Phantom Draft Bishop's 2017 Draft Thread

They're pretty similar.

Though I reckon Bonar is more likely to just be a pure midfielder, whereas I think Cam will always be that fwd/mid or mid/fwd.

Bonar's forward work I reckon isn't as good as Cam's - but I project Bonar to be a better midfielder long term.
Yeah that's what I was thinking, Bonar doesn't seem to at least this year have shown the same ability hit the scoreboard hard like Cam has.

Did you see Bonar play prior to his injuries, or if not, have you heard whether he made his name playing mainly midfield, or wot?

Bishop you king.

What are our chances at Tigerland of getting,

Balta @ #17
Hayes @ #20
Naish @#25

And would you be happy with this?

Mostly midfield. Played some games there last year.

Pretty good chance. Yep I think that's a good haul

On Fogarty - 178.8cm, 75.5kg

Tackling machine, wins plenty of the football - good clearance/inside 50 numbers. Pretty clean right foot kick. Classy balanced midfielder. One who has flown under the radar.

As for comparisons, I refuse to do them. Not sure he'll ever win as much inside/centre bounce ball as Merrett, but I like him across half forward where he can pressure players and tackle.

Not sure why others don't rank him - but everyone rates players differently. I've had Coffield that high since the Champs. I'll back my judgement over others - so who have hardly seen Coffield play live.

Straight from the Inside Footy guide "Coffield appeals to AFL recruiters because he can play in most positions. Highly skilled, clean and athletic"

That's a pretty good summary - the concern will be over whether he will be able to win enough contested ball, but adding size will help that long term moving from a general defender to inside midfielder.
His workrate as a midfielder is poor especially his defensive running. Contested footy is also a question mark. I think you are drafting a talented Luke Ryan style defender the jury is out whether he can play midfield at AFL level for mine.

Bishop. looking at your May Power ratings, you rated Brander #1 .......what happened to your view of him in the 4 months since? ....he appeared to have an ok Championship?

How do you rate Brander now, and your thoughts on his AFL prospects ? ........is he too nice a player for a KPP?

If I didn't "win" this draft I don't know who has...

# 52 Richmond (received from Greater Western Sydney) - Nathan Murphy
# 66 Richmond - Aiden Bonar

Both players will go inside Top 10 I expect.

Bishop, interesting comment you made ......why has Murphy all of a sudden come from the clouds to be a potential Top 10 pick ......whats changed from a month ago?

I came into the year thinking he was a No.1 pick - I feel quite silly suggesting it to a club recruiter back in April!

I really liked his work as a defender last year and was hopeful of him having a full season there. He just hasn't had any continuity playing forward and back, especially in some very poor teams - which doesn't help with the delivery up forward.

His intercept marking is good and I hope clubs keep him down back when he gets drafted in the second half of the first round on draft night.

Don't think anyone on here even knew who he was when I took him in the Phantom Draft - but I suppose being "in the know" you've got a good understanding on where things sit.

Once he finished up at school footy, got to see him against the "best" in the TAC Cup and then through finals + All Stars game. Little glimpses + the draft combine results help push him up the order.

Collingwood always had an interest in him - they were the first to interview him. But I remember speaking to a club recruiter back in April who thought Dow was a top 5 pick, when most had him around 20s type of thing (draft followers).

Clubs always know more than "draft followers" just because they're spending 24 hours, 7 days a week focusing on it. So just because "journalists" don't talk about it, doesn't mean it can't happen.

What were Murphy's combine results that helped his cause?

Was more the fact it was the first time anyone had any results on him. Being a Victorian/Australian underage footballer meant clubs didn't have any data on him and he'd been doing everything gearing himself up for cricket.

His endurance results in the 2km time trial and the yo-yo test were impressive. Two areas that are pretty important.

St Kilda will take Murphy with one of their top 10 selections. Take it to the bank.

AFL clubs were urging Murphy to play TAC on the back of his school form in April/May.

Some nerdy dude on AFL Draft Central got wind of this, and it’s snowballed from there.

Bishop

Both times I've seen Callum Porter live he's impressed me with his hunger for the contest and hardness at the footy, really has a crack.
Don't hear his name mentioned much but on my limited exposure to him he looks to have attributes that translate well to AFL. Where do you see his place in this draft and are any particular clubs showing interest. I might add I put a heavy loading on players that can win their own ball consistently.

As a follow up to that. How important is the new Yo-Yo test to recruiters? What advantages does it have over the beep test?

How do you translate the findings to the approximate beep test ratings? How would a 21.5 is the equivalent to which beep test rating? Would Brayshaw, Moore, Bewley, and Giro be able to breach the 16 beep with their 22+ yo-yo?

Mid November
Cheers, so would that, combined with the fact he's within a couple of weeks of not being eligible till next year's draft, mean that he should just about be compared with next year's crop more than this year's, in terms of output/production?

And if so, where do you reckon he would rank out of next year's crop if he was that couple of weeks younger, based on what he's done this year and his attributes?

This may be true, but even as a half back he's well and truly worth the 5th ranking in this draft imo. Comfortable playing on talls and smalls, uses the ball meticulously and runs like the wind at 190. Shallowish pool you can't ask for much more, adding the midfield string to his bow would be a bonus.

Rookie to undrafted - think the Dogs have shown some interest. Size always a knock with the 182cm midfielders - sometimes a bit "vanilla" - Kicking good be better, as could his speed. Contested ball is pretty good around the ground.

Yo Yo test is more important and a bit more like a football scenario.

On comparable VO2 max scores:

A 21.5 yo-yo is equivalent to 13.5 beep test.

A 16.1 beep score for example is equivalent to 23.6 yo yo ish.

It's hard to compare it this year, I think just because hardly any of the kids had ever done one of the tests before. Most the boys went in blind or did a little walk through practice with their clubs S&C coach.

Are you taking it to tha bank due to whispers from the saints camp or from murphys?

We Saints fans have been told to take a few things to the bank of late for zero results, so forgive me for asking why you believe this is a certainty? Seems to go against the general consensus of what we really need, and last I had heard it was GC/Swans/Cats most likely destination in the mid-teens/early-20s. That was from a pretty reliable individual.

Agreed that at 7/8 he is a reach
