Following the passing of Mike Berry (Mr. Spooner) and of Candy Davis in 2021 (she played Miss Belfridge, Mr. Rumbold's bimbo secretary in the last two seasons of the show), by my reckoning there are only three regular/recurring cast members of Are You Being Served? still living today. These are Penny Irving, who played Young Mr. Graces's pretty secretary Miss Bakewell in the 1970s; Vivienne Johnson who played Young Mr. Grace's equally attractive nurse in the same era; and Doromy Vernon, who played the role of the abrasive and militant canteen manageress Mrs. Yardwick throughout the show's run.

Given that Penny Irving and Vivienne Johnson are both now octogenarians, and that while no date of birth is available for Doromy Vernon given that her career dates back to the early to mid-1960s and her age in AYBS she would have to be over 90 by now, it sadly won't be too long until all cast members cross over to the big department store in the sky.

On the subject of Penny Irving and Vivienne Johnson I thought they did a great triple act with the late Harold Bennett who played Young Mr. Grace, the three of them having natural comic timing together. I remember one episode where the elderly and infirm Mr. Grace was making a bit of a fuss about the blood pressure monitor his nurse was attaching to him, saying it was distracting. His nurse patiently explained that it was necessary to monitor for rises and falls in his blood pressure throughout the day, then enter his secretary wearing a short little summer dress and the monitor goes crazy, beeping repeatedly until it makes a continuous high-pitched noise.

Mike Berry's passing also leaves another TV show with just one living cast member, and this is Worzel Gummidge which ran from 1979 to 1981. Berry played Mr. Peters, the ne'er do well father of John and Sue, the kids who befriended the scarecrow and helped him on his adventures, with forgotten child/teenage actor Jeremy Austin who played John Peters now the last living cast member.

Jon Pertwee, Geoffrey Bayldon, Una Stubbs, Norman Bird, Meg Jenkins, Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor, Michael Ripper, Bill Maynard and now Mike Berry have all died; while Charlotte Coleman who played Sue Peters and had quite a promising acting career in the UK would tragically die at the age of just 33 in 2001 from complications of her chronic asthma.
