Bigman’s Training Reports

I've been reading these, many thanks Bigman from the broader football community, and Taylor's been one I'm fascinated by. He looked so good in his limited senior games but the reports have him unable to build a tank. It also seems that's been his problem since being on your list. Only beating Strachan in time trials this preseason is absurd for a player of his size.

Being the the B team suggests he's behind a few after this preseason but in the second quarter he was on the ball. If you can remember how did he look in that role?

The boy has something in terms of raw footy ability.

Then explain why successful clubs have and continue to do so like Geelong, Sydney and a lot of others as well?

Didn't Sydney get their 2022 grand final ruckman from the Eagles for what ended up being a future 2nd rounder and pick 62? Then they gave away another 2nd rounder to get their 2024 grand finalist ruckman (Grundy) all whilst having a backup that cost them moving 4 spots down from pick 12 to pick 16?

Geelong's last flag was won by a mature ruckman they got with a 2nd round pick.

Colliingwoods 2023 side was led during the year by a mature ruckman that they traded in for pick 56. Then during finals they lost their Key Forward so said F*ck it - lets put our ruckman up forward and let the donkey with Sunglasses ruck us all the way to a flag because ruckman simply dont matter.

Our best season in the past 27 years was led by having a ruckman that we acquired for pick 33 and pick 67.

I mean the 2016 Bulldogs won a flag and their best ruckman with the most hitouts for the year (and finals series) was Jordan Bloody Roughead.

He'll be 30 this year and has been carrying pretty close to 100% of the ruck load for the past 6 seasons. I suspect his body has probably had nearly enough. Sam Jacobs was the same in his last couple of seasons - he just could not get off the ground. You'd watch him at a centre bounce and he'd be positioning himself to try and get some body on opposition ruckmen who were able to get a bit of a run up and just jump over the top of him.

And it never needed to be that way. ROB and Sauce will both push to the goal square to ruck whilst the relief ruck JJ/TT is standing around waiting for a crumb. We have seen ROB dial it back a little the last couple of years, but the big galoot still pushes to 15m from the contest and hangs in no mans land instead of holding back, catching a little breath and being in a position where he might be useful if we lose the stoppage.

How bad can Taylors fitness be? He impacts when he is on the field. He kicked 3 goals against Sydney round 24 last year. He makes much more impact than Murphy.

When he is in the middle he doesn't panic, he assesses his surroundings and looks for the best options. So much talent needs to have time put into him. He would make my 23 easily. Saying this I know nothing about fitness levels required for AFL.

We might need to be on mutineer watch to see how those two rucks from Ballarat are going for the rebels during the season. If we lose a player long term they might despite their age be likely candidates

Off the top of my head I cannot think of anyone in the SANFL who would be capable of rucking at AFL level

Bicks list was very much bare for possible options. Lots of work to do this year to bolster our list in this department

And all the more reason we should always have a back up that is at least 3 - 4 years younger and a young developing ruck on our list. ROB is actually the only ruck we've developed in the last decade albeit drafted as a 19 year old off the rookie list.

Sorry I just don't get it re our list management.
I've said it before - our failure to recruit another ruck since Strachan is just outright negligence on the part of our list management staff. And Strachan is only 2 months younger than ROB, so even if he was up to AFL level we'd still have to be looking at replacing them both around the same time anyway.

At this point we're not in the market for a ruckman. We're in the market for at least THREE ruckmen. Like you said, a #1 option, an AFL ready backup, and a developing option - we need all 3.

Agree. It almost makes him funnier and more likeable as a player if he just hates training. However the training reports and the teams he's put on in match sims suggests he isn't in their starting 23.

Was there this same uproar last year?

Are posters just made because we lost Himmelburg and gained Murray? Or because Strahan got injured in December?

Did ROB die?

I get that he is not everyone's favorite ruckman, but the bloke had more hitouts than anyone last year.

You lot are getting completely hysterical. We have an average ruckman who is 29 years old and has not missed much footy. We haven't won a final in 7 years.

Are the Brisbane Lions fans having the same meltdowns?

It's been fairly widely reported. Others would be better placed to know who/how it has been confirmed.

There were other fast players in that draft though. Even if Ogilvie was given orders to pick a pacy mid type, as rumoured, it still does not absolve him of picking Gallucci over better options.

Rumours that he might be heading back to victoria next year.

Means we would need a replacement for ROB and Strachan plus a younger developing ruck

Can’t agree with that. Not sure why Chayce is the only one that’s received over coaching.
I think people need to realise that his level is what he’s put out the majority of his career.
He’s has more chances than anyone on the list over multiple coaches.

ButterMill I’m a big fan of Taylor but his lack of running ability does seem to be a sticking point for our coaches whether we like it or not. Personally I think it’s overblown - he’s definitely improved despite still being one of our worst, and the best players rarely make the best runners. I guess it’s more that he possibly hasn’t improved enough and that he still doesn’t do enough work in the offseason.

I’d be lying if I said he’s been training the house down. He’s had a couple of minor ankle issues and has only impressed in spits and spurts. He was decent again today particularly once moved out of the white graveyard forward line but he still doesn’t do as much as the other forward and mids that are ahead of him.

I do worry given he is out of contract this year. If we don’t sign him up early he may look to move for greater opportunities and I think whichever club nabs him will get a gem. You can’t teach his class.

ROB getting beaten by McAndrew is what I saw from last week too.
Super concerning.
Normally I would be unfazed given he’s basically a veteran at this point and it’s January.

But he hasn’t trained particularly well almost all summer. He’s struggled in the air and today seemed to let McAndrew get on top in hitouts.

Yes it’s still just pre season but Rob has been dropped multiple times over the last few years and is in a contract year. You’d hope he would be sizzling but he’s not.
