbie Gray for me.

Pick #2 Adelaide - Noah Anderson 190cm 87kg Oakleigh Chargers

Thunder, I recognise that Anderson is well rated as the best available here, however I'd love to know how closely you considered Hayden Young.

Might just be my own thoughts but I think Young would compliment the inside mids at Adelaide effectively.

Well it was between two and to quote a recruiting cliche, “I can’t believe he’s still available”.

Pick 12
Port Adelaide
Dylan Stephens - Norwood

Reasoning to come

Pie 4 Life you’re up

Write up for my Finn Maginness pick. I know it'll be viewed as a reach, but I like him.

I've been super impressed with Finn Maginness this year, I think he's been one of the real improvers in the draft. I know full well nobody else would have picked him this early, but that's fine by me. I personally think he's deserving of a top 10 pick, even if it seems recruiters have him more in that 15-20 range at the moment. Which will please Hawthorn I'm sure.

One thing that works in his favour is the draft pool as a whole. Outside of Noah Anderson and Tom Green, there isn't another tall midfielder anywhere near the top of the draft. I personally consider Ash, Young and Gould to be defenders. And I feel that's where Kemp will develop too. So if a club wants some size in the midfield, Maginness is it.

But I do think Maginness is good enough to go this early too, it's not just a lack of other options. With his move into the midfield this year, he's improved pretty rapidly. And he looks a natural in at the stoppages, knows where to position himself and can get himself out of trouble without much difficulty. Has a nice little sidestep and just has that extra bit of time. He definitely doesn't win the ball purely due to his size. His hands in close are clean, and his kicking has also improved as the season has gone on. In a Championships full of pretty poor footskills, he had some really nice and important kicks. He's also an elite runner and can use that to push to the outside.

Over half his possessions have been contested so far this year, I'd like to see him get a chance to run and carry a touch more over the rest of the season. Just to show he has that side of his game, and show clubs he can be that damaging player too. Just that overall hurt factor is something he can display a bit more. Pushing forward and kicking goals as a midfielder will also be the next step in his development. But from all reports, he's a leader on the field and at training so I think he'll continue to only get better.

Gun to my head, if I have to make an AFL comparison for him I'll go with Jackson Macrae. Underrated, but super consistent and always improving.

So why would I pick him here? One look at my draft board shows that Dylan Stephens was by far my best available. But I like to see where others rate the SA kids, I talk enough about them already. But outside of him, I have Maginness as the next best midfielder - and as I said before, a midfielder with size like few others in this draft. And I want Fremantle to draft actual midfielders, not more short kids or flankers (outside of Liam Henry).

It is such an even draft.
A player selected is number 27 on my rankings (not McGuiness)
I reckon those who don't go by consensus will have diverse rankings in 2019.
Ash and Stephens great value early doors.

I’ll go best available in my eyes (has plenty of supporter and naysayers) but Richmond select Mitch O’Neill (Tasmania).

Full write up to come, but high ceiling, top user and versatile. Like him as a player. Highest on my board remaining.

Write up for Stephens:

Pick #12 - Port Adelaide
Dylan Stephens - Norwood
183 / 69 / LF / Outside Mid
My Ranking: 6

For Port its still all about skill level. Bringing in guys like Rozee and Butters with high impact with their disposals has helped, Drew getting games, Amon having a career best year, but still a long way to go. Still after all these years, Hinkley just can't get Port using the ball efficiently.

Had two options with this pick, one a completely different player, but it's hard to overlook the Victorian who was best available on my draft board. We lost Polec at the end of last season and with Stephens we have a very like for like replacement. An elite user of the ball with great endurance, good speed and the ability to just get himself to contest after contest. His left foot kick can cut you to pieces, he finds space with the ball and his efficiency is as good as anyones in this years draft. But, he's not just an outside receiver, his inside game is capable and his positioning around stoppages is very good. He's a hard runner, is an arc to arc mid that won't stop running and creating. He needs to improve his opposite side and he needs to hit the scoreboard more than what he currently does, but his score involvements are up there as consolation.

He was AA at the Champs, finishing 7th in disposals, 3rd in uncontested possessions and 10th in inside 50s. But most impressive has been his form in the SANFL for Norwood. He proved himself too good for SANFL reserves level with a 36 disposal, 12 clearance effort in Round 1 and has averaged almost 18 disposals and 4 inside 50's a game at senior level since. That sort of form, as a very slight kid, at senior level is exceptional.

With Duursma on one wing and Stephens on the other, the club now has two elite runners who can accumulate and use the ball going inside 50.

Throw out a carrot, trying to determine who is 27th now.

Considering you've ruled out Ash, Stephens, McGuiness.... I can only assume it might be Henry.

Round One

Pick 15. Gold Coast Suns.

Will Gould.

Medium Defender
Glenelg, South Australia.
191cm, 97kg.

Gold Coast are in need of quality mids. However I believe Gould is by far the best player on board right now, is ready to play now, and will slot straight in to Gold Coasts defence.

The most common AFL player comparison for Will Gould is Shannon Hurn from the West Coast Eagles.

Gould will be that big bodied general defender who can play either as a third tall, or rebounding defending who can play on medium or small forwards. He is a quality mark, and was the leading rebound player at the Under 18 Championships. Gould is capable of running the ball out of defence and delivering a 50 to 60 metre kick to advantage down the wing or inside 50.

Gould also bring leadership, and bolsters the Suns ever growing contingent of South Australians living on the Gold Coast.

Other players I considered for Gold Coasts second pick. I had hopped either Dylan Stephens #12 or Mitch O'Neill #13 would last to pick 15, providing Gold Coast with an inside outside mid, who could play on a wing or go in to a contest and win his own ball. Both players are seen more as long term prospects who would need to add some muscle before being considered for the first team.

The only other player I had on my list for this pick was Trent Bianco, a small rebounding defender who can also play wing, and win his own ball when required. However Gold Coast have a lot of sub 180cm players already, with another to come in academy prospect Connor Budarick, who will start as a small forward and eventually rotate through the midfield with 2016 number 4 draft pick Ben Ainsworth.

You guys will need to replace Cutler after all...
Form my limited viewing, Sharp shares all the "deficiencies" that is seeing Cutler not being picked for the first team.

So we're replacing Cutler with a younger version of himself. I don't mind a bit of FIGJAM in my players, but not when they haven't earned it.
